Few more wagons in the build/paint process, from left right: 51L GCR open, GKing resin LNER meat conflat (thanks Graeme and Jonathan) and a DS GNR Horsebox.

The meat conflat is far from finished and is one of four, very eager to get one done to see how she looks.

Very nice work as always champ, but is it my eyes or is the GCR Open riding a lot lower than the other two?

    More on Bytham's lamps.........................

Another example of the over-scale Springside BR lamps.

In comparison with LMS' LNER ones.

Remember, please: these images blow the lamps up in size to Gauge 3 and more!

Springside's LNER lamps are nearer scale than their BR ones, though the handles are a bit chunky.

Hi Tony, those lamps really make the model! I love the Doncaster A1 too, a proper loco!

Have you looked at the DCC Concepts LNER loco lamps? They're slightly more expensive, but they can light up (although I think you won't want this function!) They are also 'too scale' and look the business. I have loads I need to fit to my models!

    Stay safe and happy modelling,

    Dylan.

I hope this qualifies for posting here, as its slightly more 'on theme' than my usual stuff.

I was asked to add etched plates and weather my friends A4 'Kingfisher'

I understand that the painted plates weren't added until much later, but this is how he wanted it. Also my first time seeing an A4 model in the flesh. I really enjoyed picking all the rivet detail out on the valences.

    Now that looks amazing...

You've given me some inspiration to get an LNER A4! I always though Garter Blue looked 'Toy-like' compared to Brunswick, but a properly weathered one like yours just looks the business!

    I'll try, Dylan............

    If these images are 'correct'...................

60523 can be changed into any A2/3, after they (all) received Peppercorn boilers.

60512 can be changed into any A2/3 in early BR guise, apart from 60500 (which retained its original boiler band configuration, with the cladding in four sections, until it received a Peppercorn boiler).

60505 cannot be altered to any other A2/2, because it's the only one fitted with a Thompson Dia.117 boiler (dome further forward). If I read the image correctly (with a lipped chimney), it'll only represent the loco for the last six months of its life.

60501. If this image is as it's going to be, then the vacuum ejector pipe should not be dead straight; it was cranked above the nameplate on the real thing. I can't tell if the main handrails are stopped short of the smokebox front ring (as they should be). If they are, then to make 60502 (the only other A2/2 with a beaded tender), then those handrails will have to be extended and clipped to the smokebox front. The dead straight ejector pipe is correct for 60502.

    Regards,

    Tony.

    Many thanks as always Tony!

  5. Good afternoon Tony,

I was wondering if I could pick your brains? (or anyone else's!)

I don't suppose you know which British Rail A2/2s and A2/3s one can create with just renaming/numbering Hornby's 2020 models?

Hope you and Mo are doing well and keeping busy during these weird times!

    Many thanks,

    Dylan.

    Good afternoon Dylan,

Though I haven't listen to a Sutton diesel, I'm told the sound effects are superbly-realistic.

I'm sure many of the other diesel sounds are good as well, though has anyone tried to stay sane when sitting demonstrating next to a (loud) diesel depot layout for hours on end?

However, I've yet to hear a DCC sound system which captures the true 'steam sound'. At the moment, Tom Foster is editing moving footage I took on Little Bytham last week. He'll post it on here when it's done (I await in anticipation). The only sounds to be heard are the model trains (and the occasional real one!). We both agreed that the models sounded 'natural'. Tom is going to leave on as much of that original sound as possible (by the way, Tom, are you going to show us the phone-footage you took as well? It looked and sounded excellent).

    A fast-moving, steam-hauled express, under easy steam, doesn't go 'chuff-chuff-chuff'; it's a kind of cacophony of continuous sound - a mechanical 'roar'.

We'll have to see how it all comes out.

    Regards,

    Tony.

    Good afternoon Tony!

