  1. Can't remember seeing a kit for the 10" in any scale other than a vague memory of something intended to look like one which fits a Hornby pug chassis In other news; This nasty thing(because let's be honest it's not accurate) has been coming together from the drawings in railway modeller. Only parts not cut, filed or bent into shape by me are the hand rail knobs. Check valves, injectors and sandbox filler caps have been made by attacking 14BA cheese head screws while they spin in the Dremel. Chimney, safety valve cover and cross heads will be lost wax cast with the equipment in my shed. Just need the will to finish it.
  2. http://www.framptononsevern.com/html/frampton_railways.html Plenty of info here
  3. https://museum.wales/collections/online/object/2b83520d-61c8-32ab-9d4f-a231ea63ab16/Taff-Vale-Railway-locomotive-photograph/?field0=string&value0=Taff Vale locomotive&field1=with_images&value1=on&index=2 This Taff Vale loco has it, there is also a dubious water colour painting of a Taff Vale 0-6-0 loco allegedly named "venus" which is in the NRM collection which shows the same features in its springs. Unfortunately not been able to pin down the builder of either of these. Interestingly the Taff Vale 0-6-0 also has a similar gusset between the smoke box and frames...
  4. https://www.gracesguide.co.uk/File:Im1867EnV23-p316.jpg Identical design of string hangers, also the rod taking the load from axle box to spring is again on the outside of the frames. No expert by a long shot but it's more convincing to me than any other suggestions thus far.
  5. R and W Hawthorn of Leith built several 0-4-0 tender engines for lines in Fife and the surrounding area that were later absorbed into the NBR. Other examples of locos built by them have the same features in regards to the how the boiler is attached to the frames and unusually fancy spring hangers are not uncommon in their products. The number of small 0-4-0 tender locos put out by this manufacturer that were in service in Fife and taken over by the NBR says to me that there is every chance it could be a modification of one their products if the NBR connection is true. If I were the owner of an industrial operation in Fife at the time and had a choice between carting a loco all the way from Leeds or elsewhere vs buying a second hand one from the NBR and making it what I needed I'd opt for the latter. Drawing here seems to show a fair bit of similarity, again the boiler brackets, the frames. Even the shape of the of what I guess are horn guides is similar(W irons on a wagon but unsure of the nomenclature for an outside framed loco). Should also note that the lochgelly iron and coal ltd didn't come into existence until 1871 and thus are probably not the people who purchased it from the NBR. The fact it's labelled as number 3 might denote that it is the eldest loco on site.
  6. Could you work out cost of shipping to Melbourne? I'd willingly take it all off your hands if it's not that much. Could be more reasonable than postage to Europe given Australia is a bit closer.
  7. Finally realised where I've seen something vaguely similar, if you kindly ask google for a look at the fox, Walker and co 0-6-0st "karlskoga" preserved in Sweden you'll see it's not a million miles away. It is still a niggling annoyance that this loco hasn't been definitively identified.
  8. No problem with buying old ivory objects and recycling them is there? Would actually stop the death of the animal being completely needless in the long run if you went down to an antiques place and asked them to point the owners of any less than mint condition/low value ivory objects in your direction. (Just my personal opinion on the ethics of using the stuff I expect some will not share this point of view)
  9. As sir Douglas said the hole in the second boss is indeed an unusual feature. The other thing that sticks out like a sore thumb is the odd design of the cab steps. Looks almost like they are a one piece cast step and extra gusset between the buffer beam and cab floor or they've been incorporated into the foot plate valance. Could swear I've seen this feature somewhere else before but can't for the life of me remember where
  10. Would that 009 creation be the hunslet 0-4-2 from the private railway some chap owns up in Junee in New South Wales? https://www.peteshobbyrailway.club/ Can find it here
  11. Todays work, filler all smoothed out and some etch primer sprayed on just to make it look nicer, 3D printed furniture for the top of the tank has been designed and will be ordered in due course. Wheels and bushes are on the way from the UK but who knows how long that will take with the state of the royal mail and Australia post. Got about half way through roughing out the smoke box saddle front and back before I broke the saw blade and realised I've run out. I need to find a cheap bulk source for these as they cost far too much from the model shop for so few of them. this is about as far as I want to go with the body before the wheels motor and gears come so that I can work out what I need to slice and dice to fit them in.
  12. IMG_0531 the tank is starting to take shape now, the brass for the front was a bit of scrap with some dents in it so it got a layer of filler on the front to make it smooth again. while ripping down an old shed on my farm I found a massive length of copper pipe that is exactly the right size for the boiler, not sure I need 20 of these but I'll put it to one side in case I want a few more. IMG_0511 Had a nice day on Saturday chasing this from Emerald to Gembrook on the puffing billy railway, quite a sight as I've never seen anything like it in real life before.
  13. The gauge one is big but not big enough, I'm currently concocting a 1 foot gauge live steam version that will have a five plank wagon with a seat in it to act as a seat for the driver. Quotes have been received for the laser cut steel for the frames and spacers/buffer beams/saddle tank/cab and running plates, a qualified welder has been found for the broiler and I'm currently looking into the best means of making the cylinders. Something of a dream come true to get this project off the ground so I'll be very happy when the first metal is cut.
  14. That could be useful in some ways, they tend to give a much better view of the frame profile behind the wheels which is often missing in the drawings from railway modeller where a wheel center or steps are drawn over the top and leaving you to infer the frame profile where it meets the hornblocks and where suspension break equipment is positioned. Sadly it's not a project where I can send the old man and his camera to photograph parts not shown that are hidden behind others.
  15. Thank you kindly, Now to negotiate the purchase with my accountant(wife), banned from the model shop without permission.
  16. That would be fantastic, or if you could supply the year and month my local model shop has a large stash of old railway modellers for sale in their second hand section.
  17. Could anyone point me in the direction of a decent drawing for these locos? I want to build a model of one for my old man but I can't find anything.
  18. Here we go I guess, fed up with the small stature of my 4mm scale stuff I decided to go shopping for some brass and using some drawings from an old copy of railway modeller this has materialised in a few hours of work. I rather like how it dwarfs my Hornby sentinel. Tomorrows work will be the dumb buffers laminated from thick brass sheet. I plan to get the frames roughed out this week and drill them on Friday when me and my model engineering pals meet up and work on the 1' gauge railway next door. sorry for the rather poor camera phone images the mother in law borrowed my camera for a holiday. (really must finish that chicken enclosure with the white door in the background) Edit:this is my first go at scratch building in any scale so please feel free to give advice on improving it
  19. Has anyone got his up to date contact details? I wouldn't mind getting a rivet tool myself and a wheel press as no one in Australia makes such things as far as I know
