  1. Hi Sidecar, Such action may result in a different twist to the euphemism, "Axe Murdered Hedgehog" !!! Gibbo.
  2. Hi Mr Goldfish, The table shews tractive effort at determined speeds, 50mph for passenger locomotives and 25mph for goods locomotives. The calculation that you are using is start tractive effort that is 0mph. At speed the cut off is reduced so that the engines of the locomotive may be worked more expansively improving efficiency resulting in ta reduction of tractive effort. The figure of .85 pertains to the mean average steam pressure from the point of admission when the valve opens at the pistons lead position until the opposite edge of the valve opens to exhaust at 75% cut off. When the cut off is reduced so is the mean average steam pressure, remember exhaust is set function via the action of the combination lever as is the lead function. The LMS 4-6-4 Super Duchess had a start tractive effort of 42850 lbs and the 4-8-4 goods locomotive 47600 lbs with axle loading of 24 tons and 20 tons each. Both had 17.5" X 28 " cylinders and 6'6" and 5' 6" driving wheels with adhesion factors of 3.75 and 3.77 respectively. The maximum cut off would have been reduced to around 65% instead of the more usual 75-78% giving high tractive effort at designed running speed without causing the adhesion factor to be to low that slipping upon starting would be a serious problem. Gibbo.
  3. Hi Kieth, Tractive effort is not power, please don't send any one down that particular route of thinking. Treactive effort of a 350 hp class 08 shunter is 36000 lbs. Think about it !!! Gibbo.
  4. Hi There, Seventy one million's cylinders are 18" d X 28" s and Black Fives have 72" driving wheels when new, boiler pressure 250 lbs. If you wish to work out the adhesion factor then you have to divide the total driven axle loadings in pounds by the tractive effort. Seventy one million has a total driven axle loading of 147840 lbs (three axles at 22 tons) and a tractive effort of 39080 lbs giving an adhesion factor of 3.78. Gibbo.
  5. Hi Mr Goldfish, The tractive effort calculation for a two cylinder is as follows: TE = ( d X d X p X s / w ) X .85 d = Piston diameter in inches. p = Maximum boiler pressure in pounds per square inches. s = Stroke of piston in inches. w = Wheel diameter in inches. For four cylinders multiply the answer by two and for three cylinders by one and a half. I would have worked it out but you have not furnished us with leading dimensions as noted above. Gibbo.
  6. Hi Guy, When I wrote "real locomotive" I mean actual real locomotives, some of which have twenty two ton axle loads and run at 75mph on Network Rail sort of real ! Gibbo.
  7. Hi Folks, Only a small job, it is the lower part of the hoppers that represent the two compartments of the originals. The sizes have been guesstimated from photographs and made up form .030" plasticard. Once in place and even though they are not yet painted I can hardly see them, although if they were not there they may well be missed. Four lower hoppers laid out in differing orientations Two lower hoppers glued into place. Gibbo.
  8. Hi Ruston, Are P4 those that have really lovely fine scale wheels and track work to offset the ugliness of the huge great big knuckle coupling hung from the buffer beam ? I have to say I spent enough time with my profile and wear gauges along with wrestling real springs onto the flexible couplings of real axle boxes, in a real pit, under real locomotives, before then rawling on with spring adjusters while the locomotive floated on the Kelbus gear to be fiddling on with my models to that extent. I like my OO gauge stuff for its simplicity. Cheers, Gibbo.
  9. Hi Jamie, It is about time that the Police stopped running around issuing private debt notices by putting people under duress with threats of violence and upheld the law as the Police Oath requires them to do. I once had cause to stand a Policeman upon his oath for my not committing of any crime at all, he then resorted to placing me under duress with threats of violence, however, I pursued the matter by way of the commercial process and gained remedy. Here is, with no points on my license, the final proof from the unfortunately named Ministry of Justice: The point being is that the document has the words "remittance, advice, invoice, claim, expense and notice" written upon it and is therefore, by the terms of the Bills of Exchange Act, a private commercial debt instrument which I may should I wish consent to contract with. The form that I was put under duress, with threat of violence, to sign was also part of the very same private debt instrument. Unfortunately, as any contracts signed under duress under the Bills of Exchange are considered null and void it ended one-nil to me. It would seem that the policeman that used an unlawful threat of violence against me was no more the law than I or anyone else is. Also that, when he informed me that I was under caution and evidence would be used against me the same applied to himself, which in the end rather worked in my favour. Lenin had a phrase for people that conduct themselves in such a manner, "Useful Idiots" Ignorance is strength as George Orwell might say, Gibbo.
  10. Very probably for steel sleepers are of a much reduced depth compared to wooden and concrete allowing the depth of ballast to be retained while giving extra load gauge clearance due to the thinner section of sleeper. Gibbo.
