  1. Yep agreed and I would happily do one... not sure how many it would sell mind you... i-Pylon?? Photos of all different types with the much loved tick box to say you have spotted this one? Cheers Paul
  2. I haven't been down to Great Rocks for a good while now so hopefully Mick's photos will confirm. I have often wondered if this line was owned by Tarmac up to the shunt signal post so maybe the lack of weedkiller confirms this. In the past this line was only used by loaded trains leaving Tunstead towards Great Rocks Jnc and empties were routed via the reception sidings where you can see the HIAs going in. At some point in the past ten or so years - maybe since the reception sidings were altered along with the new cement loading shed, loaded trains have been routed via the reception sidings on occasion as well. I can recall being caught out by a class 60 taking out the Northwich via the reception sidings whilsy I was stood on top of the hill above GR tunnel. Still made for a good photo though. HTH Paul
  3. From the two visits I have made myself in June and August the 37 and 56 only seem to be shunting the red DB MMA bogie box wagons from Dove Holes Cemex and GBRf 66s mostly the recent refurbd ex DB ones handle their own HYA/IIA bogie hoppers or rakes of ex DB HTAs that have been hired in from same quarry. Freightliner still seem to have a foothold in Cemex traffic whether this is on behalf of DB or GBRf is not clear but was using FL HHAs when I saw this in June. Still lots of rumours about what will replace the 37 and 56 but as much as I love 37s it really struggles backing up the rakes of loaded MMAs when swapping over loading positions. Maybe top and tail 37s might help? The 56s seemed a lot more sure footed but having knackered 105 so soon maybe not? Cheers Paul
  4. PS also there the same date 27th July 2006 was another BRA 964035 and later that day 08588 was seen using this BRA wagon as a barrier wagon to shunt MBAs. Cheers Paul
  5. Found a photo of a BRA at Peak dated c. July 2006 964004. Although coupled to a TTA this BRA may well have been used with MBAs. Cheers Paul
  6. The BRA or BYA was taken back to Arpley the other week on the tripper according to a friend I met at Peak last Thursday. I recorded BYA 966254 there on 16th Sept 2016 in use as a barrier wagon with HTAs and 60059. Same wagon noted 31st Oct 16 in the Up Sidings but then by 14th July 17 dumped at end of Down Siding just before main line cutting, same 30th Oct 17 and 22nd March 18 however as I recall from March the data panel was missing from the road viewing side. The wagon had been shunted back over to the Up Sidings again unidentified due to missing panel on 7th June. Cheers Paul
  7. Ok cheers I just wondered now the wagons are routed via Arpley for maintenance they might have taken it away unless its wheelsets and bearing preclude that. Cheers Paul
  8. 56105 is being used at Peak Forest by Victa Railfreight to shunt DB MMA box wagons for loading in the quarry there. 56113 was the first one to be used but was replaced by 105 a few weeks ago. 37716 is also helping out as well. Though as much as I like 37s from what I saw yesterday the 56 was shunting loaded wagons back up the gradient much better. I think Victa are hiring them from Colas but Victa seem to be buying them from what I heard yesterday on the bridge at Peak. Cheers Paul
  9. That is good to hear Kev I wasn't just sure if they were still up as not been up that way for a while now. The main reason I went to Stalybridge was to look at the alterations they were making to the L6 line coming in from Woodhead and the L2 line coming in from Macclesfield/Bredbury and the new L2 towers they put in linking the 275 and 400kV substations there.Cheers Paul
  10. You don't tend to get many single circuit pre-grid tower designs. The only other local ones I can think of run from near Hale to Mobberley with gaps around the M56 area where the line has been altered to run on poles instead.Cheers Paul
  11. Cheers Jamesb, it really is overgrown down the spur into the works. No hoppers today Thursday typical and been to Peak Forest as well. 60039 was stabled on the Up sidings keeping out of the GBRf/VR manoeuvres lol. Any reason why they haven't yet picked up the spare JEA yet and taken it to Arpley? Cheers Paul
  12. A couple of photos showing examples of what I consider to be pre-grid designs mainly now in use on 11 - 66kV lines One of showing a tower not far from where I live in Hazel Grove - this used to be part of a line running from Stockport to Macclesfield originally double-circuit I believe. Now used for local 11kV distribution. The ID plate on the tower still read Norweb back then and stated it was Tower 6 Line 9 These next two are near Stalybridge up on the hillside above the Stalybridge to Huddersfield line if they haven't gone. Two different types of D2 towers A pair of towers used to take a pole line up and over the Manchester to Chester railway line not far from where the WCML passes underneath at Hartford Junction. A similar pair can be found south of Winsford crossing over the WCML there as well. Not 100% sure if they are pre-grid or not Another design this time on the outskirts of Weston-super-Mare you can see them as you enter Weston by train from the Bristol direction although the actual line runs south towards Taunton and is or was going to be dismantled soon or at least the part around Weston is. I will see in a few weeks if this has been done yet or not when I am staying in Weston. And lastly what looks like a scaled and slimmed down PL1b single-circuit design that runs from Waterswallows substation near Buxton towards the town itself probably the remains of an original much longer line that used to run all the way from Stalybridge now truncated at New Mills. Just a few of my photos lol Cheers Paul
  13. Blaw Knox were responsible for the design of at least 3 of the 132kV P.L. design of towers - the Central Electricity P.L.4; South Western Electricity P.L.16 and the Scottish P.L.16s along with several special design towers. Cheers Paul

