  1. Hiya Pannier Tank, its a might have been 'Super Deltic' blog post from a while back here explaining a bit more, just a bit of fun really using up some scrap bodies http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/861/entry-11695-not-one-for-the-purists/ Cheers James
  2. Them 2 50s powering through in that picture, you can feel the earth just looking at it! Wish i was around back then! Keep em coming Dave Cheers James
  3. Thanks for the comments guys, Mike the pics are just from my phone, cant beat a samsung camera! Cheers James
  4. Apologies for lack of updates iv been doing a bit of decorating for a mate so thats taken up pretty much all my spare time over the last month or so. Anyway 13 003 last time i left it was painted so slowly but surely transfers were added including thh wasp stripes, slapped a bit of weathering on and then blasted everything over with humbrol satin which i think leaves a lovely sheen. Next i ordered an 08 sound chip from Charlie at DC kits and a couple of sugar cube speakers but then i found a a bigger speaker so put one in the master unit, now it was very loud but something didnt seem right with the engine noise it just didnt sound right to me, i tried a few things moving speakers around etc but i couldnt get it to sound correct to me. I dont doubt that Biffo's sounds are the best around, nearly all my other locos are Biffs sounds but for some reason i dont like the 08 but thats just me so itl be off for re blow as a 40 or 26 i think, iv been searching around at other 08 units on the internet and i cant work out which would be best as i think the problem is in videos its bad microphones picking up small speakers so i cant decide to try another sound project or not. I think ill keep my ear out at exhibitions and see if i can pick one so i spent most of the day de chipping so its just silent & DC only now. Its through wired so its 12 wheel pick up and it runs like a dream and will creep along at a snails pace. Heres a few pics of the completed 13 kncking around the shed yard, i was playing with my camera on the phone as well so iv added a couple more in of the super deltic for a bit of a change. Any comments/questions just fire away, id be interested to hear from anyone with 08 sound units and to see what they think. The 'pipe work' between the unites is the wire for the pick ups, i think it looks pretty good doubling up as air pipes. And i found a panorama setting as well Thank for looking All the best James

