  1. Very impressed with the model. After a few running laps of the layout, I "failed" the L1 on the eight coach Thompson non-vestibule excursion set and substituted the J15, which hauled with ease. I'll have to try it on the "East Anglian" set, to see if it can repeat the events of 2nd September 1948 when 65448, the Chelmsford pilot, had to replace the failed express loco on the up express! Needs a well detailed crew on the footplate, the addition of rails at the front of the tender to support a tarpaulin, bit of weathering - I note the comment about the hand rail knobs along the boiler, but it's not an issue for me. 3. There is a good photographs of 70001 Lord Hurcomb on the down Norfolkman passing 70013 Oliver Cromwell on a Whitmoor-Norwich Victoria freight train at Trowse Upper Junction. As with many of Dr Ian C Allen's photographs it is not dated, but J69 68555 is on the end of the freight and this loco was at Norwich from 1956 to 1958. Dr Allen also photographed 70007 Coeur-de-Lion on the same working, possibly at an earlier date as the loco is in good external livery and carries the first BR emblem. In Peter Swinger's booklet "Britannia No 70000" he includes the East Anglia Winter 1954/55 timetable diagrams and as an example Diagram 1 Weekdays was: 4.24am Liverpool St to Norwich via Cambridge 9.45am Norwich to Liverpool St via Ipswich 2.24pm Liverpool St to Norwich via Cambridge 7.20pm Class D goods Norwich Wensum to Temple Mills via Cambridge. Hope the above is of interest and would suggest in East Anglia from new, the locos were used as MT. Paul
  4. There is a photo (by J.P Mullett) of the locomotive in Dick Riley's book "Great Eastern Album" (Ian Allan 1968). Detailed caption part of which reads: " On withdrawal in 1938 it was sold and run under its own steam to Gartsherrie Works in Lanarkshire. .....................J15 ran to collect coal for the coke ovens, by virtue of running powers over former North British Railway lines..............loco lined black livery, polished dome cover and lettered BAIRDS & SCOTTISH STEEL LTD................the photograph is dated 1958; loco scrapped in 1960 and the works closed in 1967.........." Other locos in Scotland were of course the unrebuilt B12 4-6-0s and about 20 GE 0-6-0T locos and seven F4 and F7 2-4-2T classes. Paul

    Hornby D16/3

Greg In Stanley Jenkins book "The Wells-next-the-Sea branch, The Oakwood Press page 55 onwards he says: "Locomotives seen on the branch in the 1920s and 1930s included former GER T26 (LNER E4) 2-4-0......................J15 class on passenger and goods....................J17s and to a lesser extent J19s...................Claud Hamilton 4-4-0s appeared sporadically in the years before World War II. and by the later 1930s D15s, D16/2s and D16/3s............. First rule of model railways is it's my railway I'll run what I like; but in this case it looks like Stanley has also given you a reason! In his book photos in the 1930s show E4, J15, D13 and J21 (eight of the class were allocated to Norwich between 1935 to 1947). Yeadon's Register on the class also says "From the mid 1930s the Clauds began to penetrate the rural branch lines of Norfolk..................." Regards Paul

    Hornby D16/3

Hornby have released an image of the new D16, 2524 with suffix E. The image is the left hand side of the loco so the E is next to the cab steps handrail. There is a photograph of 2524 in Yeadons page 93, but the photo is the right hand side of the loco and it shows a prefix E, therefore, again the E is at the edge of cab by handrails. I know in early BR days some locos had the E as a prefix and others as a suffix, but my guess is Hornby have got it wrong and the E should be a prefix to the number, unless others know better or a photo of the left hand side exists to prove Hornby correct. Paul
  7. None, but may get around to doing a streamlined B17 Paul
  8. The is a very good photograph of a Trout in Odd Corners of the Eastern. Eric Sawford ISBN978-0-7524-5808-3, page 97. My copy is The History Press reprint of 2010 and the book was first published in 2001. The photograph confirms previous discussions that the marking "Trout" must have been a later addition. The lettering is clear: DE470221, 25T, ED Empty to Appleby slagheap Stanton Scunthorpe and I passed this information to Simon Kohler at Hornby back in January 2013 as at that date Hornby had been unable to find an early BR period photograph of the wagon. Hornby K1

They were a common site in East Anglia with 62004/11-20, 62031-40, 62051-55 and 62066-70 all allocated to the GE Section. With the Claud and J15 also planned it's a very good year for the GE modeller. Paul
  10. I was under the impression that Bachmann were to announce the J15 in their future plans, so all is not lost! Paul

