  1. Thanks to you all for your replies. Apologies if the notes were cryptic,I assumed that any readers would be familiar with the loco classes. On reflection the few 25's at Toton is surprising. Maybe the two other 44's were indeed involved in the engineering work, thankfully another visit to Toton the following year found them on shed. 5901 and 8521 were as you say in use by the Research Dept.,and an APT was also seen at Derby.

Something I missed while posting this, must have got home via Paddington that day, seen there were:

    152  D1033 D1073  1613 1729  4177  D7022 D7032.

Yep,going further afield from your home patch to go spotting was always something to savour, saving up pocket money being a limiting factor...

    Cheers,

    Neil

I know this post goes on a bit,but it gives some idea of how good the railway was back then!

One of the times I came home from school, did homework, wolfed down my tea then walked to Southall. I copped 812 on an up express, then later on 828 hurried through on the down main with 6V07,Kensington Olympia-Penzance milk empties.A working I saw a few times on evening visits was a Freightliner which appeared from the London direction, which stopped at signals opposite the depot. After waiting for expresses to pass, this train then crossed to the down main and continued westwards. I'm fairly certain 1110 was on this working, suggesting it originated from the Eastern Region, the 11xx series of Brush 4's would have been rare on the Western.

  7. Hi Nidge,

Interesting collection of shots there,I like to see pictures taken from the footbridge at Southall, where I spent a lot of time as a lad...Is that maybe a failed Warship being removed from a train?

Main line loco's were not uncommon visitors to the depot at Southall, although on one Saturday afternoon back in October 1971 I was really surprised when 831 Monarch arrived on shed, only Warship I saw on the depot.

    More pictures please!

  8. Can you recall if the signal works shunter No 20 was actually at the open day or just seen at the station?

    Tony

    Hi Tony,

Am more or less positive that No. 20 was on display at the depot,to back this up I remember seeing a picture either in a magazine or somewhere on this esteemed site of the loco on display.

I wonder if I did see 1508,or was it a slip of the pen...

  10. That is a lot of Peaks at St Pancras (& the stabling point) - did you pop in before and after going to Kings Cross i wonder?

    Tony

    Hi Tony,

The Peaks were seen at the station,I never visited the stabling point.Looking at my records for that era, that seems to be a usual amount of Peaks, yes several visits were made, alternating with spending more time at Kings Cross, which was a fabulous place to watch activity.

    Fabulous collection Phil!

Can I ask a couple of questions? Did Royal Oak in MFYE carry a blue data panel; do you have the nameplates for Victorious and if so are they the re-drawn ones?

  13. Hi Dave,

I was taking slides and prints back then, this one's a print.Unfortunately I don't have the means to post the picture atm,but am looking into it(i.e. will need some advice).Another option would be if I could get a copy of said print and forward it on to you.I will investigate and let you know.

    Neil

    Hi Dave,

Back in the mists of time you were enquiring about the livery on 37705.

I've now been able to get a copy of my print done.I have to say that I'm disappointed with the quality,it's not as sharp as my original, which obviously I want to keep.I should probably have got a copy using the negative, but that would be hard to find right now...

However, you're welcome to have a copy if you still need it,not sure how we would arrange this?

  17. Hello Messrs Phil and Nidge,

Firstly,HNY to you both.Very happy days, can't remember them much though...The above info comes from my records from 1971,the first year I actually kept them, and they are by far the most

interesting that I have. You are both right with your comments on OOC's 22's,the last one I saw in the London area was D6340 at Southall on an unrecorded date in May 71. I have details of

further sightings up until April 71,I'd be quite happy to post under this heading if anyone's interested.I particularly remember 6356 being in good nick, possibly one of the last to get an overhaul..?

Many records of Class 43's in that year too...When's that time machine being made available to the general public....

At Paddington, the friendly crew of Albion allowed me and my mate into the cab,as the loco awaited to depart l/e,presumably for Old Oak Common. Great days...

    Hi Dave,

I was taking slides and prints back then, this one's a print.Unfortunately I don't have the means to post the picture atm,but am looking into it(i.e. will need some advice).Another option would be if I could get a copy of said print and forward it on to you.I will investigate and let you know.

    Neil
