Of course there is always the possibility the admin has taken the site down for his holidays, it's an extreme way to do it, but it means he can rest on holiday without having to worry about users posting inflammatory content.

See this from the forums owners:

He wouldn't switch the forum off to go on holiday, it's entirely unplanned due to something the hosting company has done.  Being on holiday, he can't fix it until he gets back.

My first memory of rails in the road was near the Asda in Preston (Dundonald St, when it was in an old mill), where there were narrow gauge tracks set into a nearby street.  Can't find much on old OS maps to explain them, but there you go.

I remember those rails, they used to cross Fishwick View at an angle, then disappeared under somebody's front garden.  I had a mate who used to live in Walton View near there & you crossed the track to get to his house.

Newspaper hoarding reads "40 Killed in Train Crash". Wonder which that was?

The notes on Flickr say "I don't have the exact date of this this image but I wonder whether it is discernible: the billboard for the Evening Chronicle says '40 Killed in Train Crash'. On 4th August 1971 there was a crash near Belgrade in then the Yugoslavia that killed 35... perhaps this was taken or around that date?"

Hi, I think you need to scratch build a new roof rather than trying to make the old one fit. But looking at the dimensions of the van body I think they are H0 and not 00. Possibly something ex Lima or Jouef that they have mated onto a 00 chassis.

I think it's older than that, the body moulding dates from at least 1974, before they took over Lima or Jouef.

Downtown Portway (which was never too convincing) has been replaced by the lumber Factory.

Sorry Bob, but that name will have to go - that pun is terrible!!!! 🤣

There is also the slight dilemma of which way round to position it.....

I think I prefer it this way to the backscene. Any thoughts, anyone?

    Once again, Thanks, Bob!! 👍👍🙂🙂

    Definitely second way round, IMO.

    Edit, found my notes:

The Bulleid SOs transferred away from the Southern Region retained the same numbers but the first letter was changed to suit the region transferred to:

    1467/69/70/72/74/86/91/99/505 were S****S and became E****S

    1466/71/79/82/84/89/95/98/500/02/04 were S****S and became Sc****S

Some of these were repainted into lined Maroon and the new prefixes applied before transfer

Thank you for that list. I am modelling a Scottish branchline featuring one of these ex-Southern Bulleids & and I had only found 1466 & 1482. Good to know the rest of the numbers involved.

I'd like to know the dimensions but that looks awfully like 10 ft wheelbase to me. And Morton brake gear on a mineral wagon?

I think they are 17'6" chassis with 10' wheelbase.  Elsewhere in this forum, someone was doing a resin printed 16T mineral, that had to be stretched to fit the Hornby chassis.

Does the system recognise log in from a phone differently to a computer?

I activated premium from one PC ages ago and all three computers at home recognise it, however today I logged in from my phone whilst out & about and I have now received an e-mail telling me to activate my premium status!

Don't know the answer to your first question, but membership is up for renewal.  I had to renew my membership this morning (my debit card had changed since last year), and I have just had an email to activate my premium status.

Maybe it's to do with renewal rather than whether you use a phone or computer?

Actually I was wrong.  The 7plank chassis is exactly the same length as the vent van.  The only difference is that the plank wagon has the ‘doorstops’  moulded in under the doors.  Wheelbase appears to be the same for both of them. I thought the vans were longer?

I will keep the current designed length for these bodies and design a new chassis from scratch for my scale length version.  Unless someone announces a more suitable RTR chassis in the meantime.

It depends. RCH specifications did include both open wagons and vans that were 17'6". Early wagons of this length had 9' wheelbase, later ones 10' wheelbase. (This is a very general overview, there were different lengths/wheelbases for specialist traffic.)

The 16T mineral you have designed should be 16'6" long with a 9' wheelbase.  I think making it fit an existing chassis is a reasonable compromise, in the circumstances.  As others have said earlier in this thread, 00 manufacturers have made similar compromises in the past, and most people were happy to accept those models.

A J94 would be the same wheelbase/chassis as the Class 08?  So it would make sense as a future release.  Unless the 08 has some kind of design issues that would prevent the removal of the plastic frames.

The 08 is correctly outside framed, with extended cranks, the J94 is inside framed, so reusing the 08 wheels for the J94 will look ridiculous.  There may be some common ground in motors/gears perhaps, but I would hope we have moved on from 'one chassis fits all' and that each will have appropriate wheels & chassis detail for the relevant class.

Edit: Having checked, they're not the same.

    J94 4'3" wheels 11'0" w/base;

    08 4'6" wheels 11'6" w/base.

Oh, and reminded of this by features in the old RM...I picked up an October 1970 issue recently and there was an article by Don Towneley, obviously part of an irregular series I'd forgotten, about industrial steam.  Does anyone know if there's any sort of index anywhere to what drawings were published in that series?  Useful sources for the pugbashing thread, if I may bring the conversation back to that.  I've little idea where to look for authoritative drawings for industrial types otherwise, and wouldn't want to work just from photos.

There isn't a published index as such AFAIK, however, if you have a subscription to the digital version of RM, the entire archive is available online.  While it is searchable, it's not infallible.  I found reference to one of Mr Townsley's drawings in the letters page, when the article itself didn't come up in the search.

This is what I have found so far (given the limitations of the search function, it may not be a complete list.)

    Industrial Railways - Manning Wardle's magnum opus - 0-6-0 ST  Littleton No.4  May 1970

Industrial Steam - The Welshman - Manning Wardle - 0-6-0 ST  October 1970

Industrial Steam - We're only here for the beer! - Bass 0-4-0 ST  April 1972

Industrial Railways - Back to Littleton - Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0 ST  September 1972
