On This Day in History –Manchester/Bury/Crewe 28th November 1970 (Saturday) In 1970 the class 83 and 84 electric locomotives were all taken out of traffic pending an upgrade to there electrical control equipment. Most were stored at Bury and on this November day in 1970 I ventured north from Nottingham to Bury to track down these stored locomotives. Nottingham – Bury: Class 08 (3029/34/37, 3404, 3769/71/73/84, 3860), class 20 (8008/12, 8101/41/92), class 25 (5270/74, 7585), class 31 (5655), class 37 (6718, 6809), class 40 (213, 385), class 44 (2), class 45 (26/75, 108), class 47 (1783/85, 1828, 1900), class 86 (E3158). In store at Bury were: Class 76 (E26000), class 83 (E3024/25/26/27/28/29/30/31/32/35/98/99), class 84 (E3036/37/39/40/41/44/45). This equated to twelve out of fifteen class 83 locomotives and seven out of ten class 84 locomotives. Also present was E26000, the original class 76 dating from 1941 which would be broken up at Crewe in October 1972 Following on from Bury I paid a visit to Reddish MPD: Class 25 (5153, 7548/94), class 40 (226), class 76 (E26002/09/10/17/24/35/40/42/46/56). My journey back from Manchester to Nottingham was via Crewe and produced the following: Class 03 (2386/98), class 08 (3032/33, 3105, 3279, 3585, 3984, 4035, 4143), class 24 (5008/89), class 25 (5203), class 37 (6964), class 40 (274/89/98), class 45 (45), class 46 (141/54), class 47 (1628, 1947), class 50 (405/13/34), class 81 (E3012/20/21/96), class 85 (E3074/81/86), class 86 (E3105/14/16/28/30/32/40/45/48/57/63/68/78/86/89/91). On the journey back to Nottingham I made a visit to Crewe MPD: Class 08 (3801), class 24 (5007/22/32/38/41/60/79, 5142), class 40 (211/29/32/33/43/67, 320/44), class 47 (1540, 1615/18/23/89, 1708/15/45/55, 1808/34, 1943/45/58/60/63), class 50 (406/07/14/15/21/24/26/29/30/31/33/38/43/47/48). Of note are the fifteen class 50’s on Crewe MPD representing 30% of the class. In this collection are a number of images of locomotives seen that day later in there careers. A4, 4-6-2 Pacific’s 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley and 60010 Dominion of Canada were being prepared for preservation with 60026 Miles Beevor being used for spares. 9F, 2-10-0 92220 Evening Star was also being prepared for preservation. The works were in the process of completing the construction of its last order for class 47 locomotives (D1106 – 1111). The class 71 dc electric locomotives had just commenced the process of re-building into class 74 electro-diesels.   11. On This Day in History – Sheffield/Manchester 31st October 1969. On this day forty six years ago I ventured from Nottingham to Manchester. However the route I took was not via the Hope Valley but via Woodhead. In 1969 there was still a passenger service from Sheffield Victoria to Manchester Piccadilly. The first part of the journey was by class 114 DMU (E56049) from Nottingham to Sheffield Midland. After a walk to Sheffield Victoria the second part was behind class 76 electric (E26056 Triton). The following were observed on the journey: Class 04 (2218), class 08 (3025/39/44, 3336/45, 3405, 3696, 3700/65/68/79, 3997), class 20 (8006/10/35/67/75, 8139/40/56/61/69/70/71/83/85/86/94/96), class 25 (5280, 7508), class 31 (5542/54, 5849), class 37 (6707, 6803/05), class 40 (236/69/91), class 45 (28, 103/16), class 46 (157/61/87), class 47 (1522/41, 1825), class 76 (E26002/13/15/16/20/29/31/34/37/45/47/49/52/54/55/56). At Manchester a trip out to Reddish (by class 104 M50532 and return by M50536) followed: Class 08 (3694, 3766, 3988, 4145), class 25 (5248), class 37 (6806), class 40 (232/95, 374/78), class 45 (54), class 76 (E26000/50), class 81 (E3010/11), class 85 (E3075), class 86 (E3165/80). Reddish MPD: Class 25 (5273, 7640), class 40 (241, 300), class 47 (1962), class 76 (E26002/07/10/11/17/21/23/32/49/53). The run back to Nottingham was by the Harwich Boat Train from Manchester to Sheffield Victoria behind class 37 (6806), Sheffield Midland to Derby behind class 46 (151) and Derby to Nottingham by class 104 DMU (50502): Class 04 (2253), class 08 (3071, 3784), class 24 (5036), class 25 (5292, 7505/11/19/46), class 37 (6719), class 40 (204/21), class 45 (23/40, 120), class 46 (151/59/76/81), class 47 (1575, 1614, 1853), class 76 (E26009/15/18/31), class 85 (E3062). Items