You are forgetting the "merit tables" where you didn't get awarded points for winning as that was seen as professional, so you had a percentage, then there was the John Player Cup which added a lot more to the interest at the top of the game. There were also the "County" games, which were seen as a stepping stone to an international call up and finally there were the regional games who came together as a scratch side to play touring Southern Hemisphere sides. At the other end of the game where I played, we had fixtures against second teams of the likes of Leicester, Northampton and Moseley as well as those arranged by our fixture secretary. I was told by ours that if we offered a decent meal after the game we got better fixtures, the fact we often won our County Cup and provided players for the county team, it didn't matter so much as to what beer or food we had on offer.

I went to Eton...............................................................................just for the day, my mates band were playing there, we had to arrive in the morning for an evening gig, we had a tour, then we were fed before the gig, the building was nice, the kids were ok, the staff were rather pompous and the food was rather average, better than the greasy spoon we went in later, but my mums was better.

Don't get TOO excited... Italy are probably now on the right track, being basically a S Hemisphere Barbarians now. Lynagh was born in Italy, why the hatred against the Italians, the game is expanding to survive, they get 70000 crowds for home games, so less SH players than the current Scotland side and draw in bigger crowds as the Scots don't always sell out Murrayfield these days.
