  1. Thats fantastic Ben thanks so much - and that site you recommend is wonderful and a great help. Would I be correct in thinking that for a given operator, you could mix flats within a train formation? That seems to be the case in some photos I have seen, but I may be wrong?

I've ordered PFAs from Revolution - I'm guessing now that I ordered the wrong ones for present day operations and that I should have ordered KFAs judging by what I can see from the Martyn Read site?

    Cheers, Phil.

  2. I hope this is the right place to post this as its not 100% Dapol related, but I am very confused by the various types of freightliner flats that exist in n-gauge and want to buy some Dapol wagons subject to answers to my question! Dapol make or have made Megafret and Spine wagons, while Farish have 'Intermodal wagons' and Revolution are about to produce PFA/KFA flats.

I would like to try and track down the Dapol Megafrets and Spine wagons (particularly the latter) on the secondhand market, but before I do this, would all these different types of freightliner wagon be seen in the same train formation? Is the 'Intermodal' wagon by Farish the same as a 'Megafret' by Dapol for example? Would a Dapol 'Spine Wagon' run with a 'Megafret' and/or a PFA/KFA and/or a 'Spine Wagon'? I'm utterly confused!!

Thanks in anticipation of anyone who has knowledge of this before I start parting with cash for Dapol flats! (I have plenty of the Farish 'Intermodal Wagons' and have KFAs on order from Revolution).

    Best wishes, Phil.

  3. Good evening,

Thought I'd post a picture with a posed full WCML rake complete with class 86. Even though I don't have space for the full length train shed at home, it still fits in the space rather nicely.

(boards starting to fill up with stuff!!)

    Best regards,

    Jeremy

    Looking very impressive Jeremy!!

  4. Hi,

One of the great things about my job is that I get to meet many different and interesting people from all walks of life, and occasionally I stumble across someone who shares a mutual interest in railways like myself. That said, I have been lucky to have a sign commissioned for me by someone I met through work for the layout in the exact NSE and BR colours. It's a reproduction of an actual sign that was at the station. I provided a photo of it and this is what they produced for me.

I proudly picked it up today and I'm really chuffed with the end result.

Here it is displayed on the layout. I'll hang it on the wall eventually and it will also be taken with me when I exhibit Euston.

Thanks again Neil for sorting this for me!

    Best regards,

    Jeremy

That is fabulous Jeremy!! I suspect many of us (myself included) would like to ask your friend to do some work like this for our own layouts! Your layout is brilliant and is going to be even more brilliant when finished and that sign will be the cherry on the icing on the cake I expect!

  5. Bought 2 x 3 packs of these Polybulk hoppers today at an amazing price and they are amazing models especially considering they are n-gauge - the detail is incredible!

A question though - I have no idea whether my rail blue locos should be pulling these or not? They are listed as Era 7/8 on the Bachmann website, but that covers quite a long time period! If anyone has any info I would be grateful - also did these hoppers operate in trains of only the same hoppers, or can I mix them with other freight rolling stock?

Thanks for any information anyone can provide!

    Best wishes, Phil.

  6. It was thanks to Dapol that I got into n-gauge modelling when they started giving Farish a run for their money, but if that pre-production shot really is how this is going to look when it reaches the shops then that has to be one of the most glaring overall 'shape' issues in recent times.

N-gauge is forgiving to some extent given the fact that most if the images we see are significantly magnified, but I can't see this one 'getting away with it' on that basis. As one of the many who pointed our various issues to Dapol (and had them acknowledged) this is really frustrating and as a die-hard modeller of the northern scene I was itching to get my hands on a few of these - but not on the basis of the sample photo here.

Of more concern however is that fact that if this doesn't sell on the basis of these avoidable errors, we then risk that being interpreted by Dapol as low demand for n-gauge - and how many more projects will then be listed as in abeyance?

A bit gutted really :( Crowd funding beckons perhaps? Get this right and I can imagine these selling well?

