I have a copy of a small book, reprinted by the Railway Gazette from an article in the magazine of July 8th 1921. It is entitled "The Traffic Control System of the Midland Railway". It repeats the 1909 instructions concerning goods and mineral trains. However the article also contains facsimiles of a number of Midland railway documents as used in 1920/1, which refer to freight trains instead of goods trains. David

Gamston today, on the ECML just south of Retford. The nearest village is Eaton. It was always a pleasant space to spend a couple of hours with plenty of space to park and some good views of the line. There is a foot crossing there (I think it was a farm occupation crossing then), so you could be quite close to the track without trespassing. As far as I know they are effectively wagons used within stations but which are no longer maintained and cannot be used in traffic and may not leave the station they are based at. David

More Great Western today with another set of photos taken at Bristol in 1977 and 1989. The 1977 photos were taken by Dad, from to his slide catalogue he didn't visit anywhere else in the area at the time, so it must have a been a quick visit to do with his work. The 1989 photo is one of mine, I was at a conference staying in a hotel very close to Parkway station. I must have slipped away for a while late one afternoon. I can remember the journey there and back from Newcastle but what I was there for is a bit hazy. It may have been to do with timetabling (sadly for schools, not railways). Times have indeed changed. Many people today seem to have less awareness of danger. The photos are simply a record of what things were like then, please don't get too involved in discussing trespass today as compared to then, the world has changed and comment is not really all that useful. David

I think Dad must have made a special trip to Chinley North Junction in October 1977 to see Leander. I have taken the caption for the special from Dad's notes but I think it was probably the East Anglian which ran on 15th October 1977 from Liverpool St. to Dinting and return. It should have been hauled by SR 841 from Manningtree to March but it failed at Ipswich. Dad photographed the return working. I was at Manningtree on the same day to see 841 set out.
