  1. In Great Western Branch Line Album there is a pic of two viaducts at Quaker's Yard. The stone viaducts seems to be being held up by a wooden structure between each arch! How did they come to be in this state and are they still standing today?
  2. Hi Phil That's not it but thanks for a link to that book as I was not aware of it .So, cheers! I remembered today that in the book I was looking for there was a pic or two of a summer special and the caption described the route of the train from Manchester as taking now ( by this time ) the clc to Aintree and then up the Ormskirk line to Burscough Jnc in order to reach Ormskirk
  3. Can anyone direct to the title of a book I saw long ago and never bought. An illustrated largish SoftBack which covered the Southport to Preston line and perhaps other locations around Preston . I bet someone here knows it. Much appreciated in advance! Len
  4. I think I'm beginning to see the attraction now! One thing it has made me realise is that our Preserved Railways are less under represented in terms of a variety of coaching stock then locos are they ? Yes/No? On another point, would it have been normal then to have seen, say, a train on ex LNER metals made up of ex Thompson and Gresley carriages?
  5. Would I be correct in thinking that the set of sidings that existed next to the short link between New Basford and Basford and Bulwell were carriage sidings?
  6. Did Carlisle have a set of sidings given over exclusively to carriages in the 48-68 period please? If so, where were they?
  7. I’d be interested to know if any freight trains off the Waverley route terminating at Carlisle made their way into Carlisle beyond Canal Yard or did they all terminate here?
  8. No photos right this mo but on a similar theme, I’m always amazed how you can follow an old dismantled French line and then find in the middle of nowhere an isolated stretch say a thousand yards or so that was never lifted and is in splendid isolation . Very odd . I’m not talking about velo rail here either , these are stretches that were simply not lifted . I’ve always found it very curious . Following routes in google Earth I would reckon I’ve come across this at least twenty to thirty times.
  9. So what would you say is the missing piece as regards rtr models in 4mm . And yeah , I’m getting into this subject! t
  10. I had the realisation the other day that while my steam loco class ID skills are pretty good for Someone who was only 8 when steam went finito , I know almost nothing about coaching stock of the same 48-68 period. I wouldn’t know a Bsk from a ....well whatever! Wondered if perhaps I’m missing out on a source of extra rail pleasure here by this stage of ignorance! Len
  11. It’s the second such incident at Kirkby. I think the first was late 1980, s if I recall. Also in 1875 ( I think) there was a massive rear end collision about 20 yards to the west between an excursion and a freight. There was also the post war accident just up the line at Simonswood which resulted in lives lost . Maghull is another station that seems to have had more than its fair share of rail calamity too over the years. This combined with 2or 3 bad smashes at Ormskirk and the awful ‘ head on’ at Burscough adds up the old Elr lines in the area being a tad unlucky
  12. So this is how the line looks in Train Simulator. Pretty good I feel. I ran a freight out to Creetown and back behind a Jumbo . The Jumbo is a free download from Caledonia Works. It's very nice too . Hope you enjoy the pics.
  13. What class of diesel is that right at the end of the film at Dumfries?
  14. It seems theres a lot of you out there with lots of knowledge of the route! Thanks all for taking the time to reply. Len
  15. Excellent replies everyone. Thanks for taking the time to reply . So apart from 05 and 08 no diesels then? Wondered -Jintys anywhere ? Len
  16. Thanks both. Great replies. Quite a mixture all in all then. Can anyone suggest a good pictorial book on this line too?
  17. Can anyone tell me please what loco's were used on this line post 1948? I have the route (and very good it is too) on Train Simulator and wondered if I really should be running a B1 on it - I suspect not! Thanks in advance! Len
