Not sure if it counts as “cheapo train sets”, but here’s an idea I’ve had for a while:

I’ve been seeing a lot of those YouTube videos with people making fancy things out of those 3D pens, one good example I found whilst checking YouTube was a car body made using a 3D pen, designed to fit an existing RC chassis, and this got me thinking… Could this be applied to railway modelling? I know decent places to get cheap chassis’, I have a book of OO drawings by F.J. Roche, all I’d need is the pen. Would it be to the same scratch as a professionally made model? Absolutely not, but as a bit of fun I think it could be a decent challenge!

If I were to attempt it, I’d likely try something like a Jinty, not many complex shapes since most of the boiler is covered by the large tanks, hell, maybe even whip together some scale drawings of a Nellie body and attempt a replica of that, either way, I’ve been thinking of this for a while and want to hear other peoples thoughts on the matter.

I honestly can't see any reason why it wouldn't be feasible, even if not exactly an ideal method.

It looks even more like a Romney from that angle Chris maybe the white needs to be grey'd down a little coz it looks very VERY white. The Romney is a long wool breed so as I said it looks a good match.

Seconded. That or a Corriedale, but they tend to be a bit "fluffier".

Something cute to finish off with. Another product of the infamous gostude, this little 0-4-2ST can't seem to decide in its description if it's in TT or 009 gauge. It's clearly a Pugbash and I do actually quite like the livery, though I don't know why it seems to have a corncob instead of a safety valve. I can definitely see one of you guys doing something with this little thing. Gostude actually has a few interesting Pugbashes on his eBay page at the moment. I'd have put more up if I wasn't running out of image upload space.

Actually yeah, let's follow this up with some of the weird and wonderful items gostude has at the time of writing:

Back to kitbashed and customised engines found in the wild- how about this? A sort of single Fairlie.

That is indeed a Single Fairlie by the looks. It also seems to be made of Meccano.

Also been genuinely tempted to do a Where Are They Now for all the models that have been featured on this thread and are now in the possession of people on here. Could be quite fun.

Anyway, after a long period of absence, I think it's time for some of what I found on the web. Pictures are linked as per usual for me.

This O-gauge shunter is an interesting beast, and not just because of the somewhat amusing number. Looks like a cross between a rooftop air conditioning pump and one of those self-propelled snowploughs.

An entire T-gauge oval layout in a suitcase. That's new for this thread. Very nicely done as well. I scrolled past it at first then had to basically do a double-take as I really wasn't expecting to see this. I don't do T-gauge and it's a bit alpine for my taste anyway but still nicely done.

You guys are aware that not all sheep are created equal right? There are small breeds and larger breeds and tups are bigger than ewes. Some of them are built like bulldozers and will plough you under as soon as look at you and that's just the ewes.

Grew up on a farm, can confirm. Even amongst the same breed size can vary quite significantly.

Hi All, I won the auction on the NER BTP/G6 posted a few days ago, sorry if anyone else was bidding! Its an incredibly charming model dare I say it was made when the last of the real things were being withdrawn, but decidedly not a kit bash, rather its entirely scratch built aside from the wheels, the model is made from steel sheet which explains the build-up of rust. It's also unpowered, I'm thinking a peco wonderful wagon and a triang motor bogie may make a suitable method of propulsion.

While the paint is very characterful I think I may give this charming thing a clean up, the rust needs removing and a repaint is in order, I would like to improve the details too, a new dome would match better and a smokebox dart, and I think proper handrails would also lift the model, the handrails are made from wire inserted into the model and another length fitted for the handrail itself with blobby solder for the knob. I'll give it a good clean and degrease first then see how I feel before committing possible sacrilege.

It saddens me to see one of these in such a state. My own KLR's No.14 is one of these beauties (the two-rail version) and it is probably my favourite diesel in my collection. I'd not even call that that bad if it wasn't for the thickness of the paint and the oversized and badly added number.

    It's a Percy!
*ahem* What I mean is it appears to be a slightly modified Larko Dockside shunter kit to me, judging from that distinctive high-set oval tank. Pretty rare these days. I mentioned Percy as the original model of him by the Rev is bashed from the same kit.

The model itself isn’t actually the original Thomas variant, the face is a spare I had lying around, the model began as one of the many repaints that Hornby sells for way more than they’re actually worth. Chimney was swapped for one from a busted Keyser 1400, bunker extended with milliput, water caps and other details were taken from the terrier model, I also added a condensing pipe to the left side made out of a thick wire I had lying around. I also attempted to add a front coupler hook from the Keyser model, kept breaking off though so I just used the one from the terrier on the final model. Lamp irons were simply cut-down track pins.IMG_0096.jpeg.6b342cb003b00c5f8c52cf6e9e1ee794.jpegIMG_0075.jpeg.60b52557c3b37906ee62d1247ca40eb5.jpeg

This thread is generally intended for kitbashes and customised engines found in the wild (aka. not made by the poster.)
My pedantry aside, that is a very smart little 0-6-0T. Chimney is a bit tall for my liking personally, but that's just me. I'd also drop down the filler caps so the bottom of the lid is flush with the tank top, it'll help it look more realistic, Good work regardless, keep it up.

I still remember the time I showed the staff in a Games Workshop store a couple of my very nicely painted Ral Partha figures and judging by the expressions on their faces it was almost as if I was inviting them to enter into the gates of hell.   They didn't quite go as far as throwing me out, but did emphasise that I couldn't use them in any game played within the store's hallowed walls.

