  1. I picked up the first issue with Mallard for £2.99 a couple of weeks ago, then posted images on LNER Info. Unfortunately no one else could find a copy. It will be interesting to hear what coverage it is now getting. Like you, mine came from Sainsbury as well, however WHSmiths seem to be ignoring it. It is a shame as the models are quite good for the price.

    The hinged type I did not get on with. The non hinged should be fine, but you may have to dress the tips as per my earlier post. I have a collection of expensive, cheap, and secondhand all of which gave good results after dressing the tips. This major improvement for me was recognising what position to hold the pen in and how thick the paint should be. I had always assumed the paint had to be like ink in consistency and never got good result. Thickening the paint based on Coachmann's comments helped beyond belief.

     

    Regarding cleaning the non hinged type I have always run a sheet of paper through the tips to clean without having to reset the gap. There is usually enough spring in the blades to allow this.

  3. The models arrived direct from Hornby yesterday so may not be in the shops yet, although I would suggest they are imminent. Of the four types of vehicle they are easily the most interesting.

  4. Some EM gauge conversions appeared last night and they look very good. The ones on show were maroon, and a little gentle weathering made all the difference.

    You are right. They look too clean and should be weathered. I just don't have the heart to do it yet.

  5. Going back over old ground, l know, but it's 'Spot the difference' time.

    l've dug out this old, reasonably head on shot of the real thing, to compare with.

     

    l'm still trying to suss out how to overlay the plan onto Hornby's front end, using Corel Paint Shop Pro, but, l'm afraid l'm going to have to 'phone a friend'.

    Interesting idea, so I have attempted just that. Of course just overlaying the drawing you would not see the lines so I have turned them red to make them stand out more. I have not resized any of the images but have shuffled the overlays up or down to give best fit. I will let you draw your own conclusions from these.

    As I understand it, the regional allocation had to do with money (responsibilty for repairs) and many coaches that were never ever ouside Scotland never got SC labelling.

    The photo in question claims to have been taken in Peterborough.

     

    If what you say is true regarding not all vehicles getting their SC prefix then we really have a minefield to catch out the unwary.

  7. Amazing detail even on the ends and bufferbeams Mike. Can you tell us Hornby's full range? 6-compartment brake third by any chance?

    Not certain I understand your reference to "full range". There are 4 suburbans due, 2 of which we have already seen. Still to come are the CL and 4 comp brake third.

    The only other additions I am aware of are the corridor full brake and the buffet car in blue/grey livery.

  9. 81025 was originally 31875, so was already in the Southern Scottish Area. What happened to it and the others that weren't transferred to the Scottish Region then? I don't currently have access to Bishop to check.

    There is a photo of 81025 on page 86 of Harris' LNER Standard Gresley Coaches taken in 1955 still showing the E81025E version of the number.

  10. E81025E allocated to the Southern Scottish Area and later Scottish Region, so shouldn't it be SC81025E ?

    E82326E allocated to the GE Section and remained there

    Not according to the information sheets produced by the LNERSG and available on lner.info.

  11. Looking at the numbers on the crimson samples, and with information from the C J G Bishop monographs:

     

    Brake Third E86135E - this one was converted to push-pull for the Epping-Ongar service in 1949.

     

    Third E82291E - was Sc82291E in BR days and was written off in the accident at Wormit in 1955.

     

    First E81036E - was Sc81036E in BR days, worked on Clydebank services, remained all first, withdrawn 11/61.

     

    Hopefully Hornby will re-think the numbers before going into production.

    It looks as if the production numbers are different. From photos published recently we have:

    1st: E81025E

    3rd: E82326E

  12. I do feel this remark also has a place in the current thread debating Hornby's present and future role in our hobby. Clever and creative people world-wide find their efforts compromised in the name of company policy or shareholder demands. A little remark in that thread indicating the willingness at technical level might be kind?

    Having had a quick look at that thread, I think I will keep out for the moment!

  13. From the images I've seen posted on another site, the 60ft Gresley corridor full brake is the bees knees with correct tumblehome and placement of beading. Suburbans likewise. So there should be nothing to fear. I think it is also common knowledge that Mike Trice has had some involvement with their develiopment. There was one remark that the varnished teak looked unlike that on preserved vehicles and someone else said they could blame 'coach' for that! I wasnt involved and its not my fault if Hornby looks in on RMweb..... :D

    Guilty of both charges, the latter being tongue firmly in cheek. As stated in the early reply, the tumblehome is improved but the underframe is still too wide. That does not apply to the suburbans which (fingers crossed) are as perfect as can be, being based on brand new mouldings. Might regret that statement as I am sure some smart Alec's will be looking to see if they can prove me wrong.

     

    I have said it before, and I will say it again, that the response and enthusiasm of the Hornby engineers has been a major factor in the quality of these and I would not like to take praise away from them.

  14. Also if the full brake has the right profile and beading would it be suitble to change to the bogies to the Fox type

    To the best of my knowledge the profile is better and as you say has the beading in the correct position, however the underframe is still overwide being based on the earlier moulding.

     

    Either way, hope people like them.

    From memory they do not have the cast in buffer beam as you use the SP moulded parts.
