  1. After varnishing the loco this morning, this evenings task was to finish off the model fitting the glazing and hard wiring the lights at one end to replace the damaged lighting socket.

I’ve yet to test it as the work was finished too late to be setting off a sound chip, it will also still need weathering and the handrails painting IMG_9564.jpeg.7eeaadde88aaffc26e7610f3fbbb056d.jpegIMG_9565.jpeg.03cd79e10b1302f4b63a84362f5fbf3a.jpegIMG_9566.jpeg.781d6c2ddb899329dd96830a58943aaf.jpeg

seems a good time to show off the rest of the 37 fleet, starting with the 2022 Bachmann bodies on old chassis

37262, the only one of my 2022 37s that retains Bachmann’s livery (all be it with some modifications to the roof and the names removed)

Next up the locos using the last gen shell but with the Extreme Etchings upgrades to windows and roof grill

37670 fitted with a full set of reinforced windscreens, loco still needs its headcode boxes replacing once I print some more

Finally there are the locos that are the last gen Bachmann model with Extreme Etchings roof grill and a hybrid overlay/reglaze cab.  Earmarked for future upgrades

37403, one of the Railtec plates seems to have fallen off.  I’m still pleased with the hand repainted BR crests to get the faded look.

Just taken an 8function Dapol chip out of another model, and interestingly this one one do the fans at all, just F0-2

I was speaking to a retailer yesterday who mentioned the same issue with the 8fct Dapol chip in Revolutions Caroline, and as per before I had the same issue when I tried it in an Accurascale Deltic.  There’s clearly something odd going on with the Dapol chip, hence thinking I will speak to my retailer about the return process as it’s clearly not fit for purpose

I’ve yet to hear of f3 upwards working in anything

  3. A 6 function Lais chip gives me headlights/marker lights/ fans

(with the switches in dc position), change the switches and it gives nothing working.

    with the imperium3 I’ve changed cv59

to switch the functions from logic to power but it gave no change

  4. I am getting progressively more frustrated with the Dapol chip, more so after reading about its F3-f7 not working in other models by various manufacturers.  Contemplating returning it for a refund as not fit for purpose and giving in and buying the right chip!

a start on the transfers from @railtec-models,  with just the cantrail and reflective stripe still to add.  I’m not 100% happy with the fit of the nose grills,

once it’s varnished I might try removing and refitting (but will need to print and paint a replacement set first).  At least with a home painted model it’s easy to colour match.

Will be in Bristol watching my 10 year old’s final performance at the Opera tonight so I doubt it will be finished until tomorrow now.

Finally got mine today as a birthday gift, however having quite a weird issue with DCC.

Using a Dapol chip, I can get the fans working fine, and the decoder supply’s 5 volts. (Tail lights don’t work due to the way I’ve re-programmed the decoder used for testing), however, using a Zimo mn340C, the decoder only seems to be supplying 3ish volts and the fans do not work. But when the Zimo chip is in another loco, it can supply the full 5 volts just fine? Not an issue I’ve encountered before.

Assuming this is the 8fct Dapol?  How have you managed to get it to do anything on F3/4 upward?  Mine is still refusing to do any more than the core 4 functions.

Interesting, plus he seems to share the same interests in cars as me given his eBay moniker.

How hard is it to get hold of a Bachmann Earl chassis?

Plus as @BWsTrains asks, where to get a print that did pass inspection?

I am probably going to regret saying this given the amount of interest in the bodies

However its possible to buy all of the bits to build a dukedog chassis for about £50 from Bachmann Spares (on top of which you will need fixings and wheels for the 3d printed bogie, buffers and handrail parts along with your choice of tender.

it needs a little bit of rework where the masking hasn’t quite held up, going to have to do something about the LH side where it looks like the gold stipe gets fractionally wider.   Then it’s a case of painting the body side grill grey and adding transfers.  Should be finished over the weekend all being well.

the NVA was less successful, mostly because the Phoenix First Blue was more of a purple than a blue. So it’s now back to square one trying to find something passable for the prototype

It depends where they are fitted and whether there is an option for fit kinematic type couplers. There's very little option for a Kinematic on something like a 37 or 47 with the bogies right up behind the bufferbeam. I don't really see how the NEM pocket differs if bogie mounted or kinematic mounted tbh, its still in the same place.

Its a lot easier to chop the awful looking thing off without visible damage when its mounted on a kinematic setup than when its part of the bogie.  Of course in the case of the 56 the combination of the sandboxes from the sides and the bash plate from the front mean that is not necessary.

a coat of Phoenix GWR green, followed by a mix of weathered black for the frame/smokebox and it’s almost there.  Just need some new drill bits to get the holes opened out for the handrails and I can finish it off.   For now loco and tender are not connected as I will want them separate while doing handrails

really impressed with how this has turned out

I've a fan question too.  I've a LokPilot decoder from trains4u fitted and it has been proper programmed.  I've tried the DIP switches for the fans in both settings and they don't seem to work.  They should be on F9 and 10.  Are the fans speed dependent?  It's a shunting puzzle so nothing moves quickly and I wonder if they are working but they aren't meeting a 'threshold' to start turning.  Any help much appreciated

Certainly for the sound fitted example it was mentioned earlier in the thread that the fans are driven by how hard the loco is working.  I assume the same is true if you are running a lokpilot with the full Cavalex settings.

Whereas on a non LokPilot / non cavalex setup the fans are on F3/F4 and are controlled by switching on the function.

  12. That makes for an interesting solution that I will have to have a go at. While I now only have 3 finished old 37s remaining (plus the one thats earmarked for 902 conversion), at least two of them are models I am less likely to upgrade to the later body (due to painting the logos on 403 and the lack of a heavyweight shell on the Loadhaul one).

Will attempt it when I convert the other end of 902s body which should make for a good test piece.

Just the original chip. Have headlights and high intensity like you but independent fan operation on F3 and F4

Very confused as to why mine is refusing to behave now, as far as i can tell everything is set up to at the very least give manual control over the same as you have achieved with the earlier version of the Dapol chip (and in theory the tail lights as well)

Guess the next step will be swapping over with the chip in my deltic and seeing if the decoder will work all 8 functions in that in order to eliminate a partially faulty decoder

Many thanks for that, I will measure the width over the wheels of one of my outside framed locos, to double check, but I think all will be well.

I have double checked, Bachmann Earl is 23mm between the insides of the splashers, I dont recall there being a need to remove material in Gibson's guide for an EM gauge conversion on this

Great to hear about the sound upgrade pack coming down the line soon!

I'm currently using a Dapol decoder in my Class 56 and setting both dip switches to DC operation will give you operation of the fans.

When I turn the power to my layout off my Class 56 shoots background, I presume that's the stay alive discharging?

Interesting as I’m also using the Dapol chip, but only have the headlights / high intensity working is your the original or the 8 fct version?

if I could get the fans working it would be more than adequate until I get round to upgrading to sound

I’ve also had the loco shooting off when the power is switched off. The first time almost going off the end of the layout before grabbing it
