One could make a killing selling Tier One tee-shirts to the lucky proprietors.

More seriously, the overall lack of transparency at work here is an insult to the consumer.

Ooh, scope for a Popmaster spoof - One Tier Out!

They used to demonstrate a tiny piece of sodium whizzing around a dish of water when I was at school. Pinching one of the little 'bricks' of it out of the paraffin filled jar and throwing it into a disused mill pond does not have a similar result. It makes a rather impressive / terrifying explosion instead.

    So I'm told....

When my Mum was a lab tech at a school, they had seperate cleaning areas for "dry" and "wet" cleaning.

One day someone managed to leave some sodium on a piece of equipment and left it in the "wet" area.

My Mum didn't spot this, and rinsed it off in the sink, the piece of sodium went down the drain and then blew a hole in the water trap much to her surprise (and everyone else in earshot) :D

Calcium carbide was used on vehicle and even bicycle lights before the universal adoption of electric. You can still buy it for vintage motorcycles etc and it is very entertaining stuff. I could tell you how you can propel a 2 gallon metal bucket about thirty feet into the air with it, but I'm a responsible adult....:haha:

Sodium is a good one too - can't see this being permitted these days :D

Me too. Mine are in the post apparently. Thanks for thinking of me.

No worries. To be honest I'd forgotten I ordered them, so was a bit "Eh?" when the invoice came in. It's for a VERY long term project.

The BG is now finished bar the final buffers.

I’ve done the rain strips as Mike suggested (thanks Mike) and finished off the ends and painting. Some of these coaches seem to have teak coloured wheels and some black. Can anyone enlighten me as to when each is correct?

As for the buffers, I’ve spoken to Invertrain and their Haywood Railway clip top buffers are being produced but they’re not imminent, so I’ve stuck some round buffers on for now and will replace with the correct ones as and when they become available.

I just got an invoice for a set of these so might be worth trying again now - https://invertrain.com/product/lner-clip-top-buffers/

There have been no 80X movements beyond the three units that are working RDG-NWP today. Nothing is cleared to move beyond the three units I mentioned last night. The services that have run have been 2+4s. 1A80 0815 Penzance - 'Paddington' ran to Plymouth with GW15 (2+4).

All of the units that outstabled on Friday night at Oxford, Hereford, Exeter NY, Penzance, Gloucester* and two at Worcester are still stranded in those locations until a concession can be granted for one move to a depot. This might be at 5mph only(!)

There is no clear answer as to what a fix is going to be or how long it will take. Worst case estimates suggest this might be going on for a very long time.

Clearly it is still a very fluid situation, one moment GWR might have 47 units tomorrow and the next 8 and then the next it might just be the three that are chugging around at the moment.

387s can be seen doing training between Didcot and Swindon today and it is hoped that when a service can be run with these that it will be 12 car formations.

Yaw Damper cracks are clearly still a problem, on Friday (when Joe Public wouldn't have been any the wiser) there were about half a dozen units stopped for yaw damper reps. When I last reported that GWR had five units this was subsequently dropped to three because of yaw damper cracks. To rub salt in the wounds one of those three units has a diesel only restriction and it will need to make a brief fuel stop today before coming back into traffic.

Dark times and a very murky road ahead for all on the Western.

*800021 was in service when the decision was made to stop the fleet and terminated at Gloucester pending inspection - which it failed.

Wow, what a mess :( Really don't envy anyone involved in trying to get it sorted and something resembling a service going again.

Regarding galvanic corrosion, my first "introduction" to it was when I learned that Morris Minor travellers have an aluminium rear roof - hence the rubber strip separating it from the roof over the front seats (and the body it sits on is timber) - which means it makes a REALLY good radio aerial!

I wasn't even aware of these prototypes until I came across some pics on Flickr yesterday and although it's not obvious on these picture, Brian's model shows that they also had venetian blinds fitted like the MK2 Pullmans.

That's an exceptionally neat condemned marking.

To all thoese who have had the pre order cancelled. All I can say is. I had mine cancelled and I looked on the net and rang around. Found a shop that still had a few. If a shop on the net say out of stock that is not all ways the case. A quick phone call can result in yes, have one left. Some shops like to have a buffer zone so show out of stock.

There are still 5 and 7 car set out there just need a bit of time tracking them down. Loads of middle cars.
I would seam there will be a situation were shops have the TU,TF,TS TRBS,NDN but no 7 or 5 car set. Be intresting in seeing how they will sell them.
    John

That's fine but there's no guarantee that shop will get their allocation either going by the number of shops having had to cancel pre-orders.

For all the people who don’t think there is much of a problem. This is Paddington right now.

Only one hitachi set and that didn’t look like it was in service.

The depot at North Pole was stuffed full of them on the way past.

    Draw your own conclusions.

I’m not sure blaming civil servants is constructive either. A cracked part... much more likely to be the fault of the engineering team. Engineers don’t like to be wrong (or told what to do). It’s just lazy to blame ‘faceless’ civil servants.

Dang, the whole service really has fallen over.

Coal dust and resin casting from a master based on the Airfix kit. Years ago they used to be about £5-£7 on market stalls and souvenir shops and are probably still available.  Check, yes http://www.welshcrafts.com/www.welshcrafts.coms/info.php?p=9&cat=48840.  Currently £17.99.  "Vintage" undamaged examples available on line at various prices, one on etsy at £38, but a recent ebay sale at £5.

I'm pretty sure I actually have one of these - might even have a brass plaque instead of it just being part of the moulding. If it's worth more than a couple of ££ I'd be surprised.
