  1. I think this maybe an optical illusion. The righthand wheel is actually on the switch rail, the left hand wheel is in between the stock and switch rail.In a case like this I would first check the back to back on the wheels.Dapol seem to leave a lot to be desired where this is concerned,I have a lot had a lot of issues with derailing Dapol stock, and was advised by Peco's Technical Department to check the B2B before anything else, having had similar problems. Most wheel sets needed adjustment.

Well, what else have I been spending all my money on? A Bachmann On30 4-6-0, Bachmann On30 Consolidations (2x), a couple more "collectable" On30 Moguls, Atlas 0-6-0 Plymouth Switchers (4x) and a few more Ixion Hudswell Clarke locos (how did I end up owning six of those?)

I am well stocked up on project items for a couple of years - next big purchase is a good airbrushing rig because I have resolved to finally paint all those models I've been building over the last 20 years and where applicable, I will be glazing and decaling them too!

I see that a lot of modellers only get "serious" in their late 30s when life settles down enough and there is a bit of disposable income again. In my late teens and early 20s I had all the time in the world, and no money. Now I have a bit of money to spend on trains, I seem to have hardly any time.

Ah,yes. What is known as Sod's(or Murphy's) Law.Or as Parkinson put it,"Work expands to fill all available time."Or was it"Life's a bitch and then you die."

    Take your pick.

  3. I used to load Fish Meal from Hull Fish Docks.I used to keep an old coat to wear while handling the bags(and gloves), when not in use, they lived in a locker attatched to the rear of the truck. When damp the meal would stick like glue, and the smell could be,shall we say, intense!

Progress so far lengthening the deck.

I recently acquired a rather nice vintage wagon, it was fitted with these, which I do not have any use for.

Free to a good home, indeed any kind of home!  please pm me if you would like them  - yours for the cost of the postage - btw they are not insulated for 2R !

Hi Simond, presume you are talking about the wheels?

Welp. The MSC models 40:1 box looks perfect, BUT you have to order by post? What the hell? "Print off the order form and post it to us."

ABC wants 90 pounds for a gearbox and pay by cash or "cheque".

    Guess this project is done.

Here's my motor and gearbox running outside the loco, with the axle installed:

Hi Amanda,to my (slightly less than) eagle eye,it does look as if there is a very very slight wobble in the worm gear.I had to watch several times to detect it,though and it could be side to side play(end float)

Next to the pump house there was a small fenced enclosure. It has an  open entrance way facing the track. I am not certain what it was used for? Clearly there is something piled up inside it. Maybe ash from the locos given it is situated near the engine shed? There is no mention of it in the book about the line.

So I have been using the model makers friend, the good old coffee stirring sticks to make it.

Like the pump house, just plonked in place at the moment. Got to make the corner posts etc.

Hi Ade,trackwork on the first photo seems to be a mix of chairs and spikes,on what looks suspiciously like FB rail.I know there were several cost saving exercises during war time, but not heard of this.

What type of pannier was your footplate experience? I'm wondering how common these raised areas were on GWR tank types as the 45xx had them as well. Rarely modelled, I couldn't work out why the visible crew in photos seemed too high to be stood on the floor so I went and had a look at 5572 at Didcot.

(although in typing that, now occurs to me it might only have been on those with the later raised tanks!)

Hi,it was 7752,at Shackerstone.I have read somewhere (quite recently, too) that the crew couldn't see out of the front spectacle plate if they stood on the flat part of the floor,so part of it was raised up.This was in a book by a former steam fireman, can't think of the title off the top of my head. Was on the 2 - 8 - 0 T at Paignton once, that had a flat floor.Quite a roomy cab IIRC.

Thank you! I copied a 57xx, I think, and my gauges are in different locations =( I will add the lubricator and associated pipework and valves to the loco, and the injector water valves. It should come out quite ok! Are the wooden risers depicted along the bottom the floor, or storage boxes, or?

The wooden bits are the cab flooring. On a pannier the boxed area,is over the rear wheels,I think, and the raised pieces are the so you can see out. There is a lowered piece between the wheels.Well on the pannier I had a footplate experience on did.

Today I had some spare time, so I decided to do something about the rather featureless white metal backhead casting. I added regulator lever and firebox door gubbins, pipes and gauges, and even a brake handle. Can anyone else thing of anything obvious I should add to it?

I am going to work on the handbrake standard and handle next; once again the kit casting is so-so at best.

Actually, pinching your photo, the two controls on the outside under your (?) forefinger.

Steam heat could be the pipe that runs left over the top of the back head, then down the left hand side.Am searching for a labelled diagram of a GW backhead, got one some where.Bear with me on this one, soon as I track it down, will scan and send to you.Hopefully by tomorrow.
