  1. Today, I'm rearranging travel as the railway company has emailed me to confirm that I'm affected by the strikes.
  2. Hard to beat BBC Weather for restraint.
  3. Printed out full size to see how it feels and immediately spotted that I have a point over a baseboard joint. *sigh*
  4. As I'm about to start my build journey, I've started reading this thread from the beginning. Incredibly inspiring.
  5. Brackets sourced and fitted. This is a dual-use room as it's also my office (I'm self-employed and work full time from here), with Melcombe Road Sidings sitting neatly under Holcombe.
  6. Night out with a mate last night, so nursing a headache today… Hoping to complete baseboards today.
  7. Decided on latches. The baseboards are 1.2m above the floor (~4ft) and I wasn't confident that I could lift one up straight up comfortably with detachable hinges. The obvious downside is latches on the top, so will need to hide. It's a compromise that I'll live with. Next up, I need to sort out brackets for the wall to hold up the other side of the "L".
  8. Morning folks. it's -4ºC, so I'm in no hurry to go outside! Another day with an interview-type call today, so hopefully will see movement on work-stuff next week.
  9. I've been reading threads on here about joining baseboards, such as this one and this one, I have realised that I have another problem (or do I mean opportunity?!). I have 20mm space between the back of the baseboards and the wall. If I use dowels and toggle catches, then the catches at the back will need to be on the top of the baseboard and presumably I'll cover with buildings. Another idea I had was to forget dowels and use detachable hinges along these lines: I'm not sure that two of these will hold everything tight enough though.
  10. Baseboards painted! As you can see, I intend for the two main boards to rest on cabinets. The next thing to work out is how to fasten them together so that I can easily separate them to work underneath any given board. If there was room for me to get my hands underneath, I could simply use a bolt and wing nut, but that's not an option here. I'm currently thinking of metal alignment dowels in the end, such as these from Railwayscenics. with some sort of clasp on each side. I can then undo the clasps and pull the board outwards and remove. Does this sound plausible? Is there a better way?
  11. In other news, the camera is very cruel! Next time I'll embed the buildings into the floor and be much more careful when assembling!
  12. Inspired by @KNP's excellent photo of 9319 with the background in in focus on Little Muddle, I decided that I really should learn how to do these types of shots. My Fujifilm X-H2 has a focus bracketing feature, so I googled how to use it and created 60 images all with slightly different focus points from front to back. I'm glad that the camera can do this automatically. I already own Affinity Photo, and via more googling, I discovered that it has a "Focus Merge" menu item. I clicked it, added the 60 photos and pressed OK. After some whirring and clicking, it produced this image of 7412 at Melcombe Road. Quite happy with this and now I know how to do it!
  13. For both Wells and Bridgwater the loop is outside the platform. This gets tricky in space available (~8ft long including curve x 17 inches wide). I'll have another look though as at this point, I'm not committed to a particular plan.
  14. I’ve just caught up with your thread. I’m impressed!
  15. Thanks to the wonderful RMweb Mods for moving my thread. Now that I'm starting the build, I think it makes more sense for Holcombe to be in Layout topics.
  16. Morning all. Took advantage of the sunshine to prime baseboards in the garage, even though it's 3°C.
  17. Slow going, but have primed the baseboards now! I want the sides to be white to match the rest of the room, but it would makes sense to paint the top a dark brown or similar colour.
  18. Shocked that it's Friday already. On the plus side, I have made some moves this week that might lead to more work.
  19. This thread showcased his fantastic modelling. My condolences to his family and friends.
  20. Same here. Unfortunately, I don't have the space to have two separate desks, so I put away and get out again as required.
  21. Unexpected £1500 repair bill to get my car through its MOT will curtail spending on Holcombe's infrastructure. New plan for this month is to get the baseboards painted and determine a way to fix them together such that I can remove a board easily as they are sitting on a cupboard.
  22. The whole speaking loudly and slowly to perceived older people irritates me. My dad had a stroke which has affected his ability to speak, not his ability to hear or understand. However people in his life who should know better talk to him as if he's lost all his faculties and use a really loud voice with him. It's disrespectful.
  23. I enjoyed a bit of modelling yesterday building the Finetrax point. Today I've been taking decorations down and tidying up ready for the working week starting tomorrow. A couple of days ago, it dawned on me that I could do with a test track, so I might have a go at putting some track on some wood, solely for running in locos and other testing type activities.
