Do you know how wide it is?

    Hi,

The baseboards for Charmouth are half a metre wide, just under 20 inches.  The original layout was on three boards 1m x 0.5m, including the fiddle yard.  However that arrangement soon proved inadequate so a "roundhouse" extension was added  This however made the FY disproportionately long for the layout, so the whole end was rebuilt with the 38-inch cassette fiddle yard.  The addition of the "six-inch extension" at the station end brought the total length to 14'6" feet, including the FY.

The reason for the somewhat odd measurements was that it originally had to fit into a space a fraction over 3 metres long at home, and the extensions were for exhibition use.

The plan should make it clear:

  2. Well now the dust has settled a bit after the Warley weekend, I want to say how well I thought it went, and everything (for us with Bridport Town at any rate) ran very smoothly.

The Warley team were very well organised, efficient and helpful, as were the NEC staff.

I even found the Voyage online access system quick and easy to use (leading me to think I'd done it wrong...) and getting in and out was no problem at all.

Hotels and catering were very good, the layout behaved itself and was much admired, altogether an excellent if  tiring weekend.

As for some of the criticisms, I'm not sure if I was at the same show.  As an exhibitor you don't get a lot of time to get round and see everything, but everything I did see was very good indeed.  Most layouts were new to me, but with some old favorites to admire as well.  I was looking forward to seeing South Pelaw for the first time, and was very impressed.

One or two layouts looked a bit gloomy, not having their own lighting, but I was pleased to see that the hall lighting has dramatically improved since my last visit.   The white, presumably LED, lighting having replaced the horrible old orange lights that killed any colour on your layout.

The only problems we did have were being stationary on the M5 for two hours on Friday, and me not being able to get Monday morning off work...

My thanks operators Mudmagnet and Ray Norwood (of this Forum) and John.C (not of this Forum)

And thanks to to everyone involved in the organisation, and everyone who came and said nice things about Bridport!

No, I'm the handsome bald headed bloke with a grey beard and glasses.

Maybe that's the common factor to enjoying Warley.

I used to have a regular conversation with one of my regular operators (now deceased)

"Theres a guy looking for you"

    "Oh yes, who is it?"

"Can't remember his name, but we see him at lots of shows"

"Ok, what does he look like?"

    "Err, beard, glasses, beer-gut,"

    Narrows it down a lot.....

Paul - over on the Narrow Gauge Railway Modelling OnLine Forum (NGRM), David @DLT posted photos almost daily showing how he developed new areas of the backscene and took on board the advice from many fellow modellers until he got it just about right so you can't see where the real buildings and scenery merge into the backscene. Nothing like a deadline to get things moving and thankfully the redevelopment was all completed in time. Perhaps David could add some more photos on the Bridport topic here for the benefit of a wider audience. The use of mirrors at each end also make the layout look much bigger than it really is and means he's had to detail all the parts you don't always see but they show up in the reflection.

    .

Thanks very much for the prod Mike, yes I WILL be adding photos to the Bridport Topic here.  The trouble was that I was working against the clock and didn't have time to post on TWO Forums (Fora?)

Working against the clock is a mixed blessing.  It can concentrate the mind into actually getting something done and finished, but can also lead to stress, rushing and making mistakes.  Whats the expression?  "More haste less speed"?

And then someone mentioned something about a photo not proving trains actually moved on a layout…

Err yes...  Many years ago a magazine photographer told me that he would be sent to photograph layouts for publication.

He was interested to see them running, but more often than you might think, he was told they didn't work

Great photos. It’s a bit more overgrown now but a few years ago I did trundle along it in the van one day.

Looks like I wasn’t the only one either…

Last time I passed there was a very large log/tree trunk across the siding to discourage drivers.  The line was concreted to allow tractors to pull or push wagons along it.

You may be interested to know that the mill has been completely removed, the river reinstated and the area undergone an award-winning "Regeneration".

Some interesting articles HERE  including an aerial film of the location.  Looks like a lot of the internal rail sidings are still there.

Its not rocket science - if your staff feel undervalued, bullied and generally treated like a leaf blower treats leaves then that is going to manifest itself in poor customer service.

All across the industry front line staff are feeling utterly demoralised in the face of DFT intransigence and bosses whose mission seems to be to brown nose the politicians or Whitehall mandarins for the sake of their own careers while the industry and its infrastructure continues to fall apart.

Good managers like Adrian Shooter, Criss Green and Mark Hopwood know this and its why if they are left to do their thing then you will find by and large the organisations they used to run treated their staff well

I used to work in an establishment that carried out research in this area, and results consistently showed this.  As you say its not rocket science.

But everywhere you look the opposite is happening.  Then employers complain there are staff-shortages, poor service, strikes etc!
