  1. Class 20 classified repair cycles were in practice considerably longer than most of the main line diesel classes and was one of the reasons why so many remained in green for so long. You never did see that many on visits to Crewe, Derby or Glasgow in the 1970's. This changed somewhat in the early 1980's when they started to be fitted with train air brakes and SSC in earnest.

  3. On this Day in History - Half Term – Lenton South Junction 29th October 1969 (Wednesday) Its half term week and I am off school fifty one years ago. It must have been a bit of an “Indian Summer” weather wise that week as for three consecutive days I am on my push bike to Lenton South Junction for a bit of spotting, this is what I observed on the 29th October 1969. Class 20 (8001/08/13/17/34/37/60, 8114/37/41/67/68/69/76/81/85/99), class 25 (5239, 7504, 7652/58), class 31 (5546, 5809), class 44 (4), class 45 (24/32/37/38/46/51/52/62, 107), class 46 (147), class 47 (1556, 1806/49, 1945/83), DMU (50652+59252+50709, 50656+59258+50704, 50677+?????+50730, 51928+52042) Of note is the class 108 power twin diesel multiple unit (51928+52042), one of a batch of twenty nine class 108 power twin sets built at Derby in 1960 for London Midland duties in the North West and allocated to Chester. I suspect it had been a last minute replacement at Crewe for an Etches Park set on a Nottingham – Derby - Crewe diagram. Also of note is the dominance of the class 20 on the substantial colliery traffic, the rapid loading bunkers and MGR wagons were still a number of years away from most of the Nottinghamshire collieries at this point in time and the dominance of the Peaks on the express passenger traffic. In those days the St Pancras – Sheffield service use to alternate via Derby or Nottingham and of course via Nottingham required a change of engine, thus increasing the number of Peaks to see. I photographed a number of these engines above in later life and they can be seen in this collection. 8001 (20001) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5605547510/ 8112 (20112) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5795254539/ 8137 (20137) – https://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/14948348140/ 8141 (20141) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5601651074/ 8154 (20154) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/7964380662/ 8167 (20167) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/7601637858/ 8169 (20169) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/8058561725/ 8187 (20187) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/8755971913/ 5239 (25089) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5938748587/ 7652 (25302) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5530667574/ 7658 (25308) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5668751864/ 5546 (31128) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5555315582/ 4 (44004) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5528690458/ 24 (45027) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5596404354/ 32 (45126) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/9196103043/ 37 (45009) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/7744662262/ 38 (45032) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5900029104/ 46 (45037) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5932034917/ 51 (45102) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5593255978/ 52 (45123) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/7968616492/ 62 (45143) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/6850190321/ 107 (45120) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5900025382/ 147 (46010) – http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/9257911511/ 1849 (47199) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/8466516293/ M50652 - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5661683419/ M50730 - http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5605217131/

  19. I was very fortunate in the late 1960's and early 70's that I had a friend who worked in the control office in Nottingham. He was always able to get the train timing details and therefore the destination for the East Midlands Mystex's a few days beforehand and I could then decide if it had sufficient rail interest to warrant pocket money expenditure. I did play the game and did not let on to the rest of the train passengers I knew where we were going.
  20. In the attached photo the 7th wagon (a 21 ton coal hopper) appears to be "painted" white. I do not remember white coal wagons. Anyone know the background to this or is just a "one off" where someone has made some grey go further by adding some white. https://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/18786313792/

  22. Whilst not stickley Western Region the most unusual off region service move I ever witnessed in the 1970's was on the 4th April 1978 when 33009 left Fawley with a train of empty oil tankers bound for Colwick, a few miles to the east of Nottingham. Class 33’s were common in the mid 1970’s on Fawley – Bromford Bridge (Birmingham) oil trains and one would have expected that 33009 would have been replaced en-route at Washwood Heath by a London Midland Region engine from Saltley. For some reason 33009 was not replaced and sufficient train crew with the relevant traction knowledge and route knowledge were made available for 33009 to continue all the way through to Colwick. On arrival at Colwick it was immediately dispatched light engine back to Birmingham and it is seen here heading west past Nottingham Wilford Road Goods yard. On arrival back in Birmingham it returned to the Southern Region on the 17:21 service from Birmingham New Street to Poole. https://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/24302437830/
