My big take home from the Dustman was the recycling done in Glasgow - taking out the paper/cardboard and metal products for recycling, but in London it was all to landfill in Essex.

Recycling is not new, but it seems it's only recently we've truly embraced it, had the Glasgow model been followed perhaps we would today still only need one big big rather than the four or more some of us have.

In the 80s we would return glass bottles to the shop for 5p or 10p deposit back, milk bottles collected and reused, cardboard and newspapers were taken to the local Scout group for recycling and earning them funds. We had tiny dustbins that were rarely full. Then everywhere went over to plastic disposable packaging and so on, and we all needed huge wheely bins to take it all. Recycling is not the answer, that takes energy. Reuse and reduce is. We need to go back to reusable packaging (Milk and more are quite good with this).

Totally agree that for recycling one big receptacle is better than loads of separate ones - the US does this a lot and their recycling rates are much better than ours. Yes, someone has to sort it at the end destination, but hey, that's a job for some people too.

  2. I did email an enquiry a few weeks back and got a reply saying they were assembling the kit I wanted that week - have chased a couple of times since with no response. I shall try calling (when I've been paid - I've spent the money I put aside for it :D)

Oh heck, I was only joking!

    Mike.

To bring the saga to a close, they were delivered about 2pm. Hallelujah! It was stuff for work and valued in the thousands so was rather nervous of them disappearing or getting damaged.

Bucoops has suggested a possible source for replacement cranks - the 'throw' of these would need to be exactly the same as the wheels to prevent binding. Luckily you have one to measure.........as well as the wheels of course!

Apologies if you consider this to be stating the bleedin' obvious :D!!

Good point - and I have a feeling they are different throw.

That's because it's on it's way back to Swindon!

    Mike.

Not far off - it went from Docklands to East Midlands!

It's now at Ipswich. Wonder where next... Hopefully me.

Not ebay madness but courier madness - I'm expecting three boxes via DHL today.

    The tracking shows:

    Swindon to Heathrow

Heathrow to Stansted (so about 25 miles from me)

Stansted to Docklands (Assume this means London Docklands (so about 30 miles from me)

They are now on the way from Docklands to Ipswich which will apparently be the delivery depot - presumably it will go along the A12 to do so, so will pass within 200 yards of me then have to turn round and come back. Can't see me getting them today, especially as the A12 is ruined at the moment!

    Shock horror no delivery today.

    Thanks!

    1) the fitting of the remote attachment onto the pips on the front of the box (temporarily) this helps with checking the squareness.

Ah - I did wonder what they were! and the 'remote attachment' pieces you refer to. I can see how that would be useful in the construction.

    2) Running the piece of 1mm wire across the frame.

Yes, spotted that and I will be adding that piece of wire just to strengthen the thing up

A question for you (and any others) - how do you fix the layshaft into position? Given that it's steel then a considerable amount of heat would have to be introduced to obtain a decent solder joint ... by which time no doubt the plastic gears would have melted! More Loctite? (other (super)glues are available ...)

I use a blob of aliphatic resin (a wood glue) on each side. It's thick enough it doesn't seep through and gum the workings up, and if you need to remove it, it just peels off.

Finally made progress on getting a B4388 update stick but only after contacting Lenz directly in German! They didn't respond to my English email, but the German email got an almost instant response.

They had just sent a few update sticks to A&H Models and one is on its way to me now. If you want one then give Chris a call on 01280 701410 as there's a £2.50 charge for postage.

I did ask him to let me know when he has some but I may have to delay it as the cambelt went on my car a couple of days ago which is not something I have budgeted for!
