  2. I'm a bit reluctant to try a reset. Many years ago (in 2011 to be precise) Pauliebanger said "Normally, re-sets via CV8 should only be considered as a last resort not a routine task. This is especially true of sound decoders. Although they are designed to retain all of the sound samples, this is not guaranteed. Most likely scenario if things go wrong is that the the sounds will still be on the decoder, but not accessible, or available on different F keys". I don't know if that still holds good.
  3. I have a Bachmann class 24 factory fitted with sound. I bought it new last September and I understand it is fitted with a Zimo MX644 decoder. Because I had to rewheel it I haven't used it much until recently and when I have it's worked really well. However, I've now been experimanting with some of the sounds on offer This has resulted in some anomalies. For example, pressing F8 and then F1 is supposed to produce a "cold start". Indeed it does, and it sounds good, but unfortunately the loco then refuses to move, with or without sound, and the only solution is to unplug my Power Cab and start again. Once that's been done, press F1 and all is well. Then there are F5 (on light engine, off heavy train) and F6 (coasting). Try to start off with F5 engaged and the result is the same as F8/F1 - no movement, reboot needed. Engage F5 or F6 while the loco is running and it will continue to run, but it won't stop, either by pressing F2 (active brake) or the red button. Instead the loco has to be grabbed and a reboot is again necessary to getthings working again. All the other F buttons seem to work as intended and lighting works as intended. I don't imagine I'll use F5, F6 or F8 much, but I'm concerned that they're not working and that there may be other problems. Has anyone any ideas as to what might be happening and if the problems can be resolved?

  12. I've never used lacquer paints - in fact, they're not very common over here, at least not in the model railway world. I know of Tamiya lacquers and Mr Hobby lacquers, both of which are available in the UK. The latter are not commonly stocked though can be easily found online - correct me if I'm wrong, people! The situation is further complicated by there being solvent lacquers and acrylic lacquers - I think that Mr Hobby Colors are solvcent based. I'm encouraged to try some as they're clearly highly thought of.

  14. I like a trigger airbrush as well, though perhaps a conventional push-button one is better fro fine spraying in awkward places. Maybe that's why I'v got both kinds. As to enamels, the secret is to thin them appropriately. I use white spirit (mineral spirits in the USA) as a thinner (as did the late and much missed Mick Bonwick) and mix it woth enamel paint until the right consistency is reached. Basically, add thinner a few drops at the time with a pipette or something similar. Repeat this, stirring each time, until the paint mix has achived the consistency of semi skimmed milk. George Dent suggests that you check each time by dipping a spatula into the mix and when the paint falls from it in small self contained blobs it's ready for use. If it just runs straight off the spatula it's too thin. Contrary to your experience, I only use enamels - I've heard so many stories of clogging that I'm reluctant to let acrylics anywhere near my airbrush

  16. It's a wee bit late for Burns Night, but this is a cracking version of one of his best: Ye see yon birkie ca’d a lord, Wha struts, an’ stares, an’ a’ that, Tho’ hundreds worship at his word, He’s but a coof for a’ that. For a’ that, an’ a’ that, His ribband, star, an’ a’ that, The man o’ independent mind, He looks an’ laughs at a’ that.
