  1. I think there should be the word "alleged" in the title of this topic. The UK still has the concept of innocent until proven guilty1.

    1. Does not apply to those writing gutter press headlines.

He did actually own up to it, therefore I think "alleged" is unnecessary.

  2. Don't blame "train station" on the Americans! There's enough crap over here without foisting that one!

In fact I'd go so far to say that blaming bad English on Americans, in general, is a way of washing the collective English hands of perceived bad English originating within the sceptered isle.

    Cheers, Pete.

And a failure to appreciate that English is constantly evolving whether we like it or not. That's why it is one of the most vibrant world languages.

It has constantly imported and assimilated words and phrases from other tongues and popular usage.

If it didn't evolve it would be as dead as Latin is as an everyday modern language.

  3. TiVo is the most marvellous thing ever! I still have one that I bought around 2001 and at the business of recording programmes it still beats every other box except for Virgins new TiVo box. Sky+ is a joke in comparison.

You can record things by name, genre, director, actor and pretty much anything you can thing of. And it will never ever forget to record. Even if your programme is off the air for a couple of years which beats all the other boxes' crude series links hands down.

    Wrong.

If you don't cancel the series link on a Foxsat it will stay in the program until the next episode appears, whenever. At least it does for some months - I haven't tried longer.

  4. I found my old Lima one out from it's storage box and note that in GWR livery it too has brown ends!

It's not up to the standard of the new Hornby model but still looks OK for it's time.

  5. I've also got a Humax Foxsat HDR which is pretty well recommended as well, but it is for Freesat HD satellite reception.

Got all the bells and whistles and is about £250 now, but you do need a dish with a twin LNB to use it properly.

It can record two programmes whilst you watch a third!

I actually use this more than the aforementioned Panasonic Freeview PVR these days as the picture quality from satellite is much better than Freeview.

That was my point, I'm fairly sure a mate of ,mine had a DVD recorder (no HDD) that did live pause, which sounded to me like a quick way of killing the DVD drive.

I think you can do live pause on the DMR -EX75 on DVD but only with DVD-RAM disks - never tried it though.

  6. After rescanning my tv due to the digital switchover my thoughts have turned to the possible purchase of a DVD recorder. As videos are old hat I was wondering what I should be going for spec wise.My wife likes to record soaps and the kids like to play dvds so I would imagine a no frills player may suit.I haven't got 300 sheets to spend.

    Any recommends ?

Panasonic machines come highly recommended, there are several available starting around £170 going up to £400+ with Freeview twin tuners, Blu-ray etc in the top end machines. You might be very lucky and find one of the top end ones close to your price.

I have had a DMR EX75 for some years and it's great (Freeview with HDD and DVD recorder)

    Keith

PS in reply to the others most have HDDs these days

DVD drives pack up really fast in a domestic environment.

    Really?

  7. When I went to New York in 2000 the immigration people objected to my putting English or British as my nationality and insisted that I put UK down

Bit OT: I found the immigration staff there (well Newark actually) some of the most humourless arrogant people going. Made German immigration seem positively friendly!

  8. It was in use long before then even................... Along with mammy, chucky egg, puff puff, baa lamb and moo cow. If people want to talk infantile, good luck to them.

I think that is being facetious, those examples are more child speak than everyday conversation.

The people I have heard using "train station" were definitely not being infantile even if you wish to bring it to that level.

Maybe we should go back to calling railways railroad or waggonway instead.

    Re annoying phrases:

How about the announcements that getting increasingly "sorry" as the delay mounts

Firstly: We are sorry for the delay to the xxxx service.

Then: We are extremely sorry for the delay to the xxxx service. (greater delay)

    etc.

I half expect the announcer to say he is going to commit har-kiri when ithe delay exceeds a certain amount.

  9. How about people when carrying out a project saying " I am going on a journey to ......"

Laura Tobin on the weather: "Yes, it will rain tomorrow" Why not just "It will rain tomorrow"

And people who criticise the use of "train station" when it has been in use for maybe 50 years or more (at least I can remember it from the 1960s)

    Keith

  10.

It's something to do with the psychology of not being able to hear both sides of the conversation, but I can't explain it further.

It seems to be worse with mobiles than land-line phones. Nearly everybody seems to shout at a mobile when they would speak more normally to an ordinary telephone.

    Keith

  11. I assume these people that use mobiles in quiet zones are also the morons that drive with them glued to their ear and sit in a cinema texting all the way through the film. Rules and regulations don't apply to them because they are perfect. You are the one out of order.

  12. I think, if it's a non-Canon cartridge, some models now have a built in sensor to prevent resetting. I had the same thing with my Canon MP492 and ended up having to buy Canon originals. :banghead:

As I said, the cartridges have been re-filled. 10ml in the black and 4ml in each of the colours. They are not replacements. The black already showed as empty but the colour still showed a little remaining, but even that now shows empty even though it is almost full.

It does not affect the printing, that is fine, if anything the black is now more dense, however the status on both shows empty.

    Keith

  13. Hi all

Does anybody use a iP2700 or similar Canon printer and has used a cartridge re-fill kit (not new cartridges)

If so can you re-set the ink status monitor. I've tried all suggestions found on the web and it still shows empty for both.

    Cheers

    Keith

  14. Talking about scams. Does anybody know how to get rid of the claim texts which I keep getting- i.e. "Get £3750 for that motor accident you had"

I assume they are just random to any mobile as my wife, who doesn't even have a driving licence, also has started to get them and her phone is a PAYG cash sale and nobody has the number.

I have tried sending stop to the number the are supposed to originate from but it doesn't do anything.

    Keith
