I wonder how many others are scared of me?

I most certainly was! I felt like I was approaching a King when I first met you at Doncaster Show about 5/6 years ago!

I don't think we spoke much at all the first time we met, but I was absolutely taken aback by some unpainted but finished locos you had on display, which was my first exposure to kit built stock. The bug for building 'proper' model railways had bitten.

Is there a simple app to do this on the iPhone? Or is it still a case of post processing on the pc?

I don't think iPhone's have the processing power to have stacking software unfortunately, as far as I'm aware, an app doesn't exist. I use Adobe Photoshop on my Mac to do all the appropriate editing.

What will be very interesting when 'comparing' any photographs of Mike's and mine, will be to see how the stacking process works. He took at least 12 shots of each composition, varying the focus in each one. I just took one shot, relying on optics for the depth of field.

I've been experimenting in Stacking recently, and it's a game changer for us iPhone users. It takes time and effort, but is well worth it when you want to show something off, and not have half the locomotive out of focus!

    Hi

We have had a light snow fall over Haymarket MPD.

The snow is not photoshopped in any way.

    Thanks Tony,

The only minor hiccup has been me blowing up my DCC system……

In the queue, how longs this queue :read:

    Excellent, thanks Tony.

How on earth did you do that?!?!?!

That must take some doing, especially with modern fail safe trips in the controllers!

If this means you're in the market for a new DCC System... the Digitrax DCS210 will be well suited for your needs ;)

  6. Some of you may know I’m building a model based on Escrick. It’s not that far away for me so I decided to travel up to measure up the bridge that still exists, so I can draw it in CAD and turn it into a kit.

I took this photo to show how much the location has changed in 70 years…B32FB562-0B85-4BAE-B23B-C0619746EF74.jpeg.8fe431515310eb35e10971320b442ec3.jpegE3985B39-CD7A-4D7F-BCD7-776038EF77B0.jpeg.24a9d9dd1738810ceed19a4e4f1fe194.jpeg

    Hi

My last photo for today is again A2/1 60510 Robert The Bruce but taken from a different angle showing a more detailed look of the turntable as well.

I have said it before and say it again I do like the look of the Thompson Pacific's.

This is the only metal Kit build model locomotive I have on the entire layout, it's not my work but what a beauty it is.

What kit is this please, David?

I'm wanting one for my layout. I have one in as built condition, but it's EM. I've been trying to weigh up if I should convert her to OO and 1958 condition, or build one from scratch!

    Good morning Dylan,

The anecdotal evidence I've heard about this (from someone who recalls it) is that it was found at Hadley Wood and was written as 'I died waiting for Cicero'.

    Regards,

    Tony.

Thanks Tony, I knew I wasn't going insane! Yet anyway, I'm starting my wiring tomorrow...

I take it no picture exists of this vandals act?

  9. Morning everyone,

I was wondering if anyone can help me out here, I remember hearing about some 1950s/60s graffiti at a station or similar somewhere along the ECML that said something like 'Have you seen Cicero?'

Have I completely made that up? Or was that actually a thing? I know she was very rarely found South of the border!

  10. Good evening everyone, hope everyone has had a brilliant and safe festive period!

Some of you may know I’ve been planning to build Deerness Valley Junction, but I’ve decided this was too much to cram in on my 15x2ft boards, so I’ve had to change my plans, and have since decided to build something resembling Escrick. A relatively small ECML station just south of York (before the Selby Diversion rerouted it)796B524A-91B8-4C03-8237-1C81A7342AE7.jpeg.6d921e0f6b085f8a752f1eb1bcfc584d.jpeg

I’ve thrown some loose track and stick down, and it appears to fit nicely and suit all my requirements!

Only issue is I’m rather set on having a branch line, so I’ve decided to add one. Rule 1 n’ that!

    FD8BEC09-E1D7-41B7-B05C-98A7BA409B19.jpeg.382516d7c92b100a78d67e5e2273727c.jpeg

But, I’ve come a blank with the track plan. I can’t for the life of me think what the permanent way would like that will allow pick up goods to be picked up/dropped off by both up and down branch line trains.2AC2F41F-427E-4872-BF94-C589B7F68E4C.jpeg.fe335eb53d4a45707c6c402d0b0b21a1.jpeg

So far, the best I’ve come up with is what’s crudely sketched below, but someone pointed out that the single slip doesn’t look right. In this plan, all pick up goods would have to stop in the Down Branch, where the loco can go about its business.

Does anyone with more Permanent Way knowledge than me know what the track plan would look like that would allow pick up goods to operate in both directions? I’d much appreciate any advice, my mind’s drawing a blank!

    Many thanks everyone!

It seems universally acknowledged now that the Hornby W1's steps are way out of gauge. Having mentioned it on the appropriate thread, all correspondents have reported the same.

I'll put the same pictures on here.

