  1. Nice looking coaches there Moz. Dave Studely, king of teak!
  2. BR's smokebox numerals were supposed to be in Gil Sans. The LNER adopted Gill Sans characters with curly 6's and 9's whereas BR adopted the Gil Sans variant with straight leg 6's and 9's. The Eastern Region went and used curly characters on many smokebox plates! If you obtain etched plates from a reputable company there shouldn't be a problem. I use Modelmaster waterslide transfers, which can be cut up to make any number required.

    I hate wasps

If it is of any consolation, wasp stripes............ I hate 'em to peices! Masking over radiators and other detail has never been a fun job and it aint got any easier. I brush Mascol into awkward bits of the masking tape where it will not press down over fine detail (coach door handles for instance). When I saw your heading, I thought you'de found a large wasp in the living room, as I did this morning! Larry
  4. They didn't though. The Eastern Region used curly top 6's and 9's. The Western Region used a larger font than the LMR and so on. Then there were spaced out numerals such as in LYR and LMR 'Crab' locos. All adds to the spice of life, but the smokebox plate on the new Hornby 'Castle' is unlike anything. As most self respecting modellers fit etched plates, it doesnt matter, but even here beware of smokebox plates that have not come from hand drawn artwork.
  5. Up on the Cromford & High Peak you expected to see them, but down below on BR there was just so much more of interest. That's one reason why they're unloved. I hates em to pieces...
  6. My oh my, as I scrolled down these pictures the goods shed got better and better. Then came the final pictures with the roof finished, not just finshed but subtly carrying the green moss that is so familiar and yet hardly ever modelled. I'll have to do mine now. The work of a real pro. No wonder customer Dave is over the moon! What's on the cards next, the stationmasters house? Larry G.
  7. Tried it but all the information blocks are off-screen on my PC. Never mind, maybe something will be sorted one day to make access to the varous and very numerous Blogs and workbenches. It has all got very 'bitty' and we are only 4 months into RMweb4... I've tried to keep mine in one place but as only 10 entires are available in the Contents Block, it has meant joining some threads together. Cheers, Larry
  8. 'Delph Goods shed' in search produced no results. Niether could I find in in scratchbuilding (I didn't try too hard earlier today........in a hurry). Please can you provide a clue (link) as searching out Blogs is becoming a big problem now that RMweb is so big. Cheers, Larry
  9. It looks dangerous.....Get back man!
  10. Very neat. Your treatment of the roof is inspiring....it really looks like rotting canvass. Is this 4mm or 7mm? Larry
  11. Good clip there. If only DCC sound had as much base in 4mm. Not keen on a 2-cylinder-beat 'Jubilee' though....
  12. The J94's just looked so downright ugly, as indeed did the Austerity 2-8-0's and Bullied Q1 at the time. What would you prefer to see, an ancient pre-group 0-6-0 or a J94........No contest.
  13. robmcg, I like the look of your 'Castle'.
  14. My 'bible' on Castles has been 'Portaites of the 'Castles' by Holden & Leech (Moorland Publishing Company) since 1981. Every ''Castle is illustrated and most were photographed while carrying the early BR totem. No doubt more recent books will give fuller technical coverage.
  15. M&GN No.99, as illustrated in Kitchenside's album, carries simple LMS livery ie: double yellow at waist and two yellow lines in cantrail. This coach is a 12' 8" high vehicle with low roof and clerestory. They make for interesting coaches with perimeter seating (inward facing) and a very long table in the saloon portion. End of hijack! Larry.
  16. Speaking as a Western fan from a distance, I rate the 'Castle' amongst the top most beautiful designs and so will be having one just to look at while I'm on the PC. I used to see them in Chester while passing through and so set off for that city one day in order to travel behind a Castle as far as Wrexham. Dammit if the London Midland hadn't taken over and put ex LMS Jubilee's on WR trains!
  17. Only just come by this discussion on LNWR and MR going to the LNER (M&GN). The former Midland clerestories were were to MR D598 lot 752 50ft 3-compartment corridor thirds with an open saloon at one end. Some were merely re-lettered M&GN while others were given a brush over with LNER brown paint before being re lettered. Example numbers were 99 and 81012. They used to be available as etched zink sides from Trevor Charlton. Twelve of these semi-open saloons were transferred to the M&GN in March 1936. Later they were given LNER numbers and "livery" although still lettered M&GN. Some lasted until 1955 having by then acquired new numbers alloted by BR. Derek L. and I built & painted quite a few of these coaches (4mm) from Charlton parts in the 1980's, mostly in full panelled LMS livery with M&GN insignia, and a very few in LNE brown livery. Going off my old pencil written notes, Nos .99 and 95 were electrically lit, while No. 99 was destroyed by enemy action in 1945. Hope this is of use. Larry G.
  18. Most modellers worth their salt would be fitting engraved brass plates anyway, and these are generally correct. Larry
  19. My eyes are watering with being on here all day re-building some RMweb3 WB threads, so apologies for not noticing the text at the top of the page.....
  20. Nice one Moz. I fancy building one too. Who's kit is it?
  21. Sadly I cannot reach them owing to your contents listings being off screen stage right. Larry PS; Found a way around it by clickcing on Gravy Train Bog at top of screen...
  22. Hi Dave, I have taken the liberty of lightening your picture and posting it on my blog. hope this is okay. I cannot finish my roof as the LNWR carriage book is up at the farm and that is snowed in! Cheers, Larry
  23. Dibbers said : The model is not double lined in orange on side sheets and boiler bands so it is representative of 'City of Truro' as it is now. A darn good representation at that especially at the price. Double lining in 4mm scale.......I wonder if it has ever been done? Well yes, I did it many moons ago and I nearly lost the will to live...
  24. Phil knows his stuff when it comes to railways and painting. His rendition of the dark green with its "oily-rag" bronze look and the dark red frames is a close as it gets going off contemporary accounts. Also note how the orange lining is barely visible at this distance.