  7. Very disappointing. I sent Dapol plenty of photos highlighting how and where the distortion had occurred and explaining where it needed correcting. I got a polite letter thanking me for my input. Later it looked like the windows had been improved so I assumed it was heading in the right direction.

Sadly the taper on the lower part of the "face" has been stretched making it far too tall. In fact the whole tumblehome is wrong. Oh well, I won't be getting any. :(

Yes the tumblehome seems incorrect throughout - very sad to see this especially given that I had also contacted Dapol directly to point out the various issues :(

  8. I am in awe of your airbrushing skills Jeremy! Lovely work indeed. A while back you showed two Virgin class 87s that you were going to respray-I also bought a couple to paint BR blue but have never used an airbrush as you know, so can I ask how you remove all the glazing and small detail and how you strip the Virgin livery? Your work has really inspired me to 'have a go'! Really enjoying this thread-keep up the great work!

    Cheers, Phil

  9. Decided to get the airbrush out last night and paint the pantograph well. Quite pleased with how it's turned out. Just the side grills to paint, varnish and transfers to go and maybe a little light weathering!

    attachicon.gifIMG_7701.JPG

    Best regards,

    Jeremy

Looks great Jeremy and thanks for the advice on the airbrush :)

Can I ask how you managed to mask the blue sides up to roof level to avoid any seepage of the light grey in the pantograph well down onto the blue sides? I had always assumed I would need to paint the well by hand because if the difficult of masking?

The 86 is looking great by the way!!

    Cheers, Phil.

  10. Phil, Jeremy is right, buy an airbrush and have a go, I use railmatch paints and thinners, I prefer the enamels, I find them easier to apply. I have 3 rail blue 86's and 2 in intercity along with an 87 under way at the mo. I'll try and put a couple of pictures up over the weekend.

I will say my track and tracklaying is nothing like Jeremy's and this thread is a real pleasure to read and feel jealous about! But seriously it is a pleasure to read.

    Dave

Thanks so much Dave - I'm really inspired by Jeremy's work and am keen to do just that :)  Yep, like you my track looks decidedly dodgy compared to Jeremy's!

Look forward to seeing your pics - can you direct me to the thread where you will post them?

  11. Cheers Phil! I've got a Voilamart airbrush, it was recommended to me by Cav (RBE on RMweb) and it's brilliant. Think I've got the hang of getting the paint to the right consistency and then it's just a case of working out how much air pressure/paint ratio to go for. Try on a piece of plasticard first just to see how it's coming out. I always start with a dusting over and then just lots of thin layers until it looks about right. That seems to work for me anyway.

Have a go mate and see how you get on. Start with a simple livery like NSE like I did! He he!!

In all seriousness, you will be fine. It's all about practice.

The glazing should just pop out but sometimes needs a little help on the inside to remove it. Masking tape wise I use Tamiya 6mm and cut out sheets of A4 paper to wrap around the model.

Good luck and by the way, I love your layout, the scenery is one of the best on RMweb.

    Best regards,

    Jeremy

Thanks so much for the advice and very kind words Jeremy - this thread is hugely inspirational and its great that you are flying the flag for n-gauge AC electrics!

Can I ask - the Voilamart airbrush - do you use a compressor with it or one of the cans of aerosol propellant? I have an old Badger airbrush but am appalled to say I have never used it, aside from one attempt that ended up in an almighty mess - but you have encouraged me to have a another go so thanks very much for that!!

I'm wondering whether to try with an aerosol propellant can again, or if that is a false economy given the mess I made last time? If a compressor isn't too pricey I may go for that - would be be interested to know what model you bought?

All the best and keep up the great work!! Cheers, Phil.

  12. Good evening,

Decided to get the airbrush out tonight. Here is one of three BR blue liveried 86's that will feature on Euston. In 1989, there were still three 86's remaining in this livery. This one will eventually be 86206 "City of Stoke On Trent"

    Best regards,

    Jeremy

That's superb Jeremy - I have two class 87 body shells that I would like to spray in rail blue, but I have never used an airbrush before and you have inspired me to have a go! Can I ask what equipment you use, how you removed the glazing etc and how you mask to spray the pantograph well? If I can get mine looking half as good as yours I will be happy!!! Cheers, Phil.