    W1.jpg.e0053263fff5337add6c9066913f58b7.jpg

The only original W1 I've run on LB previously was this SEF kit-built one (builder unknown). Since it has no steps, clearance issues didn't arise.

    1825236411_GresleyBeat04W1onexpress.jpg.4a17d493d500deece108a80b9c8c9d83.jpg

This is a South Eastern Finecast W1 running on The Gresley Beat, complete with steps.

The 'Beat has no platforms, but these steps don't seem to be too far out.

Are the steps ‘correctly’ out of gauge? My Hush Hush was relegated to running around my friends fiddleyard loop, clear of any platforms or other inconsiderate lineside details!

Safe to say, Hush-Hush will be my gauging loco when I get started on Deerness…

Occasional a surprise can be a wonderful thing.........

This lunchtime, our postman delivered a little box.

    In it was this..................

    218153386_DylanSandersonwagon.jpg.680eb8c832786ff620f2c714fac7cc94.jpg

It's a gift from Dylan Sanderson, which he's built from a 51L white metal kit for a Dia. C10 NER 12T open goods wagon.

The reason for making it for me is because I've given him assistance in his building models. He states 'It might not be up to LB standards' (he's talking b0ll0cks of course!).

What a lovely surprise. Thank you ever so much, Dylan.

I'll paint it, and it'll definitely find use on Little Bytham; especially since it's been so well-made.

Dylan is one of the team in Scale Model Scenery.

Glad it arrived safely @Tony Wright, sorry it's not painted, I definitely don't have the ability to paint and number wagons yet!

If the couplings aren't suitable, blame @Jesse Sim, I couldn't get them to work so he told me to just solder them in!

    Merry Christmas everyone,

    Dylan

I note I'm mentioned in despatches in the latest issue of Railway Modeller (Comment, page 59), where it's noted that I 'set out to model one subject, and one subject only', making it almost a lifetime's work. In this I'm paired with Ian Nuttall (who's far more noble because he does most of the modelling on his S&C creation himself). I wonder whether this 'Comment' piece will cause the same stir mine did about four years ago where I suggested (among other things) to always observe the prototype, try to make things rather than just buy and always help others in their own modelling.

Anyway, it set me thinking; thinking about conversations I had with the late Roy Jackson, who was also (very) single-minded in his approach to modelling. We both agreed that to model a prototype, a main line prototype (in Roy's case, a very big one in Retford), then a huge commitment was necessary in terms of time, research, resources and dedication, etc, if a project (or projects) was ever going to be completed (in Roy's case, that's up to others now). Endless hours spent in pubs, watching telly, going on holiday and all the other 'distractions' would have to be subordinate to the making of the model. Like Roy, I've been lucky to have worked with a team (though there's more of Roy in Retford than there is of me in Little Bytham). My trainset is also considerably smaller (though the trains are the same length), making it easier to have 'finished' it.

So, what might be concluded from the above ramblings, with regard to modelling a prototype main line (at least 30' long in 4mm)?

To model an actual prototype location, more 'discipline' might be needed, because most of the principal decisions regarding site, structures, size, topography, etc, have already been made for you.

No mucking about deciding where and what things should go.

Be prepared to expect to take a very large amount of time - years, even decades - before 'completion' is achieved, especially if you're a 'one man (or woman) band.

Don't expect to achieve anything approaching 'realism' (on a large scale) if you're reliant on RTR/RTP.

Expect to have to make a large number of things oneself (unless one has a weighty chequebook and just commissions work by others).

Acknowledge the benefit of teamwork, but only if any team displays consistent and uniform modelling skills across the whole spectrum.

Be prepared for it to cost a fair bit (loads if your layout is all commissioned work). With regard to the last point, costs can be mitigated by spreading them over a long time period, and/or, in Little Bytham's case, by 'horse trading' different skill sets among members of the team.

Be very single-minded over 'standards'? Most of the most accurate layouts I've seen have not been that 'democratic', which rather rules out many vast club layouts where 'everyone has a go', regardless of their abilities.

Insist (to the point of zeal) on the highest running standards.

I'm sure there are many more 'conclusions' one can draw, and I'm also sure there are many superb layouts which don't follow the above points.

    Food for thought?

Then there's me... slap bang in the middle!

My current layout, 15x2ft Scenic OO Gauge, is influenced heavily on Deerness Valley Junction. Same track plan, same buildings, and same atmosphere as well as same location, so the trains are the same. But, I'm having to 'bunch it up a bit' to get it to fit on my boards, but hopefully it will give the same impression.

But, with the NER buildings I've designed with work, and that gorgeous NER footbridge I bought off of you Tony, I've got to have a station! So, I'm superimposing one onto the track plan, just a small simple 2 platform station on the Consett Branch.

Hopefully this will allow me to enjoy the benefits from both sides of the fence... I don't have to worry about what to do with the track plan or anything, but I can enjoy the liberal freedom of deciding 'I want a station here!'

Been an interesting few days in the railway facebook groups.

