    I did a search of this topic and I couldn't find any previous mention of these very Germanic looking Vulcan built locos.

    Apparently, 22 were ordered under a Turkish-British trade agreement of 11 April 1939 but not delivered until 1948 (some unpleasantness started in September 1939!). I understand there were also 15 more from Beyer-Peacock in the same time frame.

    I believe there were also some (50?) 2-8-2s ordered (and delivered) too, these were also very Germanic looking.

    There were 166 2-10-0s delivered to the TCDD of this particular design. As mentioned above, 22 from VF and 15 from BP, the remainder coming from German and Czech builders.  Two more were built by the TCDD's own workshops in 1961.

     

    There were only 11 2-8-2s delivered of the above design - all from Henschel in 1937.

    The rule-onners, and casual modellers might not mind too much, and it'd be good for the FfR shop to be able to sell a model of the locos as a souvenir of a trip, albeit a rather expensive one! Those of us who are planning on, or actually modelling some of the FfR/WHR would most probably want them to be mostly (a few tweaks to bring a loco to a more specific era are acceptable) right.

     

    Looking forward to seeing how this develops, but for now, I'll be waiting to see what is actually being produced before committing.

    D6122 had windscreen wipers at the bottom and (D6122- onwards) no cab vents, unlike D6100-21.

    Post 1964 D6122 was rebuilt as a 29, and D6121 became stuff of legend in Barry with both numbers showing through.

     

    So which loco was parked out the back of Hither Green shed circa 1967/1968 ?

    Given that I have few solid memories of steam "in the wild", and most of those relate to Waterloo and the services from there, these are real nostalgia-starters for me.

    The Standard 4 tanks were originally allocated to all regions of British Railways, except the Western. They became particularly associated with the London, Tilbury and Southend Line (LT&S) working commuter services out of London until that route was electrified in 1962.

    They were also widely used in East Sussex and Kent working from Brighton, Tunbridge Wells and Three Bridges on those lines of the former London Brighton and South Coast Railway that were not electrified. Another group worked from Polmadie depot in the Scottish region on the Glasgow commuter services. Note that from July 1962, a batch displaced by electrification of the LT&S was transferred to the Western Region’s Swansea (East Dock) and Shrewsbury districts, as well as other regions.

  9. The fully automated (driverless) Sydney Metro North West opened a couple of weeks ago - I managed a quick ride on it last week......

     

    Sydney saw the opening of the A$ 8.3bn Sydney Metro North West rail link between Tallawong and Chatswood on 26 May, with around 140,000 people experiencing free travel for the day on the new service. Much of the newly constructed 23km rail line between Tallawong and Epping is underground with 15.5km in twin tunnels between Bella Vista and Epping, and 4.4km on a continuous elevated viaduct between Kellyville and Rouse Hill.  At Epping the new line has been extended to include the former Sydney Trains 13km Epping to Chatswood rail line which has been converted for driverless metro operations.  This is the first automated passenger operation in Australia to use driverless trains, and the thirteen stations on the line are also the first in Australia to be equipped with platform screen doors.

    Great shot Pete, but I wish you wouldn't do that :P

     

    I've been trying to resist ordering the N scale version of these and to wait patiently until the Cemflos come out in N. I think my patience is starting to wear thin.

  13. If they were to do a 25/3, it would be good if they put some effort into getting the underframe area right. This is quite a distinctive feature of these locos. Their current 25 has what must be the most inaccurate underframe of any curent N gauge mainline diesel. A real shame as the bogies are actually quite nice.

     

    I saw just about every 25/3 in the flesh.

     

    Funnily enough though I can't tell whether the current 25 class underframe is accurate or inaccurate.

     

    There are more important things in life.

  14. On the JiTong Railway in China it was somewhat ironic that some of the diesels were of the same vintage, if not older, as the steam locomotives they were replacing. On Saturday 26 February 2005, DF4 6007 heads back to the shed at Daban.

    In September 1978 on the West Sumatran rack railway at Padang Panjang is 0-10-0T E1007 built by Swiss manufacturer SLM in 1922. While beautifully posed and in steam for the duration of our 5-day visit, unfortunately it hardly turned a wheel during that time.

    On 12 September 1978 on the former Deli Railway in North Sumatra, 75-year old 0-4-4T no.27 was photographed at Tanjungbalai. Built by Hohenzollern in 1903, it is in steam having just brought in a freight off the 4km branch from the port area at Teluk Nibung.

    Is that Allen straight link valve gear?

On a general note - I think its good that people are starting to look at the cost of things, instead of just saying, I will have "X" and "Y".  It should be food for thought, for all manufacturers/suppliers that price is getting an ever important consideration for modellers, and each product needs to be compete, within the market place, not just be made up of what they think they can get away with selling it for, because its an "exclusive".  Nothing lasts forever.........