  11. Hi Johnster, In Vol. II. I like the translation of the Russian graffiti ! Gibbo.
  12. Hi Corbs, Volume I. deals with E.S. Cox's apprenticeship at Horwich and his involvement in the testing of LMS locomotive types in the 1920's through to the volume production of standard LMS types of which most were to Stanier designs. Locomotive testing involved efficiency testing of extant types and trials of new ideas to either improve old locomotives or the development of new ones. Hang in there, best to read them in the order of writing. Another interesting book is, "Memoirs of a Locomotive Engineer" by Edgar J Larkin who trained underr the Midland at Derby and latterly a contemporary of E.S. Cox. Gibbo.
  13. Hi Corbs, A quality read, I do hope you have both volumes ! Gibbo.
  14. Hi john, The base vehicle is indeed an old Hornby Triang that has been lowered by about 2mm and had a lot of the webs cut out of it which were replaced replaced by .030" plasticard strips. I was busy with fifteen of them last year before I started this thread but I was spray painting them and as I do this outside winter put a stop for it is too cold. The FGA and FHA wagons will make an appearance sooner or later here once the weather warms up enough to spray outside. Thanks for the compliment, Gibbo.
  15. Hi Meil, One of the five types of Crime listed by Blacks Law Dictionary is termed, "Using mischief in ones contracts", ie. fraud. Should you then attempt to continue conducting commerce with out the relevant license you are then committing mischief in your contract (fraud), that being the contract you signed with the Government when you signed your license. You would also be committing fraud by invalidating any insurances that rely upon the holding of a valid license that require you to indemnify yourself for any losses cause in your commercial activity that being the driving of a vehicle. One of the most common mistakes is that of thinking crimes and offences are the same thing they are not. The crime is in the defrauding of the contract. Should you not understand either what you or I have written does not make me wrong ! Gibbo.
  16. Dear Jamie, Killing is a crime and that is what you would be jailed for, not for the road traffic offence that may have caused the death. It would seem that you have in fact corroborated what I stated initially. According to Blacks Law Dictionary there are five types of crime, perhaps you could tell me what they are. The miners strike incident where a concrete block was dropped onto a passing cars was murder by use of a concrete block, ie. the deliberate killing of someone and not therefore an offence. As an aside, your failure to understand what you or I have written does not make me incorrect. Gibbo.
  17. Hi Hobby, You can only be jailed if you commit a crime. Driving is covered by the road traffic act and is therefore classed as an offence, not a crime, hence withdrawal of privilege granted by license. As for jail time, I would suggest be careful of what you wish for ! Gibbo.
  18. Hi TS, Have you seen this contraption in Sir Douglas' post ! https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/741-the-forum-jokes-thread/&page=303 Now that would give you some chassis building fun. Gibbo.
  19. Hi Andy, Thanks for the information, I am aware that they are twin silo and have cut the bottom off the hopper and will rebuild the lower section when I get around to it. I have previously found the above threads of of yours and had a good look at the photos which were very useful. A more detailed description of the build is on my Ongoing Workbench Topic thread. Thanks again, Gibbo.
  20. Hi Porcy, Thanks for the video link, I do enjoy such videos that may be described as "of their time". No doubt just the kind of thing that gave Harry Enfield inspiration his Cholmondley-Warner and Greyson sketches, especially the pipe smoking in a chemistry laboratory ! Like so many things in life it seems that the pigment was discovered by chance which later gave rise to a very useful product. This is a part of the development I was unaware of. Cheers, Gibbo.
  21. Hi Folks, After seeing all of Rosie Boss' City of Truro conversions, I especially like the rebuilt Badminton 3297 Earl Cawdor. As a result here is my take on an imaginary 4-6-0 City of Truro contraption based upon a number 100's boiler on an old style frame set. Gibbo.
  22. Hi Folks, I have done a little mote upon the ICI Presflos for I found some copper wire that was only .003" under the diameter of the brass wire. As it is softer than the brass wire it will require more careful handling but it allowed me to fit the discharge top air pipes. I also gave them a once over with the remnants of a jar of BR Rail Blue that was starting to go off so I used it up quick so as to save my new jar for top coats, hence the reason the holes for mounting the hoarding board supplied with the kit are not yet filled. I'm still mot overly sure of the finished shade and I might mix some dark green into the Rail Blue. Gibbo.

  24. Hi Folks, I have painted the Cartic-4 set and it has come out quite well although there was slight bleeding under the masking of the lower deck. The reason for this is that it is quite tricky to get even my little finger in to press it down, i even used the end of a paint brush to try to make sure that the masking tape was firmly settled. There is a little touching up here and there and also repairs to the areas of failed masking but nothing much considering. The colours used are BR Blue for the sides and Diesel Roof Grey for the inner faces of the sides and the deck surfaces. Diesel Roof Grey looks good for the deck colour but from what I can see in photographs the inner faces of the sides ought to be BR Rail Grey. I might repaint the inner faces of the sides but I think it might look too bright and will then require toning down by weathering, in which case it may be easier to leave it. I think that I should perhaps have fitted the buffers before painting though! General view. Side view showing the articulation brackets that requires painting black. Gibbo.
