  1. We've got friends who have wholeheartedly bought into the consumerist nightmare, sorry, dream and spend every penny they earn in order to keep up with the Joneses and their rich friends...and they are up to their top lips in debt to have it all right now. The instant some money is freed up, they find something else to spend it on, usually very expensive hi-fi, a bigger car or yet another kitchen remodelling. It never occurs to them to salt it away or put it into their stratospheric mortgage in order to kill it early...that wouldn't produce something tangible the husband in particular could point to and brag about. The upshot being they have a beautiful house full of all the latest top-of-the-range gizmos, a BMW X6M in the driveway and three fancy holidays a year. The problem is that none of it is really theirs...it all belongs to banks and finance companies. On the other hand, we own everything, house, car etc., outright and we're paying for the new extension from our savings. They look better off than we are but they haven't a bean in the bank and are actually, in real terms, broke. If either of them were made redundant, they'd lose everything, house included.
  2. Indeed. If you couldn't afford it you either saved up for it or did without. And if you did without there was no stigma attached, unlike today where, if you don't have the latest gadget in this year's colour, you're cut out of people's lives and shunned.
  3. You're right. This is from the http://www.trix.co.uk/ site... The motor is quite different from the one in that pug. It looks like it might be a Romford...
  4. I recognise them too. Something tells me it's from a loco made by British Trix?
  5. Good design costs money and since the mighty dollar is God, the car makers aren't interested. Mind you, it can still happen and penny-pinching trends can be bucked. The MOB in Switzerland recently took delivery of these rather attractive dual gauge trains. Designed by Pininfarina and built by Stadler. Seriously expensive but presumably they thought it was an investment worth making.
  6. Chri$t that's ugly. What is it with car designers these days? Are they all blind or followers of Picasso? That abomination reminds me of the blue Pullman double ender which sat on one bogie we saw on this thread a few weeks back. Just as stupid and pointless.
  7. I've got a photo somewhere of one of these sitting beside a wooden bodied hex dash Glasgow tramcar in 1955. The contrast in styling was akin to placing the starship Enterprise next to a Sopwith Camel.
  8. Then there's the second half of that joke...What changes from green to red at the push of a button and whistles? Kermit in a liquidiser pretending he doesn't care.
  9. That's someone trying to jump on the bandwagon but without the skill to do it to any kind of decent standard.
  10. The description is downright illiterate!
  11. Not quite Ebay madness, but madness nonetheless. Are there no depths of embarrassing crassness that capitalism will not sink to? A loco that plays "God Save the King" as it trundles round your layout? Get me a bucket!
  12. And the point of it is...?
  13. There isn't a Lima loco anywhere or in any condition that's worth this much!
  14. What are these guys on? Is the box what you couple up to the coaches and is therefore more important than the wrecked Brush Type 4 wot's in it?
  15. I used to work beside someone with hair like Crystal Tipps and it earned her the nickname from those of us old enough to remember the character. The reference was completely lost on the girl who was in her mid twenties. She actually thought it was charming!
  16. The Sam's Trains review of it on YouTube is hilarious and shows it up to be the spectacularly awful junk it seems and which is worthy of an instant visit to the plastic recycling bin. The cynicism in its construction is solid gold in that it's not even pretending to be a relevant prototype. It's just some American garbage that looks like a rebranded refugee from a Casey Jones merchandising deal that went t!ts up. Also, to call it hand crafted and painted is a lie right up there with Trump's finest!
  17. £450 for something that doesn't run?? This boy's a fool!
  18. And I think you're missing the point of this thread. Faux outrage is its M.O.
  19. That is probably one of the most diabolically cynical marketing rip-offs I've ever seen. That thing is an utter pile of sh!t and doesn't deserve to exist at all. Whoever dreamt this garbage up should be in the Tower: I'm no royalist but that carp is definitely disrespectful to the Queen's memory, created as it was by people who cared nothing for anything but the cash opportunity afforded them by her death. The description of this junk is actionable under the Trades Description Act and the price is nothing short of robbery!
  20. And only in one direction too!
  21. Agreed. Except for that little box, it does read that way. He's clearly a chancer.
  22. Afraid not. He has (or at least he had ten of them, now he's down to two), but they're $144 each. There's a tick box just above the price to indicate how many (!) you want.
  23. More antiquated motor madness! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/295645475845?epid=7059333686&hash=item44d5d7f405:g:7uQAAOSwRJhkQUPp&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4EUVATdp1xnmluxTlTadqAVw4%2F5b73VVtil8zvjoFRHmLUBcuZgCbAEI%2FoOdYzjbPYiACthvQWzJ4q0yX1ia1OdrdiioUV6ObF0Hfi9r445hwo%2BlYugq8dK5fLG8bDj2V1HOIWU25Oq2gtm13Yd9XyUV7fvPj9%2Fj0GGqpZtqArSoDXhNApZ8eTp2qf2C1jFh%2F4Gh549Nj7yJLPs6bjCnTJgIo6V95MjSpSfBZb458kf099uBYPQqFpbPXWU3s7ZeMSZyU%2BKYixQAepI1pdIuN9uXy1TRxkv7p10fPSB1FzHD|tkp%3ABk9SR5y3oa30YQ
  24. That thing's hideous. There's no way I'd pay anything like £1,500 for it!