  16. I saw this pass through Stockport later and the 57 was still leading coupled to the Mk5s as shown in the photos above so a complete reversal using Gresty Bridge then into Basford Hall I think then out to Manchester using independent lines? Paul
  17. Following on from my post showing 60062 today Friday 27th saw 60059 doing the honours on the hoppers running about half an hour late on booked timings but this time in brighter weather. Seen here drawing forward from Northwich TC ready to clear the point into the works and set back the rake of loaded JEAs

    Dave Goodwin

I got to know Dave via the HMRS when he was involved with the North West/Wirral area group and he invited me to show my I.C.I. Hopper slide show at one of their meetings in Birkenhead. A local connection being the Summers/BSC iron-ore hoppers from Bidston Dock to Shotton of course. As I had no way of getting back home easily via Liverpool after giving the show he kindly offered to drop me off at Chester in enough time to get the last train home to Stockport. A pleasant model railway conversation later he dropped me off and wouldn't take anything for his fuel. Some time later I followed up with another slide show using images from my uncles collection dating from the late 1970s and early 1980s. Let's just say they enjoyed the North Wales Coast 40s a lot! RIP Dave Paul
  19. 60s have recently restarted hauling the Tunstead to Lostock limestone flow after a period of operation by Freightliner 66/6s and their HIA hoppers. In the first week of DB operation I watched 60062 arrive at Northwich and shunt the train of loaded JEA hoppers back into Tata Chemicals Lostock works on 13th July just after 6pm. The diagram seems to be Warrington Arpley to Tunstead empty in morning then loaded afternoon Tunstead to Lostock followed by an late evening return to Arpley with the empty JEAs. Still booked for Peak Forest drivers but by routing the wagons via Arpley means they can be maintained there as required. Good to see them back on 'the hoppers' Cheers Paul
  20. Still on-going according to latest reports... said person or persons seem to be on east side of viaduct on or near Up Slow with BT and NR on tracks as well. My 07.23 from Northwich this morning to Stockport was held there for just over an hour as Network Rail wouldn't allow train to proceed forward to Altrincham despite the preceding train having terminated already at Altrincham and formed a train back to Chester... so we ended up waiting at Northwich for this unit to pass us lord knows why as nothing in sections to Altrincham. And then once we got to Altrincham expecting the train to terminate we then were allowed to continue to Stockport with booked Navi Rd stop. On arrival at Stockport train then allowed to continue to Piccadilly but many southbound services were cancelled or delayed. All this because of... I would love to know how many hours delay and total cost this amounts to. I am all for people getting the right help but this is really overstepping the mark somewhere. And yes I do know the flip-side of a train hitting a person and a good friend has sadly had this happen to him twice whilst driving for Northern both daytime and night-time. What is the answer? I don't know but they did make an effort at Stockport some years ago by installing fencing and the rubber spike mats at each platform end. Not sure which end of the viaduct access was gained from in this mornings trespass but it needs checking and beefing up to be a stronger deterent to all. Paul
  21. Sadly no... but I have often wondered about doing. I did however make my own booklet via an Aldi photo book offer a few years ago one Christmas. And this is what it turned out like....
  22. Well the good news is I found my Hornby pylon kit conversions. Bad news is the have been damaged... mainly due to the extra plastic I used being broken or going brittle. Serves me right for not buying stronger brass section for the important structural parts and infilling with plastic. Oh well. The background to these was to simply build a few based on ones I had seen up close. So a D60 (D=Double circuit i.e. three crossarms each side top middle bottom each carrying one three phase circuit on each side of the tower. 60= max. angle of deviation in degrees) was modelled on one up on the hillside above the former Gowhole Sidings near New Mills. Whilst a DT terminal tower was based on the one at the substation next to the Hope Valley line just east of New Mills South Jnc. The 5 PL1 towers are used to turn in the single circuit 33kV line to Gowhole substation running down the hillside. My take on the D60 tower My DT modelled on Gowhole one An as built And finally an incomplete D30 which you can see the extra and modified parts in white styrene I have parts from secondhand Hornby kits to bash into other PL1 towers but never got round to starting them. Cheers Paul
  23. Absolutely agree with you Phil a good history book is well overdue on what might be considered one of the other backbones of Britain. There was a reasonable program on BBC4 some years ago called The Secret Life of the National Grid narrated by Philip Glennister. Somewhere I have a copy recorded onto DVD. There was a chap featured in the program who seemed to be very knowledgeable and I suspect had a vast archive of information. Cheers Paul
  24. Painter Brothers (Bros.) indeed supplied many fabricated PL tower designs and Milliken Bros., Pirelli, Blaw Knox and Watshams were all designers of double circuit D and single circuit S tower designs in the PL series and Blaw Knox designed some of the L series for 275kV and later 400kV L6 towers along with Balfour Beatty and one other plus the C.E.G.B.s own L6 design of L6. Cheers Paul
  25. Yes I guess that would be possible to fed the mines so they were fed from a nearby power station in that area maybe Middlesbrough area? Cheers Paul
