  1. It's been a good day!!!! The very patient Zeppelin now has side tanks, cab sides, cab ends, & bunker ends all sweated together and just waiting for a finish off with the piercing saw and twiddly files,,, what fun we have had,,, and not elastoplasts required so far!!! as mentioned it has been a good day. SAD As also mentioned recently please don't expect daily updates,,, but after some time away I really am enjoying myself!!!!
  2. Well,,, here we go again,,, I won't bore you with the details but we have had to move yet again,,, but now we are "hopefully settled",,, so much so that I have got the layout back and have been "playing" with it considerably of late. Current activity is shown on the build line,, N5, Q7, J3 and the long awaited Zeppelin,,, which after todays efforts of fitting pickups can now propel itself down a bit of track!!!! Oh Joy of Joys,,, a bit of progress Hope to post more activity but the patient followers are probably thinking "we have heard that before",, your right but lets see what happens. Final shot for tonight of the latest version of a workbench,,,,, so far so good!!!!
  3. Of course, I don't have a loco depot, but I can see the potential problem there. Some figures have to be mutilated to fit (lower limbs removed or arms broken, that sort of thing), but their presence, especially in photographs, is essential. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello Tony et al,,, Would like to say DISAGREE,,,, but will just say Compromise. Having modelled a loco depot/MPD in my opinion nothing looks worse than a shed full of loco's fully crewed. Never happened. When I was creeping round the back end of Doncaster Plant in the early 60's the last thing you wanted to come across was an engine crew!!! Where do you draw the line on this one?????? It's a hobby,,, get a life,,, blah blah blah,,,if I was exhibiting Stoke Summit or similar for sure every loco would have a crew,,,, but I didn't. SAD
  4. Possibly "GOOD" news Samantha,,,,, I certainly hope so. This is your business,,, your decisions are all that counts. I hope you now feel there is a future for the kits,,, which could generate revenue's to improve the old range and extend into the future. Good luck,,,, but don't forget your family!!! SAD
  5. For all the Workbench Freaks I copy a topic which started a couple of years ago,,, and created some fun & interest,,,, I am still fascinated by looking at other peoples workbenches,,,, but Rev Denny's has to be my favourite. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/102672-workbenches/ sad
  6. Tony the D9 looks wonderful,,, but,,, it is a "Robinson"!!!!!. As for the rest of the "open communication" over the past "micro-millenium" can I suggest you all contact: https://www.ofcom.org.uk I enjoy being a dinosaur,,, and it drives the kids wild!!! SAD
  7. Have you got a license for "industrial" modelling??? SAD
  8. Stanley Knife,,, right now,,,, quick,,,,please,,, PLEASE. SAD
  9. Over the years about half my complete tool kit!!!! SAD
  10. Definitely "NOT Essential Reading" in my experience. SAD
  11. Hi Jamie, Good to hear from you and how could we forget the Pickering show!!! Wonderful. The first train set I ever had was clockwork,,, [true] so as far as I'm concerned DC is NEW technology,, bet that makes you smile. Nothing lasts for ever and I am already getting excited thinking about what I can do next. Without a doubt the future rests with the "young un's" so it's a definite case of,,,, over to you. You keep supporting anything LNER based and you won't go far wrong. I will keep posting what I'm up to so you can keep in touch. Merry XMAS to ALL the lads at SDMRC and happy modelling. SAD & Salmon Pastures [retired]
  12. Point of order please "westerner",,,, in this neck of the woods we just don't mention Thomson,,,, Why??? he actually got paid for being a designer but the reality shows he was a co-op butcher. Nah,,, not my favorite person. SAD
  13. Actually managed to get some "modelling" done today,,,, seems like ages since I was actually constructive. Was fiddling around with my Robinson Zeppelin tank,,, or LNER L1 2-6-4t. The chassis was happily whirling away on the rolling road while I attached buffers, buffer beam and finished the structural part of the footplate. Oh happy days,,, the return of the tingle fingers!! SAD