  10. Yeah cheap and cheerful, usually just right for all oo locos, and last for ages!
  11. Evening all, in between all this football iv managed to get a bit of modelling done. The class 13 is slowly coming along, since the last update iv got some small details added but the biggest job left to do was change the doors from wooden to steel panelled looking ones. After a bit of a think i came up with a plan, first job was cutting some plasticard to fill up the recessed panal, easy enough and then milliput the gaps. To create the curved corners of the steel panalled doors, i filed away the top of the doors from the bottom of the window, enough so that i could glue some plasticard over to keep things flush. Once all had set i cut out the window & filed the corners round. Gives a prety good impression i think. Once i was happy with the corners i filed out a recess at the bottom to give an inpression of the lower door handles. After that it was a quick tidy up and a wash and out came masking tape & the primer, all was going well so out came the rail blue. Second coat went on tonight on the bodies, so most of tonight was getting the chassis painted and tidied up. Cheers for looking James
  12. Evening, just a little update on progress on the 13 for tonight. Would have been further on but i spent Sunday over at the KWVR for their diesel gala, very enjoyable day and reasonablt priced ale on the trains! Anyway, last nights work was building some replacement steps at teh front and r/h cab, pretty straight forward job with some styrene and liquid poly, reslly helps to make it look like an 08/13 again now they is something there again. They arnt perfect but im hoping once they are painted theyll disapear into the chassis a bit more. Before After After that, its was adding various handrails, simple enough but teh knobs i used were slightly too big i think they were off a an ancient airfix castle. They do the job and look ok and after some tidying up and painting im sure theyll be fine. Next up was the big buffer beams, these went on last thing last night so tonights job was adding the buffer and the buffer back plates Buffers on next, just needed to open hout the holes slightly, the buffers were salvaged from the 2 left on, iv cobbleed some for the rear of the slave from bits so hopfully not too noticeable that they dont match once its all done. Last job tonight was fitting the hand rails up to the back platform, all was going well until the drill bit got stuck in the white metal bulkhead. I tried getting it out everyway i could think but the inevitable happened and it snappled...... tried re driling but it was a no go so the rails on one side are slightly further inboard than id like but hey ho! Also i have added in the hand brake and the cabinet to the platform in the last couple of days, plenty more research to be done now on the various cables etc but i think progress is pretty good. Definately getting there now, RT models look to have sent the buffer beams and the exhauster box for the master unit today so expect some more progress soon, dare i say paint shops over the weekend? Now watch it chuck it down! Cheers for looking James
  13. Tinsley for me and Healey Mills, vague memories of spotting with me dad early 90s, Tinsley has just about vanished whilst Healey Mills is locked up and going back to nature. A few of me dads pics from late 70s early 80s, bit before my time, just shows whats gone especially Tinsley. Tinsley: ] Google maps from the bridge as it is today, spin around to see just whats gone from the above last 3 pics: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.397545,-1.377936,3a,48.2y,129.57h,88.29t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sWBiMXShdgLkV2eU74u-G_A!2e0 Healey Mills: Google maps, i think this is out of date now as last time i passed i dont think there was anything in the yard https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.66139,-1.575001,3a,49.5y,299.56h,89.44t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1siq5EAB4EhK9UUkl45FZ3Qg!2e0
  14. Evening all, thanks to a couple of very fortunate ebay purchases earlier this week i have just taken the plunge and started creating my very own class 13. Im aiming for 13 003 in blue when its finished, but at the moment there is a lot of work to do on the slave unit before i get to the spray cans out So this is what iv started with, a model of 3256, not in the best on nick but useable for the slave unit. I did some research and it soon dawned on me that the 13's all had smooth body side doors, after a bit of thinking out can the files and i removed the strapping, took a while but i think ill gte away with it. The filiing and sanding took up a fair bit of time, but im pretty happy how it went, a blast of pimer is needed though to check. Next job was to file back the end of the bonnet section to fit the end plate from the RT Models pack After that you have to unscrew the decoder socet and the metal block over the gear tower to file it back to clear the end plate After i filed the protrusions down i offered up the plate and checked all was well. I fount the top of the gear tower was preventing the cast white metla bulkhead from sitting flush with the plate so out came the dremel to take some material from the back of it. The red paint in the pic above on the gear tower was used to check id removed enough material from the back of the bulkhead, basically keep offering it up until no paint appears on the back of the casting. Once it all fitted together i removed about 1mm from the bottom of the bulkhead so it sat about right with corners of the plate and glued it all up. Next job was gluing the floor plate in and then folded up the back plate after punching the rivets through, next was gluing a bead of wire round the top, there is a strip included with the kit but i knackered mine by dropping it on the floor and bending it whilst i looked for it (stuck in my sock!) Whilst all that was setting, i turned my attention the chassis, it runs like a dream but has had a hard life, its missing the front left sandbox and also both front steps and r/h cab steps. These are the main things iv found missing also a buffer from each end but nothing that cant be bodged and fabricated. Last thing tonight was fitting a new sandbox, after a bit of thinking i rememberd i hav an ancient old kitmaster 08 sat waiting for snow plough to be added so i borrowed the sand box from there, not ideal but it does the job. Thats about it for now, ill be back at it tomorrow and hopefully get the staps sorted and the big buffer beams on, also the pile of bits in the back ground is the makings of class 42 Warship, was bought with a badly damaged body some time ago but ran well, a cab transplant from an old mainline warship was done a while back and is now going through the paint shops to become Zebra eventually Cheers for looking James
  15. Just a quick thanks for the quick shipping if the 13 conversion bit RT, always appreciated, caught me out though thinking 2 sets of buffer beams were included, should have read the description on your site properly! Order for master beefy beams on the way. Cheers James P.s word is that Barber is finished and will be at the Yorkshire Show next month before going to Alston, if you need some pics ill be there with work so can sneak off for a bit if it would help you out with the forthcoming kit?
  16. And so the detail differences on 08's become increasingly apparant....

  17. Went to see what was on the mystery thurs only through Harrogate & Knaresborough tonight, was one of the mpv things was hoping for 20's. Still nice pint in taps after so all is not lost!

