and finally for now some at Breamore restored platform and beware of trainsand before restoration run down

Has anyone found any others on Photobucket?

  2. Hi all,

With thanks to Chris Osment, he pointed me in the direction of an Illustrated history of Southern Signals by Pryer, which had a drawing showing a type 2 box.

As a result the drawing of Bailey Gate box is now well underway. I am assuming the rear of the box was planked, but were they vertical like Shillingstone or horizontal like Sturminster. Answers on a postcard.

More to come as its finished

  3. Morning all,

I am hoping you can help. As some of you may know over the last few years I have been working on architectural drawings of primarily the southern end of the S&D to add to the Trust Web site. In that time I have done most of the structures at Blandford, the signal box and waiting shelter at Wincanton, most of the buildings at Shillingstone, the main building at Sturminster, the main building at Bailey Gate and gradually emerging is the main building at Stalbridge.

Now I am trying to put a drawing of the box at Bailey Gate together. It appears to have LSWR type 2 windows, and those windows look to be the same size as those at Shillingstone. I know Shillingstone box was 13'6" x 11'6" from information kindly given by the Shillingstone station group.

Does anyone either know the size of the type 2 frames - or has a drawing that would help with that -- or do you think the size of the windows at those two boxes is definatley the same size.

Once finished I will post the drawing on here as well as the Trust Web site.

Thanks for your help in advance

  4. Indeed they have theu have a couple of nice rare views of the back of the station. From it you can clearly see how the postbox was moved from the platofrm to the rear of the building.

We should also remember the article in British Railways Illustrated on a days spotting at Broadstone. It contains details of all the trains spotted and some usefull photos.

Tim are you ok if we add photos into this stream as well?

  5. Also remember that members of the South Western Circle can borrow portfollios which have both documents, some plans and photos.

South Western Circle portfollio- The Sailisbury and Dorset

South Western Circle portfollio - Castlemans Corkscrew - has some photos of West Moors

Modelling Railways Illustrated ---- plan of the footbridge at West Moors

HMRS Vol issue plans of Breamore

HMRS Vol issue a waiting shelter for Verwood by Mick Hutson

Steam Days March 2000 The Fordingbridge Line

I will check and insert when i find the copies.

  6. Moving briefly off the main route, I came across this nice photo of the signal box at Coldstream on the last day.

    My link

and no doubt many of you have found the excellent Northumbrian railways web site, again for consistency again here is Coldstream My link

Although there is lots of very nice stuff such as the Border Counties My link

As for the rebuilding it can't come soon enough to be able to ride on it for the very first time

  7. Lovely to see Highland stock on here, a great thread.

Geoff is a member so will probably see your post. the design of the spacers is so that you can put the spacers where you want to fit your own motor, gear train and overall frame set up preferences. Generally they work quite well, although i agree its different to some others.

Did you manage to get the body as a spare?

  8. It looks like the floor is above the wheels arch , so a further plate can be added to the floor to get clearances.

You are quite right on this, I was at Higley today measuring for 82045 and took the time to look at the mogul. The washouts are exactly as you have done. The floor is flat and does not have splashers. The one thing i remembered when looking at it is the atomiser is a coil rather than as shown in your photo, but that could be an SVR thing.

Really enjoying seeing you make a loveley engine out of a basic kit.

    Best wishes

    Duncan

  9. The listing is breaking Ebay rules, no loading of postage to cover low bidding is allowed , the seller is open to a complaint being made against him. He should have quoted postage and placed a reserve start price to minimise his risk of a low value sale costing him money.

People should read the rules on Bidding and Selling, they are not complex, but some sellers, especially Buy it now from the FE, load the postage to make the headline price low.

That may be true, however if a complaint is made would ebay do anything anyway?

  10. While there is alot of madness there are some amazing deals you can get. I bought a Crownline West Country, brand new and unstarted for £59 including postage.

When i got the kit it also had a full Markits wheel set with it, so the kit in real terms was £3 - I am over the moon!

If you want real madness at the moment have a look at what some negatives are going for. A neg of Monsal Dale in 1968 that just show the platforms, no buildings and not that special for £102 ! one of Millers Dale went for £46 and a slide of Winchester with a SR DMU went again for over £100. Who says there's a recession.

Finally for full madness how about this one a finescale B1 that in the 1970s would have been excellent but at £160 has not sold in 2 years

  11. Hi,

You really are setting a really high standard and it is great to see how to do it, I must get round to my conversion and this is a good incentive.

The tear shaped object on the drivers side of the smokebox is the atomiser for the lubricators, you cannot see the superheaters on the outside of the loco.

As for a good book on the basics i would suggest either "How steam locomotives really work" by Semmens and Goldfinch or "Raising Steam, the design operation and driving of steam locomotives" by D Griffiths.

If on the other hand you want a more detailed text then either "handbook for steam locmotive enginemen" published by the British Transport commission or for even more technical book then "locomotive Management, Cleaning Driving Maintenance the last version of which was published in about 1955 (that i know to)

    Hope this helps

    Kind regards

    Duncan

  12. I spotted this on Saturday evening......Making me wish i had not sold mine now!!! But there was not many made before Lima went bang in early 2000. There is always some silly sod that is willing to pay OTT just to have one.....I did see some time ago that the TFRB were fetching £125.00 each alone.

Same goes for the Lima ScotRail Swoosh 156.....£200 and counting.......

    Happy eBaying blink.gifblink.gifblink.gif

Ps, may i add i got £100 for my Lima Fag packet rake!!!!!!! DAMN ohmy.gif

What a shame, it did not sell!

  13. What is striking (and is great) about this thread and the photos is that everyone appears to be full of praise for this engine, with not one complaint. Hornby really need a pat on the back for getting an engine so spot on.

    Roll on the B17s

  14. A couple of other thoughts on this excellent thread would be English Heritage, they hold a surprising amount of railway pictures, ok they are not cheap but they might just be able to help. They usefully send out photocopies so you can choose what you want to order.

Another thing i have found as invaluable rather than just collecting the information, if your going to prepare plans to make models offer them back to who ever gives you information. Daft as it sounds if people offer to let you see information you have asked about, follow it up.

Finally dont forget ask others if they know of others you should be speaking to. Certainly for drawings of the S&D at the southern end , you find working on one station gives information on a different one so more information is spread around.

    all the best

  15. I Have a scale plan of Goathland which from the crossing at the Grosmont end to the Road bridge at the Pickering end was about 9'. However as Dave rightly says to do it justice you need more lenght than that.

Good luck with the project and look forward to seeing how you do. The Hornby water tower, waiting shelter and coal drops are right although the goods shed and station buildings need some alteration to make them accurate the Goathland.

    Best regards

    Duncan
