  8. If you used a curved point a little to the right of where you show the new straght point you would:- 1) have a couple of inches extra in the siding to hide that loco you mentioned 2) avoid the track in the siding going right then back left in a very short disance HTH Jim

  15. 'Chard, thanks for finding all these photos for us, they're marvellous. Re the "Thirsty Clayton taking water at Carstairs", is it not more likely that the driver is trying to put out the fire? Jim

    Hornby Clan

Thanks for that Dave, I very Nelly missed what you said earlier. Back on topic, I have had a Clan for a few years but it started life as a tender drive Hornby Brit with a Jackson Evans(?) conversion carried out By another friend, Tommy Johnstone. Like all of Tommy's work the conversion is superb and it will be interesting to compare the 2 locos. Oh Dave, if an elephant has a skin complaint, is it suffering from pachydermatitis? Jim

    Hornby Clan

Clan MacLeod is now in the grubby mitts of my mate Keith, courtesy of D&F. He's bringing it round tonight for testing so will post a report in the morning. Jim
  18. Is waiting until Sunday to go to the Falkirk show. Hope the weather improves.

  19. Looking good but just a bit concerned that the brewery might be too big for the layout and get in the way when viewing or operating. Don't worry about the Dalek on the rooftop. It's that three-legged b*gg*r from War of the Worlds lurking in the background you should be bothered about! Jim

    Hornby Clan

I'm afraid I can't shed any more light on the the source of the statement as there is no accompanying comment crediting the origin of the table. Peter Smith makes no reference to the Clans in the main text so he has not added the Clan figures in support of an article or anecdote in the book. As to the extra 20 tons on the loading, I can only assume that the authorities expected the Clans to make better use of their power than the Bullieds, perhaps by being more sure footed. We will probably never know for certain now unless someone out there can come up with an answer..... Jim

    Hornby Clan

The Clans would have been allowed an extra 20 tons more than the 5s and Bullieds between Bath and Masbury, 290 tons against 270. This is less than the weight of 1 coach so would not have been a great improvement over the existing loco stock, especially as the Clans themselves did not enjoy the best of reputations for free steaming. We can only wonder. Jim

    Hornby Clan

The rumour that Clans were to come to the S&D sadly never became fact BUT in Peter Smith's excellent book "Footplate Over The Mendips", the final pages give loading tables for various engines working over the S&D. In the section headed "Ex LM & BR Standard Passenger & Mixed Traffic Engines" the final entry is for..........Clan Pacifics. So, although it is only a rumour, there is absolutely no reason why you can't keep repeating it until one day it becomes accepted fact and I can then justify 72006 Clan MacKenzie in charge of The Pines Express.
