  1. I was using Stumble Upon tonight and it threw up this site with some beautiful pictures. Not railways, but a really good example of scenic modelling nonetheless. Enjoy. http://www.viralnova.com/takes-pictures-of-model-town/?_nospa=true
  2. Love the plans. Go for it!
  3. Google is your friend: http://www.petersspares.com
  4. To be fair, it's out of Humbrol's hands as to what you choose to paint over - a good undercoat will always give you a better top coat. Try a spray-on black undercoat and work from that, I'm sure it'll help.
  5. Thanks Adams442T - This is as far as I'm going with the lining on this one. Those little waist panels are tricky. Still need to pick out the door handles etc with brass though.
  6. No, its '?' Just a brush and lots of bad language!
  7. My latest attempt at a Ratio 4-Wheeler. I'm not sure I can persevere with the lining.
  8. WHSmiths Broughton Park has both Mallard and Corronation GBL

  9. You're right - they should be useful, but I'm not sure I can justify a subscription to find out. The coronation, for example, isn't really of any interest to me, but as you say, the 28xx, CoT, and 45xx might be useful for bits (particularly the boiler and tender of the 28xx). CoT is perhaps less inviting because of the lack of a commercial chassis to go with it.
  10. I used mine as a test bed for a future A4 repaint as my brother is of a north-easterly persuasion
  11. I chipped this one with their own-brand decoder, no sound, and it ran happily up and down on 'Radleigh'. Seems very smooth and quiet. What I can't get over is the price. No connection, satisfied customer etc, but blimey this was cheap!
  12. It was payday weekend, and I fancied a run out in the car... and, well, I hadn't been to that shop in Liverpool for what? 40 years? Anyway, came home with this utter delight.
  13. Payday, so sort of bought an engine...

Nothing as boring as that - it's a hypercube

  15. Would a (motorised?) Hornby Flying Scotsman chassis be suitable for one of these?
  16. Here are the results of this afternoon's experimentation with the airbrush. The picture is perhaps a little harsh as to my eye it looks 'browner' in the flesh. Still all up in the air, still all very much experimental, but I'm reasonably happy so far. Lots of bits where the masking got in the way and protected the ballast rather than the rail, but hey-ho I'll have to do something about that.
  17. Just bought a Hornby rolling road and one of the roller screws has sheared off. Not happy at all.

I tend to thin the varnish with water alone, and give several coats if required. My experience with retarder has always been problematical - my advice would be that 25% sounds like way too much. I use literally one or two drops at a time, but maybe different brands have different retardant effects.

Hi Job, I like the definition in the skirt now. Light and shade is just what you want. I have found that Vellejo acrylic matt varnish is very good - as is all of their paints - and it doesn't disturb the paint underneath. This is a 25mm wargaming figure of mine and illustrates the highlight/shadow effect that I would be aiming at, though it is very difficult to do on small figures. The flesh on the figure has been finished with the Vallejo varnish.

    Buffalo

Hi Nick, tbh At the time I built her I was unaware that tank engines carried red frames, so she ended up in black though red would be lovely. Plus, try as I might, I never seem to get a pleasing result with Precision Indian Red. There is no lining on the cab sides, no. Should they be?

    Buffalo

Finally recovered from 10+ years of storage, this is a GWR Buffalo, built from the Alan Gibson kit. It has Romford wheels and a Mashima motor, but has never been run 'in anger'. Back in 2002 when I built her I had nowhere to run locos so I'm sure she'll need lots of fettling to run smoothly. I'll also need to convert her to DCC. She seems to have sustained some damage too, chipped paint, bent coal rails etc, but not too bad. (Crocodile / No. 36 will need lots of TLC before that see's the light of day)

    Radleigh

Hi Mikkel, That siding will be used for a small loco shed, with primitive water/coal facilities. I have a Buffalo that will hopefully look pretty sitting here.

    Radleigh

Welcome to Radleigh! This is my first go at a 'proper' layout since I was a lad, and I need to keep things realistic. I have little to no space for a permanent layout, so I didn't want to go bonkers - this is 1 foot wide by 5 and a half feet long. There will be a cassette fiddle yard at some point. Track is Hornby, though I have used only Y-points and Express points to keep things looking smooth. Everything seems happy enough with the points btw - these are the newer kind with finer crossing V's and better check rails - as long as the back-to-back measurement of the wheels is correct even my hamfisted attempt at a ratio 4 wheeled coach will run happily through them. Derailments will not be tolerated It is set up for DCC running and points will be motorised too - not because they need to be on such a small layout but because I want to make it work and learn from the experience. Rule Number One is very important for me. If I'm not having fun, I'm not interested - so I'll always run what I want. Having said that, If I had to locate Radleigh in space and time it would be South Devon, 1907, so that's what I'm aiming for. So there we are - that's the plan in a nutshell. btw that photo was taken about a month ago - so now I have almost finished getting the ballast down. Happy days!
  24. OK, so I knuckled down and ballasted! Only the final 8 inches or so at the station throat to do. :)