of note are the original class 76 locomotive E26000 Tommy which was built by the LNER in 1941 which as I saw it at Manchester Piccadilly was probably on passenger duties that day. E26000 would be withdrawn within six months in March 1970 along with E26017 seen at Reddish. Class 04 2218 which had been withdrawn in August 1968 (allocated to Crewe) and was broken up in January 1970 by a Chesterfield scrap merchant and so was probably seen in the scrap yard as we past. Class 04 2253 which had been withdrawn in March 1969 (allocated to Allerton) and was broken up in December 1969 by G Cohen at Kettering so was probably seen staged at Derby on its last journey. Finally twenty eight of the fifty eight class 76 locomotives were seen in the day. It must have been a bit of an “Indian Summer” weather wise that week as for three consecutive days I am on my push bike to Lenton South Junction watching the trains go bye, this is what I observed on the 29th October 1969. Class 20 (8001/08/13/17/34/37/60, 8114/37/41/67/68/69/76/81/85/99), class 25 (5239, 7504, 7652/58), class 31 (5546, 5809), class 44 (4), class 45 (24/32/37/38/46/51/52/62, 107), class 46 (147), class 47 (1556, 1806/49, 1945/83), DMU (50652+59252+50709, , 50656+59258+50704, 50677+?????+50730, 51928+52042) Of note is the class 108 power twin diesel multiple unit (51928+52042), one of a batch of twenty nine class 108 power twin sets built at Derby in 1960 for London Midland duties in the North West and allocated to Chester. I suspect it had been a last minute replacement at Crewe for an Etches Park set on a Nottingham – Derby - Crewe diagram. Also of note is the dominance of the class 20 on the substantial colliery traffic, the rapid loading bunkers and MGR wagons were still a number of years away from most of the Nottinghamshire collieries at this point in time and the dominance of the Peaks on the express passenger traffic. In those days the St Pancras – Sheffield service use to alternate via Derby or Nottingham and of course via Nottingham required a change of engine, thus increasing the number of Peaks to see. On this Day in History - A day excursion Nottingham to Swansea 16th September 1972 A day out from Nottingham to Swansea on 1Z16, which left Nottingham heading for Shrewesbury behind class 47 1857 (47207). This was changed to class 37 6887 (37187) for the run over the Central Wales line. The return home was via Cardiff and I do not seem to have recorded the engine for this part of the journey. During the day I recorded a grand total of one hundred and thirty two locomotives from fifteen different classes as follows: Class 03, six (2087, 2142/44/45, 2382/87) Class 08, twenty six (3025/50, 3175, 3422, 3569/70/77, 3747/49/53/58/79, 3822/24/27/41, 3933/79/80, 4021/24, 4127/28/72/74/75) Class 20, six (8039/50, 8155/60/79/83) Class 23, one (5901) Class 24, three (5021, 5133/42) Class 25, eleven (5226, 7513/14/19/37/49/69/75, 7615/24/76) Class 35, two (7084, 7100) Class 37, twenty seven (6602/03/04/07, 6876/77/78/79/80/82/87/92, 6906/17/33/41/56/73/77/79/83/87/88/92/94/95/99) Class 40, one (222) Class 45, eight (24/29/31/70/89/90/91, 117) Class 46, two (149/77) Class 47, thirty three (1583/86/92/95, 1612/45/47/52/55/63/64/65/69/77/80/88/91/94, 1739, 1841/49/57, 1903/10/12/13/16/17/24/28/34/55/82) Class 52, one (1062) Class 85, one (E3062) Class 86, four (E3113/19/45/69). Class 11 shunters 12062/89/91, all withdrawn (April 1970, August 1970 and June 1970 respectively) and all broken up at Derby works in December 1971. Class 17, 8521 withdrawn in October 1968 and used by BR Research at Derby as a mobile Generator, broken up in October 1978 Class 24, 5088 withdrawn following fire damage sustained between Chester & Crewe sometime in May 1971 and following component recovery at Derby works broken up by George Cohen, Kettering in January 1972. Inverness allocated class 24, 5119 a rare visitor to Derby works for repair. The ill fated class 25, 7605, which would be destroyed in just over a years time (December 1972) when in a head on collision with two class 20’s just “down the road” at Lenton South Junction. Class 52, 1061 Western Envoy a surprise visitor to Derby on a service train from the south west (if my memory is correct) which was replaced by a peak and departed light engine back home.
