If anyone visits the Llangollen Railway up here in North Wales leave some 'stop over time' at Carrog and a short walk over the river Dee to The Grouse Inn is well worth it. JW Lees bitter which is not a bad pint but the food is excellent plus a fantastic river side setting is worth a few browny points from the railway widow if she is accompanying you. The town of Llangollen has some good watering holes too as well as real ale trains run by the railway itself. '' Steam and Beer '' wonderful

Visited today (Sunday) and was well impressed with this real gem of a model shop back to how it used to be in the old Arts & Crafts tradition, and open on a Sunday !!!!! Plenty of 'Red Hornby Boxes' .....well done Paul been a long time since I've seen such a plentiful range ...... and loads of Blue boxes too !!!! A good selection of up today books is available as well a loads of bits and pieces for all ones modelling needs. The Shop was quite busy too for a Sunday as certainly its easy to park in Chester on this day of the week compared to other days. I really hope that the local modellers support this new shop as one can see that a lot of hard work and financial risk has gone it this venture Best of luck to you all

Did wonder if the ELR were looking to rescue these wheel set as they appear to in a fair condition

Was at Binbrook yesterday collecting a load in my wagon. Just by chance I noted a set of locomotive driving wheels just sitting in an open yard area near to where I was loading. I walked across to inspect them and the loco number stamped on the centre of one of the wheels was 42859 the wheels have been treated to a coat of black paint as well as having been well greased and marked up as to the position of the wheels as there were on the loco LF LM LR etc. No sign of any other bits of the crab anywhere to be seen .... Lots of bits of aircraft around (Sea Harrier alongside Hanger 3) and was told that there area still some Lightning airframes in some over-grown areas by the old runway. Very interesting place almost in a time warp !!!!!

Really enjoyed reading through this thread , fascinating as I regularly drive my wagon over the motorway bridge and have often wondered what the yard was called. Just as further information to my somewhat sketchy knowledge of the area , where in relation to Tyne Yard is Tyne Dock ??? My journey to the north East takes my to Ashington north of Newcastle where there seem to be all sorts of freight lines going in different directions , what were there purposes ????

Good to see the birth of what will I'm sure be a an excellent layout based on a very interesting railway line many parts that are still in existence to this day. May I ask as to why you have gone for marine ply for the construction and not Birch ply which I have found to be a much better produce. I look forward to seeing the based board construction in the future

I presume that the archives would have been at the main office building in Northwich in which case if one could find who was the services manager at the time of closure you might be able to find out what happened to them .The ICI old lags network is well know for keeping in touch with each other. I will have a word the a friend of mine who is involved with the Runcorn Histrocial group and see if he knows what might of happened to the records as I know achives like that very often get offered to societies like that just to get rid of them.

The shots of the old loco shed on the cowlyn Bay miniature railways really does bring back some very happy memories for me. there was a funfair on the town side of the railway too where many a happy times were spent.

I would agree that the 'sticky up things' are a form of piling as they are too deep to be drains. When I conducted a track and drainage survey along this line back in 2005/6 the drains were either side of the tracks and there were outlets via the sea wall side. I did wonder if during the storm as to whether water had swelled up through the wall via these drainage outlets and had started to dislodge the track formation as there are several of the drainage pipes scattered on top of the track formation in earlier photo's. . From the photos of the damage to the upper part of the sea wall the high tide and tidal surge has obviously hit the sea defences well above the normal height.

I really don't think he has anything to worry about that sort of money is just not going to be spent on a rail link to a remote part of the country which doesn't serve the south eastern money belt. where voters can be impressed

I have a video of the track being lifted, includes last train all be brake vans on a survey train by the demolition gang prior to starting work. I think it one of the Marsdons tiles Will have a look this week if I get time and come back with the answer.

Will have to 'pop 'down and have a look , mind you living in N Wales one doesn't just 'pop 'anywhere its always an excursion. Living at Carrog this could be one of the nearer model shops for me although perhaps Dapols shop is easier to get to at Chirk. Be good to meet some of the local modellers in the N Wales around as I have only lived here since January 2013, perhaps find out if there are any groups that meet up

The ones moved to Croes Newydd would have been to haul the trains up to Brymbo Steel works and those at Birkenhead would have been used on the Bidston to Shotton ore Trains. I can remember seeing one working the Dee Marsh line passed Chester Northgate triangle heading towards Manchester / Northwich. Always remember it as a youngster being confused by the smoke coming from the side of the boiler . strange how things like that stick in ones mind. !!!
