Hi Amanda, I suspect in this case, the grab rails have flat plates with rounded ends and drilled to take the screws to fasten them to the coach sides, not knobs. There is a similar suburban at Chasewater, I'll have a look next time I'm over there, probably a week Sunday, but that might be too long a wait for you, going by your progress!

I doubt you would get any explosive gases from burning meths, probably some carbon monoxide, which is heavier than air and in a sealed box would ,I guess' put out the fire,(if a lack of oxygen didn't do it first),and a load of water vapour.
Maybe an open topped box with the floor at rail level, and a removable end, raise steam in the box, push the loco out onto the track via the removable end, remove box then add tender and train and off you go.

The two threads to the right hand end look a bit closer together than the others, and the top part seems closer together than the bottom part.In fact there seems to be a definite bend in it,forth thread from left.Perhaps another run down with a die or die nut would cure it?
Don't want to appear negative, but we don't need accidents with boiling water either.
Cheers

Hi Douglas.I think the question you have to ask yourself is," do I want (1)a proper running loco or (2)a shelf ornament?"
If (1)
Go ahead and do the repairs,
If (2)
Put it on the shelf and admire it.
I don't know what the boiler bush is for,but maybe drill out ,use a larger tap and larger fitting.May not ruin too much paint.
Hope this helps

I quite liked the original "dents",I'm sure you could have come up with a story about a "heavy shunt" to cover them. It's turning out to be a splendid loco.and I look forward to seeing it running.

Just wondering, maybe there was a ring fastened to the base, or to the ground, to anchor the hook to. This would prevent the hook from swaying in the wind, and the local kiddies from using it as a "Tarzan" swing. Remember them?
