  1. I picked up a copy of the Peco News Spring Report 2019 from Hatton's last Saturday and saw an interesting new design of turnout motor inside on page 3. Looks like an interesting concept. Cheers Paul

HG&DMRS 2019 Model Railway Exhibition Advanced Information Hazel Grove and District Model Railway Society are pleased to announce that their 2019 Model Railway Exhibition will be held at Hazel Grove High School on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th October 2019. Once again the exhibition is to be held in two halls as we present over 20 model railway layouts in all the popular scales and gauges, modelling demonstrations, full trade support, including the local model shop SMTF (located at Brookside Garden Centre), Booklaw, Squires Tools and the club sales stand. * The venue is wheelchair friendly and there is easy flat access for the disabled. * Refreshments will be available on both days. * Ample free parking on site or park at Hazel Grove Railway Station courtesy of Northern Rail and use the vintage bus to get to the exhibition venue on both days.   6. Lol there were only 3 staff on when I popped in to collect my order and a few in shop being served or waiting so I didn't ask them but I'm sure they might have opened cabinet up if I had asked. Paul
  7. Hatton's now have the livery samples on display in the shop cabinet and jolly nice they looked at first glance. I know from previous comments there are tweaks needed to the liveries etc. HTH Paul
  8. I have ordered two of these but have gone for 6313 and 6316 simply because they were reused once they finished in china clay traffic. The whole PVV to PRA timelime and wagon usage makes quite interesting researching. My pair will work on a rule 1 basis on my layout on a powdered lime trial... Cheers Paul
  9. Me too I contacted them in November about obtaining some plastic drive shafts for a 37 one of the original version models 37431 and they replied the same day. I left it until January to order 2 pairs on the Wednesday and they arrived in the post the next day. Cheers Paul

  13. Hi Ian, I discovered 6CW and 6DW to my suprise on the train home tonight. I was also told at Warley by Hatton's that no more models would be made. Ever full stop. Even Oxford Rail were being tight lipped referring me back to Hatton's... so that looked like that then. I had wondered if following the lapse of a possible agreement this meant that the rights to produce the models reverted to OR as dogbox mentioned in his post above. Or OR would announce them in their range last week. Nope. So I will place an order for some to bolster my fleet. You are right Ian 6CW was originally announced as being ICIM 19052 but was later changed to 19078. 6DW was to be BLI 19110 but changed to 19087 however the original letter outlines was for small letters hopefully now for large ones.   14. Hi, yes I thought it might be. I did get up and close with the L3 at Thornbury Leisure Centre where they hold the Bristol Model Railway show in May. I went for the model railways but got side tracked by the L3 outside the front door haha.Cheers Paul
  15. Something else to bear in mind with the L2 towers is that some have received revised tower bracing around the base depending on the tower height and number of extentions. My local L2 line runs from Macclesfield towards a tee junction at Bredbury just east of Stockport and back in 2010 the Macclesfield to Stalybridge circuit was uprated and was refurbished with new conductors and insulators. At the same time the towers received some additional strengthening steelwork. I don't know how widespread this update work was or even if it is a ongoing programme of upgrades for the L2s. The original steelwork lattice forms a W shape whereas the revised pattern looks like three As but without the horizontal _ bar. Paul

  17. If you look back through this thread you will see a photo of a booklet I made on the L2s a few years ago... it was Christmas offer on photo books so I decided to make my own on the L2 lol. Yes there are some differences I would need to sit down and check for you but you should be able to see them on the photos hopefully. Cheers Paul
  18. Yes sadly there is no definitive guide out there to UK pylon designs. I have contemplated doing one... can't be any worse than a book on UK roundabouts or garden shed surely?! If you go to my main photobucket page then into the individual albums you will see more L2 tower photos. L2 D is just a suspension tower with vertical hung insulator strings and in theory can deviate the line upto 2 degrees though I think in practice this was rarely if ever actually done. The D I have always taken to stand for Double circuit. L2 D30 is a deviation tower where pairs or twin insulator strings are attached to each side of the tower cross arms. So either side of the tower can be upto 15 degrees deviation. L2 D60 is a heavier duty tower used to turn from 30 upto 60 degrees and the outside of the deviation has squared end crossarms the inside of the turn has shorter angled cross arms. L2 D90 is even more heavy duty like the D60 but beefed up even more to allow a full deviation turn from 60 upto 90 degrees. These are used sparingly if possible. L2 DT is a terminal tower used to literally terminate the circuits into substation connecting directly from the tower to the busbars. There are several versions of these towers some standard some non-standard. L2 can be used just for a single circuit and so the conductors and insulators would only be strung on one side of the tower. There is one main ST terminal tower plus some variants of. Although the L2s were designed to be the backbone of the original Supergrid operating at 380kV most started at 275kV and later uprated to 400kV with improved twin conductors and insulators. Quite a few L2 routes exist outside of the main 275/400kV National Grid and most of these were originally operated by the local area boards like Norweb and SWEB etc. These passed into ownership of the current 132kV and below operators like Western Power Distribution. Whether this was forward planning by the local boards to uprate from 132 to 275kV I haven't established yet but it would seem to make sense. The Earth wire shielding angle for the L2 D tower is 45 degrees taken from the mid point of the tower peak then projecting down and outwards to the mid point of the base of each insulator string. I will see if I can get some more info when on the pc rather than on phone. Cheers Paul

  20. There is a stall in the Northwich outdoor market that sells odd bits of model railway items along with some diecast along with comics, music and other bits. There used to be another stall in the main indoor market next door and I believe this was S&J Models that is now based up the road in Castle. HTH Paul

Someone told me about this not so long ago asked me if I had heard of coal traffic to Peak Forest but it transpired it was for storage as you described.Regarding the bridge the Manchester west side wall went long ago as judged by the metal fencing now in place. The Derby side west wall overlooking the old station buildings now DB traincrew building was struck a few years ago by an artic truck trying to turn from Waterswallows road to cross the bridge. I'm suprised they don't put a width and weight restriction on the bridge really given the amount of trucks that pass over it. Cheers Paul

From the base horizontal line of lower x arm to same line of middle x is 7.489m, middle x arm to top x arm is 7.772m, top x arm to top of earth peak is 2.296m. HTH Paul
  23. The tower render is looking good let me m know if you want any morw dimensions. I once suggested making 3d printed towers on here and was pooh poohed shot down by the experts saying it couldn't be done so I look forward to seeing how it comes out and might just have to get one to put on display as L2s are my favourite tower design.   24. The top earth peak is quite small on the L2 D towers. I have loads of photos of them just not to hand right now. I have several albums on photobucket under user paulsrailphotos but it isn't letting me link any just at the moment as on phone. Cheers Paul
