  1. Craig Thank you for your help. I've a copy of Don's book, but must have missed the photo you mention and I'll have another look tonight. I have some of Dave Larkin's books, but I'll search out a few more at the Peterborough exhibition over the weekend. Time I respray the wagon I have and letter it, Hornby will have brought out a BR version - still for me the enjoyment of model railways is the research and building/converting models to fit a specific geographical area and timescale !! Regards Paul
  2. Paul Thank you for your reply - I certainly had the impression your services had been "officially" used by manufacturers and read too much into your comment about Hornby not issuing (yet) the BR black version. I have spoken to a number of people in various society's, serched a number of photo lists and looked at photos for sale at various exhibitions - and will be doing so this weekend at Peterborough - but so far, other than a couple of Frank Church photos - which unfortunatly are too "front 3/4" with number/text not visible, not found a clear photo! Regards Paul G
  3. What makes you think I haven't already looked! The reason I asked Paul the question direct is that having looked at his web site there are no c1950s BR photos. However I know he has helped manufactures with photos etc and wondered if he had advised Hornby on a "black" version, hence his comment and could pass on any information. Regards Paul
  4. Paul Can you advise if any photographs of a Trout wagon in BR black livery are available with the lettering clearly visable including any "Return to XXX" details? Regards PaulG
  5. PMP & Coachman Thank you for your comments. Another variation Hornby can introduce in due course. Regards Paul
  6. "Steam in East Anglia A Colour Portfolio" by R.C. (Dick) Riley on page 38 includes a photograph which, I believe includes one of these horseboxes. The photograph is taken Laxfield Station on the Mid-Suffolk line and is dated 22 July 1952. The horse box is numbered W 26, with the number at the bottom left hand side on the fodder/store door, not as shown on the Hornby vehicle. I guess the livery is the original BR crimson lake, but it is very dirty and looks more brown-red colour! Has Hornby got the BR lettering position correct on its model? Regards Paul
  7. Thanks to Blue Max for picking up a typo in the list I posted. Dan will in fact be re-introducing both: DS 186 NER 52ft Clerestory locker comp Dia.7 and DS 187 NER 52ft Clerestory 5 comp bk third Dia. 76 Regards Paul

    Dapol Class 21/29

With the recent release of the Craven DMU and Class 15, and the release of the W&M railbus, Derby light-weight DMU and now Class 21 due next year, the East Anglia railway modeller is well served for diesel power. (just need a few GE steam locos!) In respect of the Class 21, when new, D6110-9 were allocated to 30A Stratford and D6120-37 to 32B Ipswich. Dr Ian C Allen took a number of photos of the Class 21 in East Anglia, albeit on the list at http://www.transport...collection.html only one is shown, "ref D498 D6124 tn frt Beccles". Additional photos are in his book Diesels in East Anglia ISBN 86093 106 5 (1980) The pilot batch D6100-9 when new being allocated to Hornsey. Paul

John Thank you for the comment - does anyone produce such lettering? Paul

    Hornby Thompson L1

I'm using the LNER yellow loco/Gill Sans Sheet 4a (it's a PC Models sheet prior to HMRS taking over, but from other sheets I have the lettering has not been changed) This morning I quickly added the "0" to illustrate the problem! The bunkerside number is a better match than the front bufferbeam number. Regards Paul

Thank you for your comments: Bernard Lamb "Srange that you find HMRS do not match. I have done a Brit and a Clan by........." The lettering on the Hornby L1 model is LNER yellow unshaded Gil Sans, not the cream British Railways font. Like you, I have renumbered without a problem a Hornby Clan to 72009 Clan Stewart, which ran for a month on the GE. Coachmann - the problem with the Gil Sans on the HMRS LNER sheet is the unshaded yellow Gil Sans is of a different size to that used by Hornby, only slightly but ........ A solution is to remove all the Hornby cabside numbers and replace with HMRS numbers, but the Hornby lettering doesn't come off as easy or as well as the Bachmann lettering using Meths - and I only want to change one digit! I have considered overlaying the Hornby numbers "6771" with the HMRS numbers and then adding the 0! But it still doesn't resolve the LNER unshaded yellow Gil Sans lettering on the front & back buffer, which are not on any of the HMRS sheets I have. As you say, nothing is easy! Regards Paul