I had little liking for their expensive plastic figures and mostly collected the vintage Citadel metal figures from the days before they started calling themselves 'Games Workshop'.  Most of those older figures were lovely characterful pieces and to my mind much considerably better than the plastic figures.

I do agree with you there. This is why I don't play in actual Games Workshop stores and instead play as part of a small casual wargaming club.
Also pretty sure I've showcased some of my heavily kitbashed Space Marines on here before at some point.

Oh yes, well tuned pipes can sound absolutely fantastic when played by someone who actually knows what they're doing.

    Hello.

I don't want you chaps to be cross, or, worse, disappointed, but I have had a few months of being unwell. Walking Hadrian's Wall was probably not an adequate alternative to steriods and various other pills and inhalers that are getting me back to normal. This means that for sometime I have had shorter days with less physical and mental energy. I have struggled to keep up with work and family committments.

Now, though, as I return to normal, I have found inspiration and am easing my way back into model making but not, as yet, returing to railways. I looked at my neglected wargames stash and decided that what I needed most in my life was a Mediaeval town ....

Nice to see you doing better, James. I myself have been suffering from a severe lack of railway modelling motivation of late (hence my own prolonged absence from these forums) so I can empathise.
I can also relate to having a large pile of unfinished wargaming projects. I still have a huge box of unmade 40k Space Marines. The issue there always is finding something to make that I'd actually use in game.

With some hesitation, my debut contribution to RMWeb... This may just about come within the rules (rules?) of Pug-bashing, but I think in the spirit.  The running plate at least is from a Hornby Caley Pug; the rest of the body from a Bachmann Junior saddle tank, and the chassis from an old Bachmann split chassis J72.  And then lots of razor saw. In the 'before' picture, showing recording everything I thought might be used, the in-practice unused 'Percy' has been redacted. All picked up cheaply at shows.  With luck the prototype #LSWR330 is identifiable.

Cyclops has been given a Hornby 101 chassis with the rear, front including cylinders, and connecting rod/piston rod cut off.  I bought this hoping to use it under a Playcraft/Jouef NB shunter, but the motor is too wide to fit inside the bonnet, so it's gone under Cyclops instead.  Current production, not a bad runner, but the wheelbase is really a bit long for this sort of thing.  The cut-off end of the conrod can be seen; it will one day be extended to be a jackshaft drive.

Top and second picture shows the loco running light from the NCB shed to the yard; the thing at the front is not a gesture but a temporary coupling.  I've got rid of the Dokafority Deltic cab windows, and given her new buffers and an off-centre exhaust stack.  She's intended to be a representative Bagnall 180hp DM, transferred to Dimbath Deep Navigation No.1 in anticipation of working a proposed night shift.  I've also put dummy frame extensions in at the front to make the thing look a bit less naked in that area.

Third photo shows her propelling a raft of empties into no.3 road under the loader in the rain.  She's got what is to my eyes a suitable 1950s look about her with that rounded bonnet nose, and the steam-engine looking  reshaped cab windows and new chassis 'feel' more cromulent than the TC bogie frame chassis.  The NB DH will eventually have a rebuilt Nellie chassis with it's original motor.  I'm looking at Kitmaster Drewry kits to supply the jackshafts, and, relevant to the previous post, might consider trying Cyclops' or another Hornby 0-4-0 chassis under a shortened version of that loco.

Looks great, John. Nice to see the continued evolution of this little loco.

Hi there Redgem, indeed she is, I'm the one who picked it up! To be honest she's in bits at the moment waiting for a full restoration as its a lot more fragile than it appears. I'll try and post a few photos later if I can pull her from storage but I'll give a run down of the construction. The model as many can probably see has been made from a late Margate era Hornby Railways A3 as far as I can tell date wise, it's tender drive not loco drive reusing the period Ringfield drive, there had been an attempt to wire the motor directly to the pickups in the loco as the tender coupling is useless for conductivity as I'll elaborate but this wire was too stiff and wouldn't allow for much articulation wise. The reason for the typical conductive pickup being a bit obsolete for that task is because the original builder has binned the original chassis block. As can be seen the driving wheels have been replaced with Romfords and these are fitted into section of brass square as the main chassis with the rest of the locomotive being built around that, the drilling of the axles for this chassis weren't very accurate and the wheels are a bit sloppy so I'm going to fabricate a new chassis for it. In combination with this are the rods, the main coupling rods were made from soldering together rail and the original rods and the tolerances also hamper it in that regard too.

I do agree with the joins are great, the body has been made by cutting and shutting together two A3 boilers using the smokebox of the second and a banjo dome which makes me assume the builder was working off Gresely's 1938 proposal for a 4-8-2 given the proportions. The boiler was closed off at the bottom without a chassis block inside it using paper cut from a Peco trackplan book! and then painted over and properly lined, before being stuffed with a brick of lead and plasticine (very 80s) turns out the plasticine was what was really holding it all together. The builder used nameplates from No.2580 Shotover spliced into Overshot are these maybe from KingsCross models? Overall its a fab model even in bits and is really deserving of a rebuild and I should get around to it one day. I'm reasonably convinced it was someone's first serious kitbash and despite its shortcomings the imagination shown was fantastic, I seriously hope the modeler is still with us and producing models as creative as this one.

Interesting. Thanks for this, it's rare that someone gets back to us with continuation to the story of one of the locos we show on here, let alone it being someone I already know on here. Look forwards to seeing it possibly running again, and I agree, I hope the modeller is still with us as this is fantastic and this hobby can always use more creatively-minded modellers.