I couldn't agree more. DCC Sound in large locos working large and fast trains as demonstrated on your layout is simply redundant. However, since my layout is a mear 12x1ft 1960s MPD based on Doncaster, I feel sound may have the potential to be better utilised, since as you'd expect, there'll be lots of low speed chuffs, puffs, whistles etc.

I'm looking forward to seeing the video Tom has filmed on LB.

    Many thanks,

    Dylan.

I've never been impressed with DCC sound in 4mm. Listening to a full 12-13 coach train clatter through Little Bytham, with the roar of the engine sounded pretty close to the real thing for me.

What has surprised me though, has been the response from some other modellers who are DCC, when I've told them I'm giving up DCC. You'd have thought I had two heads!

I know many do enjoy DCC, and have superb results. However, it's not for me....and sadly I've found out the expensive way.

    Hi Tom,

Feel free to listen to have a play with my Suttons 24 and then tell me what you think about DCC Sound!

DCC Sound is good and is getting better, but it is no where near perfect. So far the Suttons 24 is the best sound loco I've heard, and I'm yet to hear a sound kettle that sounds like a kettle, especially in Pacifics. Hopefully technology will soon allow for better speakers and sound files to allow for proper sound in steam locos.

    Hi Dylan

I hope you don’t mind me saying that a layout of just 12 inches Wide if I am correct in reading your last reply may prove a little difficult to have a four road MPD with space around it, but obviously I have not seen what design you have in mind.

Haymarket is eight roads wide and the overall dimensions of the shed building is 510mm wide.

The experience and knowledge I have acquired in building Haymarket I will be happy to help advise on suppliers if you get stuck on any materials You may need.

i will certainly look forward to see your thread once you start it.

    Regards

    David

It certainly is a tight fit!

I don't have much to show but hopefully this will show what I intend to achieve. This is one of my 6ft boards, on the other I'll have two pairs of points so locos can change roads and maybe a thunderbird siding for an A1 or an A3. The shed will be 2ft long and will hide a cassette loading system. Between the shed and point work I'll have some Ash Pits. The two centre lines are the main running lines connecting the shed to the Doncaster station. The left hand and right hand tracks will be sidings that end somewhere on the other 6ft board.

Thank you for the offer of helping with building advice! I'm a product developer for Scale Model Scenery so I'll be designing my own range of products for the layout.

    Ta muchly!

    Dylan.

    Hi Dylan

Thank you, can I take it from your reply that you are creating a fictional MPD layout?

If so a good choice in my opinion as you are free to do what you want, there is a lot of work involved in trying to recreate an actual location especially if it disappeared 50 or more years ago.

Thats why Haymarket is just an attempt to recreate an image of what the MPD might have looked like in the 1950's, say unlike Tony Wright's Little Bytham layout which is astonishingly accurate to the prototype.

Good Luck with your project and we are lucky that there are plenty of good members on this website willing to help with advice.

    Regards

    David

Aye, very much fictional! I'm limited to 12x1ft, so I'm just going for a simple 4 road MPD with a bit of point work and the odd siding. I own a fair few BR(E) locos, so an MPD was the obvious choice. The track plan takes inspiration from Doncaster, and the buildings from Haymarket. The MPD will also have a similar use to Doncaster, so will feature lots of visiting locos (just an excuse so I don't have to rename everything to locos from one shed in particular!) Hopefully once I get some good photographic progress, I'll start my own thread to document my progress.

Beautiful work as always David, I'm really enjoying following your thread and it's providing me with lots of inspiration for my layout, which takes inspiration from both Haymarket and Doncaster shed!

    Keep up the good work,

    Good Morning

My latest little project on Haymarket is RTR Hornby B1 61243 Sir Harold Mitchell a Scottish based member of the class, I have had this model since it was first introduced and finally got around to detailing and weathering it.

All thats required now is a crew and fire irons to be fitted.

This close up photo also shows my amendments to the standard Peco 00 scale turntable.

    Regards

That's a gorgeous B1 David, have you added extra plumbing to the right hand side of the Boiler? Really looks the part!