    My W1 arrived today

Now I’m probably going to be shot down in flames for this (cue AC/DC song) but am I the only one that’s A: sick of seeing it and B: not that overly joyous about a Hornby W1?

You rarely seen a W1 on LNER layouts, due to there only being a SEF kit, when you did see one it was almost like the real thing, “Hush Hush” but now every man and his dog will have one. I feel that railway modelling has moved away from “actual modelling” to what can one person have with the most money. There is no longer any skill required in the railway modelling world. When myself and others say this you get shot down with “it’s too hard”, “oh im not good at that” (when they haven’t even tried)and “rule 1” being abused. I get the first two quite alot when people see some of my wagons, “are they Bachmann” “no they’re kits” “oh much to hard for me”. Have a GO! Or when people say “why can’t Hornby or Bachmann do this loco” when there is a perfectly good kit awaiting to be purchased and built from a locally sourced manufacture.

It doesn’t excite me one bit about my one arriving. Yes, I am getting one, but only the original condition W1, I have a resin kit here to finish of the rebuilt version by Graeme King. (Pictured: GK cut and shut on a Hornby A4, remind me to get the correct tender from SEF)
It sounds hypocritical but I exploit what the RTR boys have to offer and kitbuild the rest, as most of you know.

Just the thought and ramblings of an Australian!

Have I been hanging around you too much Tony?

I posted this in a Facebook group, no doubt I’ll be cursed and thrown out.

UPDATE: My post in a Facebook group was basically silenced because I went against one of the rules by talking about Rule1. Even though majority of the people agreed with me.

You're just jealous because I've got one before you...IMG_3271.jpg.466797aec397855e96fe02c207bffa62.jpg

But yes, you are right. But at the end of the day, Hornby producing a model that sells very well can only benefit all of us, giving them more money to pump back into the hobby.

Besides, I think you've still got enough kits to build ;)

I live near here, and use the old railway routes now comfortably converted to Paths by Durham County council quite frequently.

If you perform a search on Relly Mill Junction, you will find more material.

By the way there are variant spellings - Relly/Relley/Deerness/Dearness - just to confuse search engines!

It is not 'an ECML Diversion'! It was and is, since 1872, on the ECML itself.

There was a post on RMWeb - ...here...

There was an article in British Railways Illustrated for March 1996 (Vol.5 No.6) by 'MB'. Pictures are from 1955 to 1963. If you are unable to locate a copy let me know. Several of the pictures are listed as from the Neville Stead collection. I can't place my copy just at present; I was using it in my Railway Room a few months ago and it may have got buried under other projects.

Your Diagram, at the bottom left, appears to miss the junction (Bridge House) between the ECML and the Bishop Auckland line. (The latter was the original line here  by the way)

As others have said, do join NERA.

The Signal Box is probably a Northern Division type, although the border between the divisions did change several times.

Many thanks for the info, @drmditch! I presumed Deerness was a diversion because a few photos I've found of 'top links' working the area say they're diverting due to line blockage at Ferryhill. Everyday's a school day!

I've found a copy of the March 1996 issue of BR Illustrated on eBay for the pricey sum of £3 on eBay, so if you think it's worth it, I'll invest!

The track diagram is dated 10th June 1901, which might be why the Bridge House junction is missing?

Thanks for the info on the Signal Box, is it the same type as Haydon Bridge? They look fairly similar to my untrained eye!

  17. Afternoon everyone,

Some may know that I'm about to start a 15x2ft, 4mm Model Railway based on the NER (1958 BR), but I've been struggling to find a real life example that I could be influenced by. But today, I came across Deerness Valley Junction, an ECML diversion near Newcastle. Apart from a Station (which I will superimpose), it's perfect! It should fit just nicely on my 15x2ft Boards (arriving on Saturday).

Does anyone have any good reference photos or film from the area? There isn't that much online that I've found, which is surprising for how interesting the area looks. And if anyone could recommend some reference books, I'd much appreciate it ^_^

Also, can anyone identify the type of signal box?

  18. Morning everyone, apologies for not posting this yesterday, had a busy day brass banding!

Many thanks for your hospitality on Saturday, Tony. I really enjoyed myself, learnt so much my head hurts and I'm now looking forward to progressing with this 'Brittania', rather than apprehensive!

I'm in love with this NER footbridge you sold me as well for my upcoming layout (baseboards arriving on Saturday!), can I ask who's kit it is again please? I've forgotten! I've attached some crude 'mock up' photos of it, using books as platforms! I'm very proud of the Platform Shelter, it's the Prototype for one of my favourite kits I designed, based off the example found at Robin Hoods Bay.

Those photos you took of my Q6 came out well, just a shame about the limited focus points (I'm not photographer so I don't know the technical terms!) She looked really smart trundling around LB, just needs finishing off now with crew, coal, detailing parts and brake rigging!

I'll post an update on the Brit soon!
