You had me worried there! 🤣
The underframe drawings for the 59' 10 1/2" underframe as used under the E140s (lot 1407) shows four sets of truss rods. Being aware of the perils of relying on just drawings, though, we have managed to find a couple of photos of E140s where the sun is low enough that it picks out the outer and part of one of the inner sets of truss rods.I’m glad you can prove it! It means , though, that I have to modify most of my coaches now! My rule has been 64’ and upwards - 4 trusses, anything below - 2 trusses ( except restaurant, slips and pre-angleiron). Live and learn.

I notice that the photo of the underframe shows four sets of truss rods. For this size of GWR coach, should this not be two? I’ll get my coat.

Is the Peckett still available? If so, may I buy it? Thanks, Dai

Update on Numbers 1193 so very pleased!
That’s good. With the gods conspiring against shows right now, I must admit to being worried about numbers. Intended to go myself, but events conspired against me. Well done.

Interesting as I sometimes watch videos of shunting on layouts and get bored by how slow & tedious it looks - but I know I would be happy watching exactly the same in person at a Show.
Possibly it's down to being able to see the whole layout at a show, and seeing the purpose & context of the moves, whereas on video the view is often restricted or cropped to the train itself, and so it's less easy to 'follow the story', so to speak.
And you can talk to the operator, it becomes a two-way interaction in the flesh. I love shunting, less so roundy roundies.

That's a layout that oozed atmosphere, the grey skies and winter setting contributing strongly towards that. The way the backdrop managed to convey a sense of being up on a hill made it feel quite different to most too.
You may say grey skies and winter atmosphere, but you have to remember it is home to a lot of us😉 long live hiraeth.

Culm has been tested, and worked perfectly. Hooray! I hope the dismantling and transport doesn’t mess it up! Looking forward to the show tomorrow, and wondering hiw rusty everybody will be operating their layouts.

Went today, and well worth the visit. Very impressed with the Challenge Cup layouts. These are all small, recently built layouts using EMGS points and tracks. Wouldn’t like to choose the winner though.

Many thanks. I’ll put in an order for some bogies to try out.
I was put off by the postage cost, so no trial!

I bought some 10' Dean bogies and P4 wheels fit nicely with bearings. You might want to shift the brakes as they are far to close to the bogie frame
Many thanks. I’ll put in an order for some bogies to try out.

Dean bogies in various lengths are also available from Stafford Road on Shapeways, if you are flush with money

Any idea as to whether these bogies would be suitable for EM?

It would be really good for the manufacturers to make these locos easily EM-able without stretching the price. Reckon it would be tough to stretch this wish for P4 modellers, but EM should be managable.

This is the first time for weeks that I’ve been able to access this thread through’ stuff I posted in’, so I’m amazed hardly anybody else has posted in the meantime! Anybody else had my problems of access?
anyway, new bird for my garden: fieldfare, and in the river at the bottom: goosander (6) and kingfisher.

Took a while though - four-point tries didn't come in until about 1971.
Well it was amateur days, the IRFU, or whatever it was called then, must have had a lot of trouble getting their yachts together! In Wales, we wanted the 4 point try as soon as we started scoring them!

I don't really understand the arithmetic there, unless it dates from the days of 3 point tries? *
*1959, apparently; 4 tries, 1 conversion, 1 kick (I couldn't find if it was a drop goal or penalty, but with the brown ball it was probably a penalty
Yes, it was from the three-point days. It was such a travesty of a result from the play that they started to consider changes to the scoring system: this resulted in a four point try before we got to the five pointer.

I can remember brake tenders appearing at Abercynon and Radyr in 1963. They appeared because D6742 and D6743 couldn’t manage the braking power of the 56xx used on the Merthyr Vale to Abercynon coal trains.

I’ve painted sellotape cream, cut into strips and applied to windows. Looks good and has lasted years.

The team that score the most points legitimately deserve the victors spoils, that is what the sport is all about, it's not boxing where you get points accumulated during the game for doing well, it's like running, first past the winning line deserve the medal. The game ends when the ref blows the whistle, not at half time, Tigers never gave up, they fought their way over the try line, Saracens were deemed to have illegally collapsed the maul, so the result was inevitable, even Saracens know they if they break the laws of the game there are consequences.
Mmmmm. The NZ - Lions match springs to mind. 18-17 to NZ but Lions scored 5 tries to 6 pens. You can see why try scores have increased in value compared eith penalties!

What a superb injury time win for the Tigers, beating Saracens to stay top of the league, only three games gone but a nice start after the few seasons we have had losing badly, happy Tiger.
Not sure you deserved to win that match, Sarries looked very Sarries. But your crowd certainly helped push the Tigers over the line.
Type of coaching stock in these photos?

I don’t think they got extra leg room: I think the false wall was flat and the bowend outside it. Like you say, why bother? I may be wrong though!
