  1. Not much chance of that happening in my area when you look at the state of some of the council owned properties.
  2. During my long career as an electrical engineer I've done a fair amont of HGV driving, mostly for agencies so I met a huge variety of HGV drivers, virtually all of them had HGV/LGV SatNags. It always amuses me when people that have probably never sat in an HGV cab let alone driven one start spounting nosesence about a subject they know nothing about.

  4. Very useful thanks. Piry I cannot find some HO tram setrack (I know Tillig do some but not tight enough radius & the supply is a bit erratic (even direct from Germany).

  6. Always one with a smart remark. I should maybe have stated "natural navigable habitat for the size of the boat" instead of just "natural habitat".
  7. AFAIK most platforms in Europe are lower as are the entrances of the double decker stock - the extentable ramp/platform is a good idea. Also, station platforms tend to be less curved, especially in Switzerland where they are often dead straight so that the driver can see down the whole length of the train through his mirrors. I do have to comment favourably on the assistance given by the TOC's when travelling with my wife in a wheeelchair - provided that you give them a realistic notice they will provide assistance at both ends of the journey - fair play to them.
  8. As an aside to this I often wonder why boats are not usually relocated using their natural habit (assuming that they are operational). It could of course be cheaper in some circumstances, then again if you have a boat like that & have to count the pennies then you probably can't afford it anyway.
  9. I did read on (after commenting) & would agree that the latter posts had some merit. I would have thought that my description of children as "brutes" was clear to anyone (except those devoid of a GSoH) was tongue in cheek. Personally, I stand my previous comments that we all have a duty of care to ourselves & those that we are reponsible for.

  14. This discussion is a perfect example of "a little knowledge can be dangerous". I've made my points as a professional electrical engineer who spent most of his time fault finding/putting other peoples work right (a lot of it on 12v display lighting so working in similar voltages as being discussed here but far, far higher currents, up to 50a) but apparently I don't know what I am talking about. My layout (24' x 10') has had the wiring installed & tested as I've already described & never felt the need for crude "coin tests" as I'm confident with my work. As it happens I've had the odd derailments at the futhest point from the boosters & instant trip out. I'm using a Z21 & 2 x Lenz boosters. I'm now finished with commenting, other people looking for advice can make their own choices based on what they read. Enjoy the rest of your Bank Holiday Weekend.
  15. Looks like the bus cable/wire could very well be the issue. 2.5mm mains cable is single strand & diffecult to work with - stranded from someone like RS or CPC will be much better. (cue : those who have used mains cable "without problems" & the skip scavengers).
  16. Some vehicles activate the hazzards under heavy braking, which I think could confuse - if it flashed the brake lights it would be better. Durite produce a unit for trailers which does this under heavy braking.
  17. Are you an electrical engineer ? AC, DC, DCC - the principles of electrical current is still the same.

  20. I know of a couple of people who managed it somehow - me ? no, never felt the need to as I have a programming track that will take the longest train I run. Anyway, Railcom is disabled on my fleet. Each to their own.
  21. "Coin test" will not put anything under load for long & when you think about it could actually be dangerous with a high powered system. It will never have time to allow a bad (dry) joint or other connection to increase it's resistance under load. Continue abusing your system under short conditions by all means, it's your system after all. As an electrical engineer I would never attempt to fault find using a dead short, not good electrical practice. You do it your way & I'll continue to do it as a professional. Have a nice weekend.
  22. Although quite a distance away I do have family in the area & would have offered help myself but the OP came accross with a bad attitude.
  23. Even so it should be better than that. I used to drive HGV's for a well know Supermarket that started to buy "guvnors motors" (DAF's) - by the time they had covered 20k (kilometers, not miles) the floor by the driver feet was in tatters, trim loose in the cab & rattling like two skeletions have a s*** on a tin roof. They were worse than IVECO's (I Virate Evertthing Comes Off), in contrast they had some Scania's & Mercs that have covered "moon & back" miles & not a rattle (nicer drive too).
  24. PoM is OK if you are very careful or you could change CV's of everything that is on the track at one time.
  25. One of those things easy to show, diffecult to describe. A fairly cheap multimeter will do the job, absolute accuracy is not over important as long as you can see where any variations are.
