  1. Interesting that they were numbered in the carriage series, 43xxx. When did the last MK1 suburbans numbered in that range disappear?
  2. I rather hope 5032 reappears in its early unauthentic two tone green when it finally reappears.
  3. HST power cars at the SVR, Sunday 5th Nov. In line, nearest to furthest away:- 43480 (Rail Adventure, presumably not being exported) 43307 43306 43320 43316 43468 (Rail Adventure, presumably not being exported) TBH, 306, 307, 317 & 320 look pretty ropey from the outside.
  4. In any other country, yes, that's what would happen, it would be a fully electrified double track line, possibly 4 between Didcot & Oxford, maybe Reading-Basingstoke would be wired as well, and there would be proper links in to the ECML & GE lines. But this is Britain in late 2023, so you can forget it.
  5. Funny number, I thought all carriage numbers were 3, 4 or 5 digits. Wasn't aware of any other than departmental stock that carried 6 figures.
  6. ISTR it split at Sheffield, with a portion to Newcastle and a portion to Hull. The return working was a Hull- Poole which joined a Newcastle-Poole at Sheffield, being shunted onto said service by one of Sheffield Midland's resident shunters.
  7. In most cases, you would be more or less building a new railway. A wise man once said to me, as we were walking along a long abandoned railway, that what you can see is about 10% of what you need to turn it into a working railway again.
  8. Correct. A large section between Bicester & Bletchley was single line already, and had been since about 1984, and the whole line had been on bare minimum maintenance before it was mothballed. They are effectively building a new railway out there, it just happens to be following the old formation. Even if the line had remained open as a single line freight route, it would have required major work to turn it into a modern railway fit for 75-90mph passenger trains.
  9. In Holland recently, even the public loos (yeah I know, what are they?) were contactless card payments only.
  10. It'll be interesting to watch the endless legal dispute over what "seaworthy" means.
  11. Was in the Netherlands recently. Car driven into the underground car park at the hotel and stayed there, all travelling done by train/bus/tram. We bought all our train tickets via the NS app, using it to scan the barcodes at the barriers, and we used the tap on/tap off system on all the buses & trams. Despite all this, there were still fully staffed ticket offices manned by both NS & local transport operators, and small one person information booths on the concourses. Both were well used.
  12. I'm not sure most of "the public" are bright enough or well informed enough to do anything other than read & believe the guff they see printed in their chosen daily rag, or broadcast on tv/radio.
  13. What do they call it? Dead cat? The country is littered with dead cats currently.
  14. It's much the same as asking how much the Werrington flyover diveunder cost compared to if the GN&GE had been mothballed. Even if it had been mothballed, there are so many level crossings on the March-Spalding section (roughly 1 per mile I think?), that it would have involved a boat load more work to restore than just fettling up the track. As it is, the line is so far gone that it would be a total rebuild, you might as well just build a totally new railway.
  15. You'd still have to double track it, the single line section was in place in the mid-80's, and although the second line remained in place, it was nowhere near fit for reuse. So, some drainage works apart, most of what is being done would be necessary anyway.
  16. I'm not holding my breath on either of those two scores.
  17. Another non-GW one for your delight & delectation, Leighton Buzzard was a small 2 road shed that was a sub-shed of the much larger Bletchley (1E), some 6.25 miles further north.
  18. Playing devils advocate, how common would classes 28xx/42xx/72xx be there? 😀
  19. What's the current situation of Britannia? I've tried Royal Scot Locomotive & General's website, but it is impressively uninformative, no actual news and very little information, just series of links to each locomotive that turn out to be blank pages, apart from the inevitable "follow us on Facebook" link.
  20. What's the first thing you expect to find when you walk into a bar in the heart of Madrid? That's right, a nameplate off a GWR Star class of course! This is from 4016, no idea whether it's an original, but it looks convincing enough. The bar was called Bar Santa Ana, in Plaza Santa Ana, Madrid.
  21. Here's a rubbing I did of 47580's plate. Not sure when, but I'd guess around 1980/81, probably at Liverpool St.
  22. Here's "Earl Mountbatten of Burma" when it was on 33027. Photo taken at Norwich Crown Point open day, 24.09.1983.
  23. Thought I'd already posted this, but obviously not. NS 1501, the former 27003, in the NS Spoorwegmusuem, Utrecht, 20.10.2023.
