His club, Edinburgh and Lothians Miniature Railway Club have some of his models, and details of his later writings

Excellent choice of prototype. Like others on here I cannot resist shunting locos, and this is one of my favourite prototypes. Well done Rapido.

Chris Ellis has written or edited a number of books over the years. Two that are particularly relevant to American railroading are: Modelling American Short Lines and Industry ISBN 978-0-904811-24-7 and Modelling American Railroads ISBN 978-0-904811-27-1, both published by his own company, Kristall Productions. (no longer trading).
He has also featured American models in two of his other books Building and Operating Small Layouts and More Small & Compact Layout Ideas, although those books also cover UK & European models as well.
Just to clarify his magazine work, after Airfix Model Trains, he edited Scale Trains (which became Scale Model Trains) and after that folded he published Model Trains International for about 20 years from 1995, until he finally retired around 2015.
Scale Rails International was a short lived magazine published & edited by Chris Ford after MTI had ceased. That only ran to about a dozen issues over 2 years. I had a subscription to that, but I'm afraid I cannot find my copies of that magazine at the moment, so cannot make any recommendations.

I love this. You have really captured the look of those half forgotten railway yards tucked away round the back of an industrial estate somewhere. Wonderful layout.

TT 2024 announcements, hope the 08 is green
Kernow are listing as 'Era 5' which I understand is 1956-64, so it should be green.

The Pullmans and tank wagons are shown as being out of stock at the Hornby site though they appear to be available on the Rails web page. I wonder if this is a mistake at one of the sites or if Hornby have released products to their stockists as a sweetener?
It's probably just that Hornby sold out of their stock quicker than Rails have. There have been plenty of instances mentioned in this thread where the Hornby website shows something in stock, and it's sold out two days later, or even the same day. Same thing happens with the 00 range, a model is sold out at Hornby, but a retailer somewhere in the country will have one sat on a shelf.

And Hattons are closing......were they stockists?
I don't think they were. They stocked the Peco TT:120 range (now sold out), but not the Hornby range.

No TT:120? Or will that be a separate announcement?
Yes. That is due in April.

They're actually Leyland Panthers, the Panther Cub was a different version with the 0400 engine rather than the 0680 in those. Portsmouth was the biggest operator of the club with Manchester second.
Thanks for that, I have updated my post.

The Leyland Panther was very popular with Preston Corporation, and a common sight when I was growing up.

They also had a batch with slightly different Marshall bodywork. Originally intended for Stratford Blue/Midland Red, but never used by them. They had the windows extended upwards, but only on the nearside.

Did Hornby ever make the Saddle tank in a Great Western livery?
If you mean the 'Smokey Joe' type, no I don't think they ever did.
I can't find it now, but I'm sure somebody on RMWeb modified one to look like 'Trojan' GWR 1340 now preserved.

Yes it should. Link here to one that Hattons were selling
If you click on the 2nd photo, it clearly shows light grey body components in the plastic bag. If it was unopened it looks like you got a 'Friday afternoon' kit where someone has picked the wrong parts when packing it.

This is an interesting one... Triang 0-4-0 chassis, absolutely, steps seem to be taken from one of the "Industrial tank" models (the USA outline 0-4-0 Triang did).
The cylinders are also quite clearly taken from a Kitmaster Pug, crosshead slidebars lengthened to fit the steps over them.
Unsure if this gives any pointers on the origins, but theres a few pointers as to components used on the model. Methinks it's a scratchbuild.
If you mean the side tank loco numbered 6042, that is not a kitbash. That's a standard Triang/Hornby trainset loco from about 1973/74

If you look under the 'international' locos http://www.hornbyguide.com/class_details.asp?classid=77
they made several slightly different bodies, fitted to at least 2 different chassis, around that time. (No, I don't know why either.)

I think I missed Cold Harbour Lane as well. There are some pictures of it in the April 1998 Railway Modeller for anyone who wishes to look it up.

PS. I couldn't find the etched tank side overlays on the website - or did you or James say that they weren't quite ready yet?
Here you go.

I would suggest it started life as a Triang R659 http://www.hornbyguide.com/item_details.asp?itemid=1141
It looks like running plate/steps, smokebox & chimney are similar to that loco. The 'toolboxes' on the top of the tanks look like they are from the Airfix pug kit, as do the dummy cylinders/crosshead. The cab front & rear may be Airfix pug as well. The rest of it looks like card or plasticard tanks/cabsides. Don't know about the dome, but that may be Triang as well.
That is an interesting kitbash, I like it.

So here’s a thought that just came up:
I’ve heard of collectors associations for niche ranges of models buying out the toolings of the models they collect to produce replica components, the Trix Twin collectors association owns most, if not all of the original TTR toolings, and a Wrenn collectors association exists too, owning a selection of Wrenn/Dublo toolings acquired from Dapol (though I haven’t found much info on this). Out of interest: Does a Kitmaster collectors association exist? If so, has anyone considered the thought of possibly purchasing the K’master toolings from Dapol should the range become discontinued? Outlandish maybe, but not impossible…
There certainly used to be a Kitmaster Collectors Association, website here : http://www.kitmaster.org.uk/CollectorsClub.htm#Ind
Their last journal was issued in 2006, so whether it is still going or not I cannot say. Some of the web links no longer work.

I’ve been doing a bot of work on Cwmdimbath’s backscene, and looking at possible suitable replacement/extensions, and discovered ‘Model Town Backscenes 00 Gauge Hills & Mountains Pack B (MT0057), from Lineside & Locos, who advertise on the bay of e. This is a photographic backscene featuring what look like spoil heaps with a mountain behind them, which I think has a distinctly valleys feel to it, and a suitably gloomy ambience as well. Quality looks good and price not extortionate; I’m considering one for my colliery background. Could be something like what you’re after, Wayne. No connection, possible customer.
Pack A (MT0056) has potential as well, but the mountains are a little more rugged.
They also have their own website, outside of Ebay.
http://www.linesideandlocos.co.uk/oo-gauge-page-3.html
Thanks for finding this supplier, they make some interesting backscenes, and different subjects from the usual 'country/town' ranges other suppliers offer.

Am I right in thinking that Hornby as well as Bachmann inherited some Lima tooling? This list gives that impression, apologies if my interpretation wrong.
Not to my knowledge. Hornby got all the Lima tooling, none went to Bachmann. There were some duplications of prototypes, eg Class 20/25/37/47 where models were available from both Lima/Hornby and Bachmann, but in those cases the toolings were developed separately by the relevant manufacturer.

I do wonder why Lima bothered producing their incorrect bogie version when the Mainline model already existed - and why Hornby thought/thinks it a good idea to keep producing it.
Because Lima were in competition with Palitoy/Mainline. Hornby still produce it because they have the moulds and they are in competition with Bachmann. It's good old capitalism, that's all.

I'm not familiar with the incident, but if the wagons overpowered the loco, causing the runaway, perhaps the rear part of the train derailed, uncoupling from the front part of the train in the process. The front part then continued down the hill to be diverted on to the Churnet Valley line?
