  1. Well, I took the whole thing apart, and it seems that was was the motor itself vibrating, but there wasn't much I could do to help and I decided to put up with it. I reassembled it, put it on the track (DCC) and forgot that I had the DC blanking plate still in there. It now appears to be properly dead.
  2. Thanks. Have taken the bogies off and they rotate fine, and it works well at low power. It’s just this vibration and noise. Only happens in one direction, which I think should be a clue if I knew what it meant!
  3. I'm using flexitrack and streamline points to make the trackwork look natural, but 2nd and 3rd radius Peco settrack for the sharp curves at either end of the layout (my layout is only 4 foot wide). It's the best of both worlds and they work fine.
  4. Thanks for the music video. I'm a big fan of the Beach Boys. But if anyone has a more sensible answer to my question, I'd be grateful.
  5. I've just received a Bachmann Class 66 I bought from someone on Facebook, and it's noisy when running in just one direction at low to medium speeds. It sounds very similar to when a wheel isn't on the track properly and is catching on the sleepers. I've taken it apart, and it seems that both of the yellow drive shafts seem to vibrate a lot more while this is happening. I can see the shafts vibrating even when the loco is off the track, but the noise gets quieter. I've already had one of the bogies off, originally thinking it was a gear slipping and don't want to take it apart any more unnecessarily. Does anyone familiar with the loco have any idea why the cause might be?
  6. Thanks. As I understand it, the sectors were pretty loosely adhered to, so I could change the sector and still use it with my aggregate wagons. I'd just prefer to change as little as possible. (Using Rule 1, I'm happy to overlook incorrect running numbers, but not the liveries for some reason!)
  7. Does anyone know when the last Class 60 in Trainload Construction sector livery was finally repainted? This site says that 60043 still carried the livery in 1999, but looking at photos on Flickr, I don't think that is the case https://railrevisited.blogspot.com/2021/02/class-60-locomotive-visual-history.html#more I've seen coal sector ones into the 2000s. I've managed to pick up a Hornby Class 60 in this livery, and I'm hoping to run it alongside some passenger trains from the early privatisation era.
  8. Yes. That would be very easy. (In my case, I’ve made each section different as they are different heights so it wouldn’t work). There is also a hidden siding behind the wall, so the plastic has the advantage of being robust if I need to remove it on occasions.
  9. I made the wall model and UV mapped a stone texture onto it, so I can’t distribute the model with the texture, and without it, there’s not much point!
  10. Sorry to drag up an old thread. Does anyone know how late the blue/grey mk2a coaches survived on the Western region? I’ve seen some photos of brake coaches still in that livery in the early 90s, but how about TSO? My layout is set in 1990 and I can get hold of some blue grey TSOs but not NSE livery ones.
  11. Here's a link to the arches on Tinkercad: https://www.tinkercad.com/things/aUgYR0jDsCO Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to distribute the wall texture as it's licensed for "personal use only" but I'd be happy to provide a short tutorial if anyone is interested.
  12. Thanks. The plan is to move on to tunnel portals next, then a viaduct. Ultimately, I’d like to design all the buildings on the layout from scratch and then print them using a combination of FDM and SLA, but there’s a lot of learning to be done.
  13. I wasn't sure whether to start a new thread or risk hijacking someone else's, so I decided on a new one, and I'll add new photos over the coming months. I've been learning 3d printing and have a Creality Ender 3 (FDM) and an Elegoo Mars 2 (SLA). I've been following JCL's excellent Blender tutorials. My first railway print was an engineer's brick retaining wall - all FDM, created in Tinkercad. The bricks were largely acceptable, but near the limit of what a FDM printer can produce. Second was a 2m long retaining stone wall created in Blender, using UV mapping for the stone texture, printed as 10 sections. I printed it vertically to get maximum resolution, which needed a large raft to keep it stable.
  14. 10% (everyone) or 15% (Nectar card members) off the Rails of Sheffield eBay store. The offer runs until Thursday 19th August at 23:59 and 3 redemptions can be made using the code per account. The code NECTARBONUS will need to be used at checkout. Non nectar members can use the code HAVE10OFF to receive a 10% discount (min spend £20 / max discount £50). https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/railsofsheffield
  15. Thanks. Why do manufacturers do this? No wonder the prices of second-hand stock goes sky-high after a couple of years.
  16. I've noticed that the non-sound versions of the 117 have been taken off Bachmann's website, and are sold out in a lot of places. Have they been discontinued already?
  17. More items added to the seemingly never-ending TMC sale. https://www.themodelcentre.com/sale I've only looked at the modern image locos, and while there's nothing spectacularly cheap, there are a few items with £20 or so off, such as the Hornby Class 60 in Construction Livery - £135 down from the usual £160ish.
  18. Hornby Hogwarts Castle set (rebadged Olton Hall loco, 2 coaches, track and controller) £108.49. Usually around £150. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hornby-R1234-Potter-Hogwarts-Express/dp/B07N88MGS3/ref=sr_1_11?dchild=1&keywords=Hornby&qid=1624269888&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&sr=8-11
  19. Thanks. Is there way to read them easily on a tablet device? The web version isn’t great for that.
  20. Another Amazon deal. Hornby 2 car Class 156 DMU in Regional Railways livery for £86. It's the ex-Lima body with poor underframe detail and no lights etc, but a good price for what it is. Don't click through unless you're interested as it may well push the price up! https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hornby-R3773-Railway-Locos/dp/B07X66RZ72
  21. I got train detection working in JMRI, but found tracking a train around the layout very hit-and-miss. I haven't got any experience of RocRail but I switched from JMRI to iTrain and everything became a whole lot easier.
  22. Thanks, Andy. That's worked. It's difficult to know how much pressure to put on things if you're not confident you're in the right place.
  23. Hi. I'm hoping this is the right sub-forum. I'm trying to remove the motor from a 1970s Hornby Thomas & Friends "Gordon" so I can use a Strathpeffer Junction CD motor kit, but I can't work out how to separate the motor from the metal chassis. Does anyone know? Thanks, Neil
  24. Thanks for sorting out my gold medallion. £25 is a great offer. Well worth me renewing early!
