  1. Try this for size. Modified old M7 body on Hornby jinty chassis.
  2. I am getting very annoyed reading umpteen requests for Hornby to re-tool models already in the range. What is wrong with their existing LMS 8F & why o why should they be expected to produce multiple variants of the MN?. How many people really need half a dozen pacifics on their layout? A Brighton K sounds an excellent idea as does a GE E4. Let's have some variety in the new models, not slightly different re-runs of existing models. Roger.
  3. The large tank engine for the GE section was intended for the Liverpool St-Southend run, not to Norwich. It would have avoided using the turntable at Liverpool St so many times a day. The B17 were built to a strict weight limit & suffered from broken frames & rough riding due to insufficient rigidity. The first batch built were quickly fitted with new frames.
  4. How about this for model that has been built & actually works very well. Started life as a Hornby Railroad 9F with a mazak rotted tender.
  5. Do you mean like this? A GER semi corridor lavatory composite with luggage compartment. It is slightly too long, the panelling is wrong & it needs better bogies but I like it.
  6. Hi. This is my 4-4-0 version of the N class 2-6-0. Bachmann N boiler on Hornby tender drive Schools chassis. Powered by Hornby compound tender cut down to near correct height. It should probably have smoke deflectors but I like the look of it without.
  7. The loco in question was Kleinbahn and had not suffered from Mazak rot but was very stiff. Now free running but noisy. Kleinbahn Re4/4 do suffer from Mazak rot. I know, I've got one. Roger
  8. Hi TT-Pete Interestingly the model was sold as "used" Which according to Ebay means " fully operational, functions as intended". It was also described as " not tested" which rather contradicts the Ebay definition. The loco was in immaculate condition still wrapped in Kleinbahn tissue. When I first applied power, just a buzz, so I removed the motor which ran perfectly. As the wheels would not move I suspected Mazak rot but as it was bone dry i lubricated thoroughly, probably too much but it began jerky movement. I left it overnight and was better the following day and has improved since. I reckon it had never been used or oiled and just needs running in. So no Mazak rot. Roger
  9. Hi. I have recently acquired a second hand Kleinbahn model of the Austrian class 93 tank. It is a very poor runner, there being little side play in the axles & I suspect Mazak rot has swollen the main casting. Has anybody else had this problem? Thanks Roger.
  10. I know that what we in the UK call the USA tank was also used in France & Yugoslavia after WW2. My question is " What other European countries made use of them?" Possible industrial use also? My small, private, Austrian branch line has recently acquired one ( Hornby Acho) & I should like to know if it is remotely possible or do I just use rule !? Thanks Roger.
  11. Try brake fluid, carefully. Start on an inconspicuous bit first & keep it off your fingers.
  12. I can confirm that others were built. A very useful loco. Did you manage to find a drawing? I built mine from the description in the RCTS book. Cut down L1 boiler & Kitmaster tanks, bunker & cab.
  13. Didn't the LBSC propose a 2-6-2T version of the K?
  14. A colour picture in the January 1964 Railway magazine shows black cylinders & red nameplates.
  15. R2687 appears to be the correct version, but unfortunately as rare as hens teeth & priced accordingly. Come on Hornby, sure to be popular. Thanks for the help. Roger
  16. Hi. I have been looking through old catalogues in an effort to find out if Hornby have ever produced a loco drive model of Flying Scotsman as first preserved by Alan Pegler. ie A3 boiler, single chimney, banjo dome, corridor tender, 4472? The most recent I can find is R2261 but that is tender driven with a somewhat distorted tender top. Thanks. Roger.
  17. Hi. I was recently reading an old Railway Magazine article which compared the use of suburban tank engines by the LSWR, LBSC & SECR. The LSWR & SECR mostly used 0-4-4t of several classes while the LBSCR, although having the D3class of 0-4-4t primarily used 0-6-2t. I therefore decided to build a LSWR 0-6-2t to supplement my G6 0-6-0t which is not very healthy these days. It is basically an old Triang M7 body, with new smokebox & splashers fitted to a Hornby modern 0-6-0 chassis. I think it looks feasible & actually runs very well. I also think that I have found a number not used by the LSWR/SR. Roger
  18. Must be the 8F 2-8-0. Built by LMS, LNER, SR, GWR. Used all over this country, North Africa, Middle East & Turkey. Also the best looking 2-8-0. Would have been the best looking heavy freight loco were it not for the 9F. Roger.
  19. Very definitely Great Eastern. Runs well either way but as there is no front coupling it cannot pull a train in reverse.
  20. Nevertheless they were/still are incredibly useful for the coach bodger. I have cut them up, lengthened them & replaced the rooves to produce LSWR 3 coach sets and GER semi corridor lavatory composites plus some short 6 wheelers using Bachmann Emily coach chassis. My remaining two unmodified coaches run behind Thomas.
