  1. By that time EV's will be obsolete themselves as other technology is perfected. IMHO anyone who converts Series Land Rovers to electric should be tortured, then electrocuted........
  2. Of course said "brute" does not deserve death or serious injury & risks should be minimised, however, the risks should be minimised all round - maybe taking mobile phones off parents who cross the road with "brute" in one hand & mobile phone in the other would be a start, but that's another issue in itself.
  3. True, but unfortunatly many of todays parents are from the "always somebody else fault/responsibility" generation - common sense/duty of care to oneself is not being handed down. Would people of any age stand less than a metre away from a platform edge unless there was a stationary train by the platform ? I'm afraid that there are. It may be the end of mkI's on the mainline but it probably won't make much difference to the vast majority of fare paying passengers (including myself). Surely, if you really want the "the mkI experience" then you can do that on a heritage line ?
  4. IIRC he would not licence the product because (his words) "you can't trust the foreigners to make anything properly". So, he had a captive market all to hinmself.
  5. Speaking as a European HO modeller the comparing Hornby with "old" Lima is interesting. Later Lima (retooled) products were excellent but not in time to save them & eventually they were swallowed up by Hornby. Hornby don't seem to have capitalised on the excellent ranges they now have in their stable - Lima, Jouef, Rivarossi. Having said that they are in a crowrded market & maybe, just maybe the parent company puts potential buyers off (IIRC the first "new" locomotive the group produced was the BR58 wgich was not exactly trouble free).
  6. Not quite that easy - exhibition venues are getting more and more expensive and space is often at a premium.
  7. You could probably make that comment on the great majority of RMWeb threads.
  8. Parents are also responsible for keeping their brutes under control & out of danger.
  9. As a 4 x 4 driver maybe you could tell me what I've missed about myself.
  10. Although I am an enthusiastic DCC user I appreciate that DCC is not for everyone. DCC is not supposed to make up for mechanisms that could be better. However, DCC will make a good mechanism even better.
  11. & that is the perfect time to have a "cull" of locomotives you no longer/rarely use & us ethe proceeds to pay for DCC.
  12. Summed up perfectly - you can also get a similar effect from vehicle LED lighting on Dashcams.
  13. If you can bear to look at a European Manufacture have a look at a Roco Z21 & 2 x wi-fi Multimaus - everything you asked for.
  14. Without physically checking the fleet I would say that all of my European tender drive locomotives have fixed "bogies" & use sideways movement to enable curves to be negotiatd.
  15. European HO has a different approach - helix's are common & traction is very important, hence why many locomotives have traction tyres. There are a few HO locomotives in my fleet that do have traction tyres but I simply do not suffer from "crud". Crud will only spread if it's on the rail tops top start with - maybe, this (dare I say it) is the result of lazy &/or bad housekeeping ? I have a couple of Roco/Piko "Track-Cleaning" wagons perminatly running with the springs removed so that it's just the weight of the cleaning pads on the rail tops. I also use some of thge Gaugemaster axel-hung pads. Or another thing to consider is that maybe the Europeans use a better quality material for their tyres ?
  16. Nobody does "ugly" like the North Americans !
  17. Maybe it's me - what scale are they please ? Prices seem really reasonable.
  18. In the past I have exhibited a couple of layouts & I don't like it when people seem to think it's OK to lean on the baseboard edge. Yes, you can have barriers &/or perspex but I like people to be able to see closely. What puzzles me though is that one of the clips on RMW shows someone talking about a layout whilst leaning on it, half an arms worth !
  19. The model depicted is an older Roco design - the later ones are DCC ready (socket in tender), smaller motor with flywheel & a carden shaft (small diameter & hardly noticable) to drive the locomotive driving wheels. Although this particular model does not have kinetic coupling between the locomotive & tender visually it is far superior to what UK manufactures expect modellers to accept - they would do well to take note. I have a number of Roco Locomtives with this design (converted to DCC) & they are superb peformers in every respect. The traction tyres give no issues either.
  20. It is a problem with most things thesedays - too many people assume that you know the basics & RMW is no exception, in fact, IMHO it is worse in some respects as many members over-complicate things. I would suggest that you start simple after taking some time to choose your controller - visiting a shop &/or exhibition stand with choices will help a lot there, if not speak to people like Coastal DCC or DCC Train Automation for advice. Follow up with a couple of locomotives & a "test/learning" oval with a couple of sidings and you will soon get the hang of it and be ready to progress further.
  21. The speaker in a steam outline locomotive should be in the smokebox, after all, that's the end that the sound comes from on the prototype. Recently, I had a Trix BR05 - a long locomotive & the speaker was in the tender, once my ears were attuned to the sound comming from the "wrong" end of the locomotive I could not live with it, so off it went.
