    Another round of short-sighted decision making which we will come to regret in future years. Once they're gone, they're gone, and just like closed railway lines, they will be a load harder and more expensive to replace.

    The best ride I had on a Pacer was Bristol TM-Taunton, on a visit to the WSR diesel gala, in 2008. Bowling along at 70mph+ on the mainline was quite the experience! But they were designed for something different-lower speed branch & secondary lines, not intensive commuter services and long distance semi-inter city services. I think I'd take a ride in one on a heritage diesel gala, but no, not sure I'd make a special visit for one.

    Dunkerque train ferry unloading at Dunkerque, October 1981. Never seen this modelled- has it been done?

    Nearly 2 months late, sorry, only just discovered this, but just over 50 years ago, the first electric train ran from Crewe to Preston. Although the letter is not addressed to my Dad, he was on this train, and I have cine film of it. Names have been redacted.

    Thanks Ian. I'm not sure what transfers I'm using (it's a couple of months since I did it, and it's all put away at the moment), but I think they are Methfix. Will report back!

    It's an Airfix Castle that I am re-liverying into BR green with early crest as 7013 Bristol Castle. I've done 1 band, but it's a bit wobbly, and I'm tempted to remove it and re-apply it. I found it difficult to get it on straight-masking tape and a cocktail stick may make all the difference.

    Cane anyone give me some tips on how best to apply boiler band lining to locos please? I'm trying to apply BR lining to a 4mm scale Castle. First attempt was not very good, and I don't want to waste too much more! Thanks.

    I've been on a Northampton Cobbler behind a class 81 (002 I think, will have to check), which failed somewhere about a mile outside Northampton station. After some while, a class 08 appeared and dragged us into the station. I've also witnessed a failed Freightliner being pushed by a class 310 EMU (or at least attempting to push it!). How far it made it I don't know, this was somewhere near Milton Keynes, so possibly only as far as Bletchley.

    It's certainly happened at the top of Camden bank, only about a mile to coast into Euston.

    Has a departmental loco ever assisted a passenger train? I'm thinking primarily of the class 23 5905, 24 97201, etc, but there were of course numerous departmental shunters such as class 08 97801 Pluto, and the WR PWM shunters.

    The Hughes 4-6-0's & Baltic tanks also had 2 sets, the rocking lever arrangement was closely followed in the Coronations.
