  1. Ours were named Bannister and Twiss and they both knew how to apply Zeno's paradox to stay ahead.
  2. My father was the unwilling passenger in an Anson when the pilot decided that he was going to fly underneath both bridges during the war. They all lived to tell the tale but I think it was definitely outside the scope of what was permitted at the time.
  3. I cannot recall seeing this type of bridge before but it does have the advantage of being operable from either side. Also, if the deck had been wide enough for the skewed track then it would have been twice as heavy. I was sure there would be wise words on the subject and my friend Google offers these attributed to Thor Heyerdahl: "Progress is man's ability to complicate simplicity".
  4. Wire in tube is so passé, I was hoping for some nematronic system! Is that a typo? Should that be worm in tube?
  5. Is that a typo? Should that be worm in tube?
  6. Definitely worth checking out especially as the society has superb resources, knowledge and publications. They also cover post-group, post-nationalistion and contemporary periods, although the emphasis is on the pre-grouping history.
  7. There is a very good article in the current MRJ (278) explaining how to do this.
  8. This lucky survivor is a John Jones and Son locomotive of 1864 and may be found in Madrid. They have a very interesting collection including one locomotive closely based on a Highland Castle.
  9. Now were it King's Lynn to Welshpool then it's already been worked out.
  10. My local model railway shop always hands over my copy of MRJ in a plain paper bag.
  11. Have we had this one yet? By Unknown author - old image, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=24457432
  12. Not the best of pictures but I saw these two in a museum recently and one of them shows an option for a hinged roof. It has been very interesting following your progress and it's good to see that you appear to be getting very close.
  13. Well done! I wondered when someone would get there.
  14. I expect that you had to take your woolly hat off then.
  15. It was said about Lord Louis as the Kelly sank, "There's no-one I would rather be with in a situation like this ... and no-one who could get me into such a situation quicker".
  16. Many thanks, later ER discussions and Google results tend to confirm. It must have come via the RNAS.
  17. My father had one or two: That's Aunty Mary's for anything marked A↑M; When the golden eagle lays an egg for pay day; Cat E for anything completely written off; 4-8 to the hangar doors (he thought that had its origins in the navy - i.e. muscle power required - was it 4-8 or 2-8 or 2-6 or two other low, even numbers?). He could be disparaging about TV representations of the RAF: "He's wearing his cap like a soda jerk (i.e. fore-and-aft rather than to the side) - anyone I knew would have been on a charge"!
  18. I thought the crime was the bus on the bridge
  19. It is a French military crane known as Diplodocus. Apparently it has been saved for posterity and is kept at a military base near Versailles. A book about it, in French, was published a few years ago ISBN: 2914818807