    Hornby D16/3

The Hornby announcement was a surprise in that it included three GE Section locos. Also strange that Hornby didn't announce (1) 62614 which was out-shopped in LNER green with BR number/emblem, (2) 8900 "Frederick the Great" / "Claud Hamilton" or (3) 62546 which carried the name "Claud Hamilton after 8900 was withdrawn in 1947. Especially as Hornby seem to be attracted by loco names. I see Hornby have announced R3235 - British Railways (full lettering) D16/3 No. 2524; there is a photo of this loco in Yeadon's Register Vol 14 page 93 and the loco had the pre-fix "E", which I hope Hornby have noticed! Now Hornby has both the small and large GER tender, it opens up scope for the larger GER freight locos J19 and J20 and smaller E4 and J17 in the future; the advantage of Holdens standardisation. Paul
  12. Paul Your comments above are of interest as I'm building a model of Colchester Station c1950s. Having looked at a large number of photographs taken at Colchester and the local area I've never found any which clearly show any cement wagons. Have you any recollection as to the traffic flows from the works? Any help would be much appriciated. Paul
  13. Also in 00 perhaps I could add: GER/LNER E4, J17 and one of the larger freight locos J19 or J20 and how about a Barclay 0-4-0DM Class 01? Paul

    Heljan Class 16

The book "Diesel Pioneers" by D.N. Clough has good information and photos of class members at Stratford, Doncaster (test trains run to Grantham), on the Brighton line crossing Ouse Viaduct and at Woodford. Photo of D8405 07/06/1959 on Hertford East to Southend Sunday excursion in "Aspects of East Anglian Diesels The Early Years Part 1" J.D. Mann Paul
  16. Shaddow You will find a lot of information, drawings and photographs of the 1865 architecture in the GERS Journal and on the Society web site www.gersociety.org.uk Paul

Stewart Anyone modelling East Anglia railways even in the early BR days, say c1955, needs about 60% of their loco fleet to be of GER design/built. At Cambridge (31A) for example, of the 103 allocated the split was 69% GER, 17% LNER, 7% GCR, 4% LMSR and 3% NER. We need more than just a Claud and a J15! Paul
  18. The Great Eastern Railway Society Journal 64 October 1990 had a short article on the station and there are track plans etc in H.I. Quayle & G.T. Bradbury book "The Felixstowe Railway" published by The Oakwood Press. The line is also covered in the Vic Mitchell Middleton Press series of books. Paul
  19. Ian I had a discussion with Dan this evening and he probably can help with the window etches as he does various odd etches to hand, just let him know what windows you require. (Mr D. Pinnock, 46 The Street, Wallington, nr Baldock, Hertfordshire, SG7 6SW) The next items Dan is considering re-releasing are some of his ex GE, NE and GN non-passenger coaching stock, but he needs to check the situation with the various component parts before producing a list. He would like to re-release some of pre-grouping 6-wheel carriage stock, but with an apparent move by modellers to the BR period (see latest wish lists) he is not sure how commercially viable this would be. Regards Paul
  20. Ian I owe Dan a phone call; I'll try and contact in the next few days and ask. Regards Paul
  21. The October issue (148) of the Great Eastern Railway Society Journal has a nice colour cover photo of E79962 at Cambridge Station being hauled by experimental blue livery Brush type 2 D5578 in 1958, after failing on the Mildenhall branch. Regards Paul
  22. Coachman, thank you for your reply; on the basis that LMS stock working excursions into East Anglia in the 1950s seamed to be a mixed "bag" (and the Dapol model looks good & good value) I purchased one of the kits, together with a pair of Bachmann bogies to replace those with the kit, as they appear better. Regards Paul
  23. In the early BR period say upto c1958 would this stock have been used on excursions from the Midlands into East Anglia? I note in photos of excursions to Clacton etc LMS stock is used, but as most photos tend to be front 3/4 of the loco, identifing the carriages is not easy. Regards Paul
  24. Craig Thank you for your help. I've a copy of Don's book, but must have missed the photo you mention and I'll have another look tonight. I have some of Dave Larkin's books, but I'll search out a few more at the Peterborough exhibition over the weekend. Time I respray the wagon I have and letter it, Hornby will have brought out a BR version - still for me the enjoyment of model railways is the research and building/converting models to fit a specific geographical area and timescale !! Regards Paul
  25. Paul Thank you for your reply - I certainly had the impression your services had been "officially" used by manufacturers and read too much into your comment about Hornby not issuing (yet) the BR black version. I have spoken to a number of people in various society's, serched a number of photo lists and looked at photos for sale at various exhibitions - and will be doing so this weekend at Peterborough - but so far, other than a couple of Frank Church photos - which unfortunatly are too "front 3/4" with number/text not visible, not found a clear photo! Regards Paul G
