  1. The people riding on the top of the wagons don't look too safe either!
  2. Sorry, it is probably my incorrect terminology! I think that the milk train was immediately behind the passenger engine, and in front of its coaches. I haven't been able to find the photograph again to confirm. Thanks.
  3. I seem to remember seeing a photo somewhere with a caption that suggested the whole milk train, including the engine, hooked up behind the passenger loco and they all went off to Carmarthen together. Is that a likely scenario?
  4. So I see from the timetable you mention that the 05.10 from Carmarthen Junction to Lampeter returns from Lampeter to Carmarthen Junction as the 09.15. Is it likely that it would be the same engine (and crew?) working this each day? Would it also be the same locomotive (although presumably a different crew, given your comments about the working hours?) taking the 12.15 Carmarthen Junction to Lampeter, returning as the 5pm Lampeter to Carmarthen Junction? Thanks.
  5. It all sounds very complicated! I can't imagine people would want to change the timetable very often!
  6. Thanks for this - it is really interesting to know how it was done. What would be the normal time allowed for servicing a steam locomotive for a return journey, or would it depend on the type of engine, length of journey etc? Would the same engines tend to be allocated to the same route, or would an engine arriving from Carmarthen at Aberystwyth then be diagrammed for (eg) Shrewsbury?
  7. So the 74XX tank engine would also be used on passenger services? Would it be likely that a train to 168 tons would run part of the way, and then part dropped off for the rest of the journey? Thanks.
  8. What is the significance of 'Class 6 lamps' please? And how does the taking of the token relate to the earlier comment that there was no token exchange equipment at Lampeter? (Is it because there is no equipment that the signalman is doing it manually?). Thanks.
  9. So would that have been operated by the locomotive crew, or by the station staff? Would there be a 'standard' position, that had to be re-set after use, or would it have been left as changed until the next occasion it needed altering? Would it have been linked to a signal? Thanks.
  10. Yes, I did wonder about that, but not knowing how things would have worked, thought I might have missed something. Thanks.
  11. Thanks very much for this - it helps to have it all set out, even if it doesn't answer all the questions! Now all I need is a week's worth of similar diagrams, and I could operate to my heart's content!
  12. So a permanent on-hand repairman for the signalling? Were signal repairs required that frequently then? What sort of building or office would he have had?
  13. Is the Signal Dept Lineman different from the person operating the signal box? What are re-railing ramps on a full-size railway? Thanks for the information about the timetables.
  14. I assume he would have a hut in the yard, rather than any accommodation in the goods shed or station?
  15. So the fertiliser would come in vans, in sacks or loose?
  16. OK - so that answers the question about the date of the crane - 1963 (at least). Would the hoppers with the crane suggest a ballast train?
  17. That is a further difficulty! I would ideally like private owner wagons, but I haven't been able to find many photographs of Lampeter in that era, and I am not sure whether that timescale fits in with the Aberayron branch, which would provide extra traffic. Most of the photos I have seen are late 50s or early 60s, but I don't have a timetable for that period. I would need to rely heavily on readily available models, as I am not terribly practical at building stuff, so all in all, it is a bit of a puzzle!
  18. That is great - thanks. Is the back of the train one long vehicle or three short ones?
  19. This is fascinating stuff, but a bit daunting trying to piece it all together to produce a realistic schedule! I assume that any particular train in the timetable could be a different number of vehicles every day? And that it wouldn't really be possible to recreate an actual historical train, and the movements it made in the yard (apart possibly from photos, but it is difficult to see a whole train in many of those)
  20. Would any changes to the layout have needed some sort of planning permission?
  21. Happy to hear more! Would it be true to say that goods smalls would tend to be carried in vans and mileage traffic in open wagons, or would it depend on the load being carried? Thanks
  22. Thank you - very informative. Are they available in model form? Thanks
  23. Thank you. This is very helpful. As someone with a marked lack of imagination, and a tendency to the literal, I would find it difficult to come up with a reason for wagons staying or moving other than my whim. Is there documentation of actual moves or some way of generating realistic moves? Thanks
  24. Thank you. Useful information about the use of the goods shed and spacing of sidings. I have seen photos of a wagon-based crane at the end of a siding at Lampeter - is that likely to have been based there for use in the yard, or was it just there on the occasion of the photo? Even when you have the evidence, it is difficult to make sense of it sometimes!
  25. Is an FPL something physical that you could see if you looked at the point, or is it something mechanical in the signal box that affects the operation of the point lever?
