  1. It really shouldn't be rocket science to fix an issue like that. Why the computer can't look at train speed, and decide it's too low for dynamic braking, and just apply the friction brakes, instead of using the dynamic brake, sensing the braking effort isn't high enough, and switching to friction braking, I don't know.
  2. Off topic slightly-does anyone do a working model of a gauge changing train, like a Talgo?
  3. Hitachi must be looking at the UK, comparing it to Japan, and rubbing their hands in glee-Xmas every day for them. Where else would you be able to sell a diesel and an electric train rolled into one, and get to be able to charge for maintaining the diesels for the foreseeable future, because the government won't take the long term view and electrify properly?
  4. Having googled for Tornado's 100mph run, I believe it was a test, done at night, with a rake of Mk2's. The rolling resistance is probably lower than mk1 stock, and the weight is likely to be more like 33t per coach. Being a test train, it may have been a short rake, but I can't find any definitive info on it. Someone must know-the truth is out there!
  5. Life's good when you find a stash of beer you'd forgotten you had! I picked up a box of assorted ales from a shop in Lynmouth in 2017. Was going to give them as Xmas presents, but forgot about them, and they've been hidden in the back of the wardrobe for 2 years! They're out of date now, so I'm going to drink them myself
  6. Then I can only assume it was not level track, or there was a heck of a wind behind it! I would think a tour would be a minimum of 8, probably 10, to make it pay.
  7. What are the figures for 10 or 8 coaches? Are they more believable?
  8. Not sure how many coaches that particular train was, but a typical Mk1 is around 35t, and just over 19m long. A typical railtour rake of 12 coaches would be 420t, and ~230m long.
  9. Who says GBRf won't take over the franchise at some point in the future? Or that a major failure or accident damage might put a TPE loco OOU for a while, necessitating hiring in a GBRf one?
  10. So a 10 car IET is about 13 runs. 3 fours and a single should do it.
  11. And I don't think we can down play too much the "dead hand" of the DfT in much of the IET/IEP specs. I suspect if GWR & LNER (and it's predecessors) and other interested parties had been left to their own devices, and maybe collaborated, on the IEP, the rolling stock may have turned out differently.
  12. I guess we forget that the HST's didn't have a trouble free entry into service. It was some years before they had all bugs fixed, defects ironed out, and were really settled down into reliable service.
  13. That's actually quite a handsome beast.
  14. Nice one! I suppose you'd still be able to have the deeper ashpan and larger diameter boiler of the Brit with that configuration. Are you not tempted to use the larger tender with full height sides?
  15. Now how about a Beyer-Garrett 9F? Brit boiler, 2-6-0+0-6-2, maybe oil fired? 4x16" cyls.
