  1. Now I can see the pleasure in betting on a horse race or a sporting event, but bookies outside a maternity hospital, really?

Bet you they wouldn't give you evens on either

  2. Can't see any chimneys sticking out nor did I notice any irate sound recordists
  3. Not sure what a generator van looks like to be honest, but this coach looked different.
  4. Went along to Dunkeld and Birnam today to see the Round GB on it's way through the Highlands to Inverness, B1 and Jubilee double headed in front pulling a dozen coaches and a Brush class 47, now I know diesels are at the back to provide assistance if a failure happens, but did they expect both loco's might break at the same time?
  5. I don't believe it, Union of South Africa broken again, oh well we get a B1 and a Jube instead, heading for the hill tomorrow

Could be worse, could have been a class 66, as was case a couple of years ago....

Another Jubilee on the Forth Circle tomorrow as well, no steam for a year, then 3 come along together.

  6. 9f's were being driven on express passenger services on the Great Central at speeds in excess of 70 miles an hour and some of the other locos were known to go faster, so I'm sure there were others. I hope that the Tornado failure is/was something relatively straight foreword so it can continue it's higher speeds runs.
  7. It depends on the engine and the work it does, modern petrol engines are less reliant on oil changes, but it depends on how hot the oil gets and for how long, a thrash down the motorway does more damage to the oil than pottering round the town. I changed the oil in my old V8 Aston every 3000 miles as I knew the bloke that drove it had a very heavy right foot.
  8. I recently bought a loco from Rails ebay dept, after very few runs it stopped, I rang and explained what happened, they sent me an email with a return label. After a few days I thought I'd ring to see what was the problem with the loco, "can't see a record for the repair shop" someone said, "ah it's because it's back in the post to you, should arrive tomorrow", it did. Seems the chip had packed in and was replaced FOC, excellent service from Rails, so I've placed another order with them.
  9. Not something I've seen before, an albino cock pheasant
  10. Smells like teen spirit- Nirvana
  11. I come from a family of engineers, going back to T. W. Worsdell(my Great, Great Grandfather), my son is a Royal Engineer, but I doubt any of my Grandchildren will follow into engineering as the rewards seem few and far between. I am saddened that we rely so heavily on imports and that what few profitable engineering companies left seem to be wholly owned by multi nationals. I recently retired from the Oil industry and the waste I witnessed was astonishing, management was very poor in actually doing that, managing, by contrast the Japanese car factory I worked in as a maintenance engineer was governed in a much more cost effective way, though the British managers were poor and lacking in proper man management training.
  12. Followed by something electrically powered?
  13. One of the ex Gresley coaches, very good detail for RTR. The expresses in the mid 1950's would seem to be made up of these rather fine coaches, looking for a couple more.
  14. Just dropped the canopy on to try it for size, the intention is to drill holes in the platform so the legs will be held, but not fixed with adhesive so it can be lifted off for maintenance work, it's a compromise, but on a RTR layout I think it works. I hunted high and low for the lattice girders, found at the Glasgow show, Plastruct 9C-552 if anyone is in need of any, not cheap but effective, all will be suitably weathered in due course.
  15. The GC is still moving along, signal boxes built, fences laid and starting on scenic back ground for the rural side of the track(still in progress). Canopies under construction for the Leicester station, this is a trial using Wills kits as the basis and modified as required. Coal loads added to the 16 ton wagons and also re-instated in the tender of the 8f, still require a serious number of these 16ton grey minerals.
  16. Well done lads it had plates on the chassis saying built in Derby and another talking about a battery conversion(whatever one of those is lol), I couldn't see where the coal and water went in it either
  17. Crackin' pic at High Dyke, used to go camping behind where the the photographer is, about 10 years or so before this one, great memories.
  18. Quite a little collection of oil burners on show, but not running.
  19. Was out in Aberdeenshire today, and whilst watching a wee steam engine I bumped into this, no idea what it is but looks old.
  20. I'm new to this making of buildings, I had a go at scratch building some station buildings for my Leicester Great Central station, not very good really, so I decided I need more practice. Having built one signal box from a Metcalfe kit, which was a bit messy, I had another go last night using pva glue instead of squeezing adhesive out of a tube, have to say this was a whole lot more satisfying, so I'm now thinking of trying to scratch build the station units again, any hints or tips gratefully received. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/124304-the-great-central-in-and-around-leicester-195565/
  21. Not much modeling but lots of running of locos, I am waiting to get out and collect more materials, one thing occurred to me whilst watching the locos running that my tender driven engines seem to have more torque than the engine driven ones. Both the Hornby 9f and A3 are tender driven and seem to haul longer trains with ease and the B1 is an absolute work horse. I certainly don't mind the tender driven locos and apart from when removing or placing them on the track, which can be trickier, I like them just as much as loco driven. I received some rather nice ex Gresley coaches in the post too, in blood and custard and they really are very nicely made with extra detailing, I'll take some pictures later.
  22. Liking the car park Andy, though I might have chased the mod away with his Lambretta.