    Hornby Thompson L1

Has anyone tried to renumber 67717? To turn the Hornby model into a GE loco, I need to renumber the loco as 67710, which was for a time allocated to Ipswich and changing the 7 to a 0 appeared a simple task. However, the HMRS transfers do not match the cab-side number by Hornby, either in height or width of the number and nor does the sheet include the buffer beam style of number. I have looked at both Fox and Modelmaster web sites and e-mail mailed both firms (no response so far) to try and establish if the numbers they produce match those by Hornby. (i.e. cab side numbers are Gil Sans 4mm high and buffer beam numbers 2mm high). Any help much appriciated. Regards Paul
  14. I had a chat with Dan this afternoon and he is very pleased at the way the re-release of the first batch of 4mm models is going. Thank you for the support. Dan is now working on the 7mm range for the Gauge 0 Guild Telford show in September, before returning to the 4mm horse boxes. Regards Paul
  15. Just a quick up date to say Dan is on programme to re-release some of his 4mm GE carriages later this month/early August. The next issue will be some of his 4mm horse box kits, which he hopes to re-release in the autumn. As usual either e-mail me or write direct to Dan (with an SAE please). Regards Paul

David It's only the LNER/BR works built locos with the curved running plate that carried the green livery. All the contractor built, split running plate locos were painted lined black. Regards Paul
  17. The note about horseboxes was in response to comments earlier in this thread; a quick note to Dan will give him some idea of interets. I will of course keep the Forum updated and have also received a couple of PMs. Regards Paul
  18. Sorry, I should have made it clear, orders direct and made payable to "D&S Models" at the address shown. NB production starts June/July. Regards Paul
  19. Further to my earlr message, I have today received the following from Dan: "D&S Models are to re-introduce a selection of kits from the 4mm range. These have not been in production for sometime and will be concentrated on prototypes from the LNER and its constituents, many of these found their way into East Anglia following the cascading of coaching stock from the late 1930's and lasted into the first decade of British Railways. Not all the kits previously available will be made and production will be on a batch basis subject to demand and it is not intended to keep a stock. Initial production will commence in June/July and will be the following: GER 50ft Gangway Stock DS120 Third Dia 419 DS121 Bk Third Dia 541 DS133 Composite Dia 227 DS311 LNER D30E Restaurant (Post 1932) Specification generally as originally issued, etched brass construction, white metal fittings, vac formed roof, but excluding wheels and couplings. Price £45 plus £1.90 P&P to the address below. The next batch of kits in 4mm will be from the horse box range, for a list of these please send SAE to: D&S Models 46 The Street Wallington nr Baldock Herts SG7 6SW As Dan is not on e-mail/internet, I can pass on any comments etc. posted on this Forum. Regards Paul
  20. As I said in the first note, at present only GER carriages are being considered, of which Dan issued a number of types. It isn't Dan's intension to go back into full production; he's got a 4mm layout of Newport to build plus the 7mm range to maintain. Jonathan: I've just spoken to Dan about a horse box and he will see what is possible. There will be time for you to save your "pennies"! Regards Paul
  21. Would a horsebox be of any interest!? Looking at the D & S list there was LNER Dia 67 Horse box and LNER Dia 191 horse box. Regards Paul
  22. Jonathan Dan is currently putting together a list for the next issue of the GERS News, which I'll also copy to this Forum thread. Any particular specific "wish list"? Regards Paul
  23. Good news for GER 4mm scale modellers. Speaking to Dan Pinnock yesterday evening (and he has agreed for me to add this note on the Forum) he has confirmed he will be re-introducing some of his 4mm range of GER carriage kits. Depending on demand, this may extend to re-introduction of certain other stock - as usual drop Dan a letter for anything specific as he is not on e-mail (usual courtesy of an SAE if you require a reply) - or via this thread, as I do speak with Dan on a regular basis. Dan is in the early stages of building a 4mm layout of Newport Station on the Cambridge main line - need one say more! He would welcome any help with photos etc of the station. Regards Paul

    Hornby Clan

From colour photos of BR standards I've seen, I would suggest red backing to nameplates with the original BR livery and lion/wheel symbol. Black backing for post 1956 BR livery with the lion/crown heraldic crest. It has been noted that some main works eventually reverted back to painting the nameplate backing in the more popular red! As usual, a colour photo of the loco and period you are modelling is the only sure way. Regards Paul
  25. The first notice I have is from the Great Eastern Railway dated September 12th 1913. (Instruction No. 1110, 1913.) "Edges of Station Platforms To Be Kept Whitened During Foggy Weather. Notice to Station Masters, Inspectors, Foremen-Porters and others concerned. In future, as a precaution during foggy weather the edges of Station Platfroms must be kept whitened with whitewash; the work to be perfomed by the Station Staff, as required. F.G. Randall Superintendent of the Line." Regards Paul