  18. Gordon looking a little worse for wear in January Needs a fair bit of filler! Cheers James
  19. Finally the sun has appeared today and thankfully iv got a week off so out came the rattle can of satin and Spencer got a blow over to get it ready for naming. I ordered the plates specially from Narrow Planet, great service and the plates are fantastic, really impressed. So tonights job now the varnish had hardened was to get the plates on and finish Spencer off. Very interesting project, if i had to do it again id defiantely look into a better chassis but the mashima motor was easy enough to put in, and a bit of running in im sure itl be fine. So thats 3 out of the Harrogate Gas Works locos, roll on summer when Barber returns from over haul and RT Models kit will hopefully be released. Just need Narrow Plante to get their hopper kits sorted and that will be me sorted! I never thought id the Harrogate Gas Works locos modelled, let alone own them myself so im grateful to all involved who have produced the kits and prvided advice along the way. As Spencer has been runbling on, i have been adjusting the trackwork in the 009 yard and now the track actually continues through the tunnel mounth! except i demolished the tunnel mouth because i was really sick of my original effort from 10 years ago. Armed with the gas works book and a ruler i, set about drafting up a plan for a new tunnel mouth, was quite easy working from a pic and scaling it up, its not exact but it looks a dam site better. Iv trimmed the hill back slightly, its still not ideal coming straight out onto a point but it will have to do, heres a few pics of the process. Also i still need to get round to re ballasting the track after straigtening it back up after some board movement over the years. The new tunnel is made from plasticard and thin ply i had knocking around, pretty pleased with it so far, just need to get it bedded in to the scenery but first job is to re lay the track onto the hidden sidings in 009 rather than some scrappy old n guage we used as a 'practice' As you can see it was a very tight tunnel, its just about to scale but eased out slightly, you might just be able to make out the 'escape hatch' at the back of spencer's cab above the bunker, all the gas works loco's had these just in case they failed in the tunnel, wouldnt like to hae tried mind! And finally another bit of varnishing finished off my 09, it was a model zone limited edition me dad got years back when he worked there, i test ran it straight from the box and one of the extended axles sheared off after an hour or so! Was not happy that night, my dad says he remembers a few of the limited edition 09's came back to the shop with the same thing so any one know if it was a bad batch? Any way it was a long time back so after i calmed doenn i bought a new set of drivers and con rods from ebay and now seems well touch wood. Just pipes to add and its job done. I know i cant really justify it in N Yorkshire but it looks better in BR blue than that horrible mainline scheme it was in. Been a busy week off and its been good to get a couple of bits finished, and clear the desk, next up could be a 13 if i can get a cheapish Hornby 08 hmmm really useful in North Yorkshire! Cheers for looking James
  20. Evening all, Since the last update on Spencer i havnt done mush with it, the trackwork for my 009 wa a bit dodgy so i have been slowly sorting that out and also building up some bargain parkside kits for the 00, so Spencer has been sat around for a while waiting for a break in the wether for a coat of satin varnish and somewhere to run. Now, as payday was last week and a bit of overtime time came through, i decided to take BernardTPM's advice from my last entry and get intouch with Branchlines for a new motor, the Minitrix motor frankly was a bit poor and Spencer was no where near as good as the new farish 08 powered Pecket & Drewery so i bit the bullet and emailed them last week for advice. I ended up with a Mashima 9/16, 90degree mounting plate and a 6/12 1.5 mm bore fly wheel. I ordered the bits last Friday and arrived this Monday, so all credit to Branchline for excellent service. Now i have never attempted owt like this before so on monday i dived in to see what was what, stripping off the 70's (?) Minitrix rubbish was the easy bit so a lot of tea was drunk whilst i figured out how to get the new motor mounted and working. After a while iI figured out it was do able so cracked on, the Mashima shaft is 1.5mm where as the original minitrix one was 1mm. I got the worm off by heating on the hob and giving it a pull, and thankfully it came off without damage to me of the worm. I carefully reamed it out to get it to 1.5mm bore and thankfully got it straight so it sat on the mashima shaft well. Next, i dismantled/destroyed the minitrix motor and extracted the original bearings, and bored them out to 1.5mm which allowed me to mount the new motor pretty much extactly how the original minitrix motor was. Disaster struck when one of the 2 sprung steel mounting clips snapped leaving me with the motor free to move at one end. So monday night ended on a bit of downer and no pics! Tuesday came round and id hatched a plan whilst pro crastinating at work, i had some sprung brass strip so repaired the spring clip by soldering it over the top of the clip and bending at right angles so that the i could solder the snapped leg of the clipon the inside to render it usable again. All systems were go and i was quite inpressed i could get the motor mounted and the worm to mesh so i fixed the flywheel on the back and mounted the mounting plate, packed out the chassis underneath the motor with a bit of plasticard and went for a test. All was well on the workbench with power applied but on the track it was dire, so tonights job was to sort the rubbish pick ups out, and mount the motor so it runs the right way..... All was well, but now i couldt get teh chassis under the body as the Mashima motor is wider than the minitrix one, so out came the dremmell........ Minitrix Mashima Id filled the inside of the tanks with liquid lead so as you can imagine, it was a bit of job to open the body out but thanks to a nasty looking dremell tool i managed to get enough away to get the chassis to sit and not short. Thankfully i didnt go through the tanks of firebox top and destroy my fingers and on the first test all was well and iv had Spencer trundling up and down the sidings with great success. Very pleased with a couple of nights work to get a very good running loco and just a bit relieved that i managed it! Next job is to get some satin varnish on and to get the plates i ordered from narrow planet on the cab & tank sides and i can it done! Couldnt reccomend Narrow Planet more, great service and the plates look great, will be back for more im sure, ill get pics up once we get some warm, suny weather up here in grey dull Yorkshire! Cheers for looking James

Brand new straight out of the box model zone 09, been in its box since my dad brought it home with a healthy discount. Body respayed to rail blue, thought id run the chassis in after an hour a crank came loose and jammed up shearing the middle extended axle, not good!

  22. Ooooh, got a shawplanned Pinza crying out for a sound chip, tanks already cut....................... Best get saving! Cheers Bif James
  23. Cheers RT, thought you might be waiting till it re appears, last heard its at Keef's including boiler but cant see a definate date for a return. It was just a thought regarding the cabs iv just done my own out of plasticard but thought it might sit well with the other gas works kits. Lets hope Barber isnt too far away. Cheers James
  24. Sorry Horse, i did mean a chassis kit for a wd hunslet based on thw farish 08 , the pecket i built with rt's chassis is impecable Cheers James