  14. Many thanks Edward for those kind words I copy the "team photo" from Manchester,,, L to R The Rev Nev,, our very own tram trainer, myself, Alan who also features heavily on RMweb as "westerner" and Roger. I couldn't possibly comment on the virtues of anything,,, well not without starting a turf wars in the process. I have a particular interest in Robinson loco's,,, usually Edwardian "grace & elegance" although the one I am building at the moment is the 2-6-4 tank engine known as Crabs or Zeppelins,,, they really were ugly ducklings for Gorton,,,, I also have "a thing" about heavy freight engines and I find the Hughes Heavy 7F has a a definite charm,,,, 8 wheels, a wacking great boiler an Anderson shelter for the crew just in case it rains and thats all you have to spend your working life going over the pennines,, where everyone knows it never rains,,, well not on the Eastern side. The Highflyers were certainly "different" and typically LYR,,, on the Sunday I spent a most pleasant hour chatting to 4 lads from the LYR society and not surprisingly they found anything from Gorton definitely league 2,,, that is a conversation I will never forget,,, it was wonderful concentrated railway humour. As someone once said about the big Hughes freight engines,, "I like my engines the same as my women,,, big, top heavy and ugly" so there is a place for everything!!!! Once again many thanks I'm delighted you enjoyed your visit to Salmon Pastures and happy modelling. SAD
  15. Hello Mick,,, It certainly generated some interesting conversations during the Manchester exhibition,,, and each time I run it somehow it seems to get slightly better. Your assistance to convert it from dusty shelf blocker to "Pride of the Line" is much appreciated. As mentioned on previous posts I still have a few things I want to improve on the chassis but at least it is now actually presentable. Regards, SAD
  16. Hello DLT,,,,I was rooting about in the shed this morning and found the mag with the track plan. It was in BRM May 2016,,,, in the "Classic Layout Trackplans",,[ mmm,,, hardly classic to be honest] there are 1 or 2 errors with regard to the buildings but the track plan seems pretty accurate. Good luck with the planning,,,, SAD
  17. Crickey Alan Steady on old chap you'll be cutting and shaping brass next,,,, and we all know what that leads to!!! Nice one mate,,, the Laird of Little Bytham will be extremely proud. You do realise it is only a matter of time before you are seen in public at exhibitions rummaging in all those cardboard boxes under dealers stands. SAD
  18. Hello Ray & Polly, Likewise it was good to meet you over the weekend. Since we got back I have been fannying about on the Pastures blog with the shots of the Manchester show and found this which I thought may be of interest after our discussions https://www.flickr.com/photos/salmonpastures/8749455021/in/album-72157633524613344/ Alans camera does not pull any punches and if you magnify the shot you can get in amongst the grout!!! Never done this before so I do hope it works!!! SAD
  19. Many thanks Richard,,, probably as much to do with "micklner's" paintjob and "westerners" photo's as my tin bashing. Needless to say it isn't yet finished,,, I want to improve the lining on the driving wheels and cylinders before long,, and the safety valves should most definitely not be green!!! Pointed out by our mutual friend John Quick who was at the show on Saturday & it was really good to see him as he has not been well. I am about to post the rest of Alan's photo's on the Salmon Pastures Blog,,, but will leave you with this one,,,it really was a great show to finish on and one I will never forget.
  20. Have to say we are still receiving some wonderful building work on this thread,,,,,, and having just returned from doing the Manchester show can I offer another of "westerners" lovely pics of the "industrial area" which is only their to hide the fiddle yard!!!. Now the show is over I hope to get back to posting more regular pics.
  21. As if by magic "westerner" arrived this afternoon with a CD full of pics of the Manchester show,,, I will post them all on the Salmon Pastures Blog and offer these few to show how good a "happy snapper" the man is. Many thanks for the interest and once again Alan wonderful shots of a bloomin wonderful exhibition. SAD
  22. Hello DLT,,, many thanks for your kind words and I have to say I have never received so many notifications before all in one go. Thankyou. I'm afraid it is highly unlikely you will be able to see us in the future as the Manchester show will be the last time we take Salmon Pastures out,,,,, Retirement to a bit of sunshine is rapidly approaching and as we have got older I am convinced the layout has put on weight as well,,, we have been treading the boards for over 10 years now,,,, and both the operating team and the layout are getting a bit tired,,,, I will definitely keep modelling and updating the Salmon Pastures Blog but seeing it in the flesh I'm afraid you have missed the last train. With regard to a track plan,,,, we did feature quite recently in a BRM "Classic Layout Plans",,, I can't remember which one but I can find it for you when the layout is back on its legs in the shed. You can also have a look at lots of "westerners" pictures on the Salmon Pastures Blog Flickr Link,,, he certainly knows what he is doing with his electric box brownie and he regularly produces some cracking shots. Once again many thanks and happy modelling. SAD
