    Good evening Dylan,

It was HYCILLA's tender which gave some trouble on the crossing (a single slip), so I'd suggest one of the wheelsets has a tight back-to-back.

Are you saying that the Bachmann V2s run poorly? Where, or what is Topley Dale?

When I had three pre-production V2s to test on Little Bytham (in 2019!), they ran superbly.

    Regards,

    Tony.

'Topley Dale' is Hornby Magazines test layout. They shared a video quite some time ago now of decorated samples running, unfortunately I can't seem to find said video (if anyone else can, I'd love to watch it again!). The video showed a number of running faults. One had a very noticeable wobble, the other slowed down and wheel slipped when pulling a medium sized RTR freight train around a corner. Not very good for a £200+ model by today's standards. Hopefully, these were teething issues that have now been stomped out...

    Thanks Dylan,

    It's rather good. Well done!

However, spot the cobweb! My fault, I should be more diligent in my cleaning beforehand.

The only think I'd change is the title. From 'Tony Wright's ECML Masterpiece' to 'Tony Wright's ECML Group Project'

What it does show is how well your Hornby HYCILLA, SUN CASTLE and KINGFISHER run. 60516's freight is no lightweight, 60523 is hauling 14 bogies (several, all-metal) and 60024's 'Elizabethan' has all-metal sides or complete metal kits in it.

    Regards,

    Tony.

Very true Tony, I'll change that next time!

I was very surprised how superbly they ran (most of the time... Hycilla didn't seem to like one of your points, I'll get the back-to-back out!) Hornby's new A2s are great models, it'll be interesting to compare the performance with the new Bachmann V2s. I've only seen a brief video of these being test ran on 'Topley Dale', but the running seems really poor!

    Sales are going very well.

    Thanks to all for ordering.

Please bear with me because there are many items to pack and post. And to check, as well.

Speaking of checking, I've found a couple of kits with instructions missing, or some pages missing. Even instructions for other kits in different boxes!

I have to say this is a bl00dy bind! I wonder why folk do this - look in kits having bought them, then muddle things up? Granted, since I never read instructions, then, were I buying, I'd not mind, but I'll do my best to sort these out. Oh, for infinite time.

Despite losing some instructions, what's very interesting is the original purchasing documentation which has survived. Dates and prices, some from the early-'80s, including an SAE back to DJH at its first address in Consett, with a 1st Class stamp; for 17p! Today's is 85p!

I found some LMS Semaphore kits in the Full Break I bought off you, let me know if you want it back to sell on or would like some more dough for it, as it's not much use on my layout, apart from for practicing before I tackle LNER semaphores!

  4. After Jesse's inspiration for wagon weathering, I thought I'd have another go. Not bad, I don't think.

Any criticism/suggestions are welcome, we all can improve that way! Although, none are ‘finished’ yet.

    Very-natural, Dylan,

    Tom Foster's work?

Exactly as I remember seeing most B1s.

Just one thing (there always is with me!), please junk those dreadful Hornby bogie wheels. When you come down here soon, I'll give you a replacement Markits set!

    Regards,

    Tony.

That's very kind of you Tony! I'll make sure to bring her.

Of course! Superb work as always.

  6. Since the thread has strayed onto Hood on the Royal Navy, I think this video will be of great interest to some. The video looks into all possible theories about how and why the mighty Hood sank, and since the author is both a Naval historian and Naval engineer, I think is very creditable. Well worth a watch IMO

When you state 'can't be soldered', why not?

    Thanks Tony,

I'm building a 51L NER 12T c10 open wagon and there's quite a number of small under frame parts that I don't feel confident enough or able to solder, especially with my accident prone fingers!

But don't worry, the main construction of the wagon has been soldered, albeit not very neat!

I'll look and see if I have any prototype shots in my collection Dylan,

Here's what I've done in model form.......................

These are Hornby/Comet conversions, undertaken by me and painted by Ian Rathbone.

The dummy buckeye is from Keen Systems, and the train-heating/vacuum brake pipes just bent brass wire. The end board is from The Famous Named Trains Company, stuck on to a piece of thin card.

The Hornby car end boards are a better shape.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Tony.

Looks the business Tony! Just what I was after. May I ask, what have you done between coaches?

  9. Morning everyone,

Bit of an odd request, but does anyone have any photos or drawings of the ends/couplings of All Steel K type pullmans? The Hornby model is excellent, but I can't help but think that they'll be greatly improved with the addition of prototypical couplings and various vacuum pipes in the correct places. They look a bit bare in that department, especially in a large rake!

    Many thanks,

    Dylan

With the class 91 electrics now being withdrawn from the ECML

From what I understand, only a few are being withdrawn, those that are still owned by LNER are being overhauled and should re-enter service late 2021 or 2022. Could be wrong though...

Very interested to know what the A4's achieved!

  11. Evening everyone,

Without wanting to trigger a debate, does anyone know why the first A2/3 was number 500, but the second was 511 ‘Airborne’, with 501 - 510 being the A2/2s and A2/1s? Wouldn't it be more logical to start the A2/2s and A2/1s at 500, then have all A2/3s numbered consecutively from 510?

Seems a hit against the theme for Thompson, since Thompson simplified the LNERs numbering system?

    Thanks Dylan,

Tony of Tony's Trains is a very helpful chap - Steady Aim delivered yesterday together with the Q6 0-8-0 that I also ordered. First class service and good prices. Thanks for the tip.

Glad to hear it! Tony is my go to model shop now. Always over the moon with his service.

Enjoy your A2/3 and Q6! Another model on my hit list!

You are too kind ! Its my DJH kit built version - my pre-order is on Hattons for Strait Deal which, incidently, Hattons billed me for and said it was "picked" only to refund the money and say sorry they were still on order!

Your weathering is truly first class!

    Kind regards,

    Richard B

PS The Hornby version of BR express loco green is very wrong and the lining is not much better - another 60501 is going to be rather grubby when I have dealt with it.

Why does that story with Hattons not surprise me!

I highly recommend Tony's Trains of Rugby. Second to none in service, and I believe he might have one in stock!