  13. Good evening,

Well, it's been a little while since I last posted. Since my last post Ian Morgan has been over to help me start off the electrics and set me up with a turnout operation system. Thanks again Ian for giving up your Sunday to help me out. It's much appreciated.

I've also been painting the class 317 into Network Southeast livery. I think it's come out really well considering this is the first time I've used an airbrush. I've taken my time to mask up the lines and upsweeps and I think it's that that has contributed to the end result. Below are some photos of the various stages.

Just the transfers and three more coaches to go now!

    Best regards,

    Jeremy

    Absolutely superb!

  14. Sorting through old photos I found this shot on a strip of negatives.

No idea of the date but it's either summer 1979 or 80. Hope it's of interest.

    Regards

    Alan

Thats a great shot Alan!! Many thanks indeed!

Makes me realise that I may need to add some more vegetation. I have a similar shot taken at about the same time from a carriage door window when I was 10 years old - but it was taken on a tiny cartridge film camera and you can just make out the overflow from the motion blur if you squint and use your imagination!!! ;)

  15. Lovely model - very impressed with both the appearance and running qualities. Yes shame about the yellow over blue issue, but like others, I hadn't noticed it until it was pointed out! Won't be noticeable after light weathering I suspect. Looking forward to the 33/1 now :)

  16. Good evening,

A bit more progress on the class 317 has taken place and I've dipped my toe into the world of airbrushing. I've managed to clean off the body and primed the body shell. The great thing is that by doing this, it highlights any imperfections which can be sorted out before the NSE livery goes on.

So here it is, I've also now fitted the tiny air horns to the cab roofs. These were bought from the 2mm association shop in sizes 2mm and 3mm as, upon studying many photos, it appears that they are different sizes to each side of the head code box.

    attachicon.gifIMG_7487.JPG

There's a bit more work to be done to the roof and the cab front lights but I think it's really starting to look the part now, even with just the primer on.

    Best regards,

    Jeremy

    Looking very nice indeed!!!

  17. Why? Are you building a model of the whole tunnel?

No, but the tunnel area will be sealed off to prevent light getting into it from where my camera is in the shot above - I've tried several ways to stop light filtering through without complete success, so now its going to be properly blacked out.

  18. I'm at a show this weekend...I know the guy who organises the Uppermill show (it's actually Pennine MRC rather than Huddersfield) I'll mention it if I get chance.... The Uppermill show is pretty small but it's in a nice spot...might be an easy introduction!

    Contact details are here.... http://penninemodelrailway.club/

Thanks very much indeed-yes if you could mention it at the weekend that would be much appreciated.

    Best wishes, Phil

  19. phill hudersfield mrs run a show at saddleworth museum every year the museum has hst re opened after a refurb and expansion so may suit you know its tuther end of the tunnel but its topical ?

That sounds like a good one to start with - will see if I can make contact with them - would be great to exhibit close to the prototype!

    Cheers, Phil.

  20. Hi Phil

What did you use for the grass? It looks bloody amazing!

    Mike

Thanks for the kind compliment Mike.

The grass is a variety of techniques, but common to all areas is brown household emulsion painted over cheapo filler which itself is smoothed over a Styrofoam base.

Then a base layer of Woodland Scenics Blended Turf Green blend over all grassed areas. The slopes above and beside the tunnel mouth had copious amounts of static grass added and then some random applications of various scatters and some light brushing of weathering powders to add some additional tonal variety.

Other grassed areas were all treated to a roughly equal mix of static grass and scatter over the base layer of WS Blended Turf - the Blended Turf on its own is a little bit too garish for my taste and a little too uniform, so it always needed toning down/breaking up a touch.

    Cheers, Phil.
