Have felt a bit dejected with the hobby recently. My choice to convert to EM has been a challenge to say the least - unpowered rolling stock presents no issue, but i've had very little luck with the RTR motive power. The two D classes have been really difficult. Not to mention my H's (which i've decided will need new chassis built). If i'd stuck with OO I would have none of these issues and could no doubt focus my time and effort on other ventures.

I do not regret my choice - far from it. I think it's prompted me to delve further into the 'finescale' aspect of the hobby, and has introduced me to track building, compensated chassis, etc.

It's just been a few weeks months where nothing feels like it works, or is going right.

Sorry to hear that Jack, but if you had stuck with 00 the dissatisfaction would probably always be there.

Have you converted the Nelson yet?  Wizard Models do a chassis kit (formerly Comet I think) specifically for the purpose of an EM/P4 conversion.

    Your locos are looking superb.

    Cheers, Dave.

The final finish is in early 1950's BR livery with lining transfers from Fox. I found that they were a little tricky to apply but I am pleased with the effect.

So there you have it. Not a masterpiece but at a total cost of about £56 a  very economical exercise so far as I am concerned!

    Very nice indeed Barry.

You are always at a disadvantage if you're trying to sort a kit that been damaged or messed up, and this isn't a simple kit to begin with.  So yours looks a great job!

I've always used HMRS Pressfix transfers (and I grab any I see!) but I'm thinking a'm going to have to convert to waterslide.  Not had much luck with them yet.

    All the best, Dave.

The cylinder lining should be orange, it looks red in the photo. Yes, the splasher tops should be green, only the Western Region painted them black (except on the County Class). However, ‘always’ means ‘mostly’, and ‘never’ means ‘except sometimes’.

    Hello Ian,

Thanks very much for the info.  Black-looking splasher tops are probably due to lack of cleaning compared to the faces!

As for the cylinder lining, there are quite a few colour photos of SR locos in BR green with black cylinders.  Often the colour cannot be clearly identified, but where it is it SEEMS to show red.

For instance, in this photo of 30856 ex-works, the lining looks distinctly red compared to the orange boiler lining.  Several photos of Nelsons, Schools and rebuilt Bullieds also seem to show this.  Whether this is a photographic effect, or an Eastleigh "signature" I wouldn't like to say!

By the way, I'm reading your book and practising my airbrushing; and I regularly look at your galleries for inspiration!

    Many thanks,

Thanks Andy - but what is "PAK" ?  What is the "other stuff" in it ?

There are various quotes above that what Slaters supply is actually MEK/Butanone yet others say MEKPAK is different and I'm sure I have seen claims that over the years Slaters have changed the formula.

    .

Quite so Mike, MekPak is definitely not MEK/Butanone.  MEK/Butanone will fix C&L track components, but MekPak won't touch them.

Therefore the assumption that MekPak is less harmful than MEK/butanone.

  5. Thanks for all the "likes" gents.

There is a question of the paint on the tops of the splashers:  Of the colour photos I've seen, some appear green, others black, and some indistinguishable.  I don't suppose there is a definitive answer, so I've done the one that meets the firebox green and the front one black.

The Hornby model has them all green.

  6. Thanks very much for all the advice guys, looks like I'm stuck with the smaller bottles unless I switch to MEK or Butanone, with their added hazards.

Having to mail order everything now that my local model shop has gone, also having a shelf full of empty MekPak bottles ready for decanting (I get through a lot)

Just had confirmation from Slaters that they are no longer supplying in larger quantities, mainly due to the large number and cost of tins they would have to order, and the subsequent storage space needed.

    Thanks again,

Not quite an actor, not everyone had heard of André Previn when he had a guest spot, but his willingness to be part of a silly sketch must have similarly enhanced his image.

As it did for most of the A-list celebrities who queued up for some ritual humiliation at the hands of Eric and Ernie.

I loved the bit during Cleopatra;  Glenda nearly lost it when the bust of Caesar suddenly looked up at her, she wasn't expecting that.

The sketch is  Here  and the incident is at about 5mins 50

  8. Most of the issues have now been sorted out, Wedmore is looking very fresh and running nicely.  Still some scenic refurbishment to be done (isn't there always?)

And the Exeter Gauge 0 Group show is tomorrow!  (see links in the post above)

When does "partially started" become "partially finished" I wonder...
